I am a white foreigner from the US living in China. A lady was trying to give me a pamphlet of some English school and she kept saying in Mandarin " Do you want to improve your English?" I looked at her and said in English "Ummm..no thank you?" She said to me in Mandarin " Wow... your English is good!"

Actually, it is not politically correct to say anyone is not Chinese if they are white... It is not about racism, it is about the Unity of Nationality... Russian has been a nationality since our country was establish ... He didn't know whats Chinese PC, obviously.

Actually not all people that haven't East Asian features speak English. So... Did she know you're from England? No. Not all white people know to speak English. When I was in China I pretend that I don't know English at all. Why because I'm from Spain, and if I'm in China I speak Chinese. Not English.

If you see the number... just add a "forward this number to..." and send them to their own support hotline. Works great for me if cable, phone or power companys are calling me.

In Hong Kong, I just answered the phone in English if I didn't know the number... worked every time.. lol. For my friends... speak Cantonese / Mandarin / English.. lol.

Christian DaF- This type of problem is quite common with similar sounding words as well as with homophones with different spelling among native speakers of a language. Acquiring the language habitually, these people didn't notice the differing pronunciation, and failed to learn the distinct uses of the two words in their education.
