The thing I never get in these "you're the Dark Lord's chosen vessel" is why doesn't the person realize that means the Dark Lord's minions can't actually kill them? They always scare the person into thinking they're in danger so they do the very reckless things that fulfill the prophecy or what not. But they can't actually kill them. Just call their bluff.

I feel when it comes to cults that try to plan out events based on your reactions to things, you would have to be more careful. If you call their bluff, they might just say "okay" and kill you anyway. just a thought though

In last shift, it made sense that Jessica had to stay in the old station overnight but it doesn’t make any sense to have an officer work nights inside an abandoned police station. Cops who work that shift are either in the streets or working at an actual working station. I guess this was the best they could do with their premise Sorry, I used to be a cop

I agree it might have made more sense if the place had been getting broken into, and vandalized more an more as they moved over to the new station. Even the idea of maybe since so many were coming into the city the cells at the new station were overloaded, and someone above thought "why not use the cells at the old station." Yet they began to realize that they needed so many boots on the streets they could only put a single officer on duty at the old station both to keep an eye on those in the cells as well as keep anyone from breaking in. Even this is a thin premise, but abit more plausible to me atleast than the premise given.

Malum certainly was better written with better production but I wasn't a fan of expanding the Cult to being all over town, with the symbols on telephone poles and walls and stuff and I certainly didn't like the family connection. Last Shift worked best cause it was isolated and she was just a victim of the entity, no Hereditary style link...Last Shift also had more scares, the girls in the mirror, officer Price with the hole in his head, the lockers being open...Also I liked the ending of the original, her killing the hazmat team was better than the suicide.

the scares on last shift are almost all jumpscares that not even justify themselves. In Malum there are a lot of subtle aparition, kind of in Hill house, where you can find things in the backround, and have also a lot less jumpscare, better made tension and more contextual horror. idk i think it is made in a very smart way. Eitherway, i end up the movie with a feeling of.. lack. I think there were a lot of lose ends that should have been adress and in the first one I end up with a similar feeling but much more subtle.

If you look at the pigs collar it says Betty, the name of the girl in the yellow dress. I think her spirit is in the pig, and that's why it called out to her father. I loved this remake but found the Mom being in a cult plot point the weirdest and hardest to follow.
@asteridshydrangea-jt2hf
@asteridshydrangea-jt2hf 4 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s a shame because if the mom in the cult was a stronger plot point it might have made a potent real life counterpoint (cults preying on and psychologically breaking down desperate people) to the supernatural methods of psychologically breaking down her daughter. The human evil mirroring the supernatural evil, potentially making it feel a little bit more skin-crawlingly grounded

There seems to be an uncanny valley in horror. Subtlety goes a long way in creating unease. The original Pinhead had an aura of horror, and there was not much gore, just hints of horrific body modification and promises of horror to come. You come at me with a demon covered in gore with his face turned into a starfish that flies around, and you've entered the valley where it loses all horror.

I really admired the clear love and effort behind this, but I still liked the original better. It’s one of my go-to horror movies. The actress who played Jess just resonated with me more in the original, and even with a bigger budget, Malum couldn’t stand up to TLS’s scares IMO. The scene where the dead girl crawls out from under the desk and up into Jess’ face in the original still freaks me out just thinking about it. I do think the ending was a bit of a mess in the original, but I’m not sure Malum did much to fix it. I always wanted Jessica to survive the night (and not kill all those people), and then we see her grocery shopping or something a few weeks later, and hear a woman next to her humming the girls’ song. That would have been my pitch for an ending. Maybe if they make it a third time!

Last Shift deserved a sequel, it didn't look low budget at all - not so much as that a remake would be better. Also, The Void was an epic film done on a relatively roped in budget that was really good - would they rather remake that take by take or whatever that add to the lore? Surely they'd have more horror fans in seats by doing the latter?

The higher budget and improved effects are very noticeable in Malum but I definitely prefer Last Shift. It did a lot with the budget it had, delivered some fantastic suspense and payoffs, and the story had a subtle mystery to it like I really liked. After it ends, you're left to ponder how much of it was supernatural and how much of it was Jess experiencing grief-induced hallucinations. I'm glad that Malum is closer to the vision the creator always wanted but Last Shift was definitely not a lacklustre film by any means. A lot of its charm and uniqueness stemmed from the limitations they were working with. Think of it like this: the first Silent Hill game had a lot of fog as a means to obscure the abysmally small render distance of the PS1; monsters and buildings would pop into existence in a silly way without the fog obscuring it. That fog is now considered an iconic part of the franchise and it wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for that console limitation.

I thought it was weird that this thumbnail looked exactly like the last shift, honestly that was one of my favorite low budget horror movies because of the seclusion to the location, the psychological aspect mixed with the paranormal, and the crazy ass ending, the twists, like maybe it’s rose tinted nostalgia glasses because it was almost a decade ago but from what I remember I loved it. That being said, the same directors and production studio going back to work on their original idea and reimagine it I’ll always be on board for. Bringing the practical effects to 11 and diving deeper into the story of the cult as well as the officers backstory felt really good because that’s what I wanted more of from the original. The fact that this is a reimagining though takes the originality out of it and even some of the authenticity of the scares that a few seem recycled from the original, even the ending was like well yeah of course it was going in this direction given the setup of the mother and premise of the movie. All that being said though I loved the concept and sentiment behind it and while it was entertaining, maybe even more than the first, it didn’t hit scare wise like the first did. Dude, I just watched Last Shift for the first time three weeks ago. I know it was three weeks, because right afterwards I proceeded to watch and then comment on that FoundFlix ending explained video!

I'm not sure we watched the same movie. The officer told Jessica to "Turn around". She turns and starts walking away, then he shouts at her the he didn't ask her to walk but to 'turn around' only.

Ah yes, because on a cops first ever shift they leave them all alone with no one to show them the ropes 🤔 Another great video as always. Would love to see a video on the English film Possum.

most crucial rules on a farm: never alone in the pig pen, never let a child near a pig pen. the smell of blood will turn those things in landshark but worse. 9 minutes and the average man will be nothing but bones

I honestly prefer the first version, it was more subtle and had way more tension in it than this one. Plus I liked the cast more. They did a terrific job.

The overall presentation is better, that comes down to the bigger budget and knowledge that Last Shift was a hit with horror fans and critics, but the ending was way more haunting in the original. Both are actually really good as introductions to horror though, this wasn’t a bad movie, it’s actually really good, I just prefer the gritty low budget original a tad bit more because of the ending only.

I like the ambiguity of the ending more in the original but things actually happen in this one and it feels less tedious and I like the new mystery of the cult and the main character’s involvement. Also like that they used (I think) their own original demon.

I think they should’ve really expanded on the universe. Maybe instead of redoing it, add to the aftermath of the incident. Leading to the big reveal of the low one. I feel like that would bring more suspense of the unknown and develop the story even greater.
