Here is a sequence of brown bear ("grizzly") clips as shot handheld from across the Salmon River. I had heard these bruins bellowing, groaning, and roaring upon stepping outside, and sadly, I was too late in grabbing the camera to record any of that amazing audio. I suspect the younglings were roughhousing and the mama bear telling them to knock it off. Am I anthropomorphizing? Nah.
It was wonderful, however, to see the bears doing their thing without catching wind of me or seeing me. Were there not a fast-flowing river between us, I would have been too close for comfort (about 80'). I felt safe due to the river, and I was hidden by branches of spruce and alder, which also lent their "character" to the shots. It is rare, in my experience, to be this close and not have bears aware of me.
The camera only recorded the sound of the river, and my breathing, so rather than try to fake diegetic sound, I just covered up its lack with one of my songs.
