Actually, given that he said "blue" was his favourite colour, I think it might be a very 'in-joke' about the Chinese app Blue'd. Blue'd is like the biggest gay dating/hookup app in China (and the world, actually). This also weirdly fits in with the "we click like real men" comment.

Well, the thing is, even if you speak perfect English with a Downtown Abbey accent and you graduated from Cambridge or Oxford and you're a great teacher with years of experience, the Chinese employers don't give a damn if you're not from the US/Canada/UK. They'd rather give the job to a high school grad from Wyoming who can't differentiate your you're and your rather than hire a professional english teacher from Russia. That's why people trying to get a job in China often pose as native English speakers to get hired.

As a native English speaker who has taught English, I think that people who had learned English as a second or third language are a lot better at teaching English off the bat than native English speakers. A lot of natives of trouble explain some grammar points that seem very natural to native English speakers, like the explaining the difference between saying "I yelled at you" and "I yelled to you", or why you can say "I gave the apple to you" but you can't say "I gave the apple at you." Of course with experience people can do it, but I found that pervious English learners are a lot better at explaining those things naturally.

You are absolutely right. I learned English in 2 NY schools and had many teachers who were native speaker English teachers and foreign teachers from different countries. I can tell you that the foreign teachers could better explain some nuances of English language versus an other language because they had encountered with similar problems at the time when they learned English. While native speaker English teacher in most cases don't understand this nuances. Yes, they know the language but they don't understand the problem from the point of view of a foreign student.

Whenever I see English native speakers complaining about English teachers from CEE countries in China, I become sympathetic with these Russians/Ukrainians/Serbians living in China... I cannot stand this cultural arrogance that some Americans/Canadians/Australians/etc have in China. Once I told to an American (an English teacher in Shenzhen) that I have an italian heritage, and his comment was: "Italian? Is your father some mafia guy?" (!?). Personally I feel a lot of these native speakers are overrated, but ofc I cannot generalize, there're always exceptions. If it's true lot of Eastern Europeans are not that fluent with English, it's also true that some Native English speakers are not qualified for teaching. btw How about your Chinese guys, you've been living in China for at least 2-3 years and still many of you cannot even say nihao, it seems doublefaced talking about someone's English skills while you cannot even talk the language of the country where you've been living for years.. PS: I'm not working in teaching business.

They are just mad that the non-natives are getting in on their turf. China should just look at whether a teacher is qualified or unqualified and not at whether or not the teacher is a native or non-native speaker.

I agree, I feel they are mostly concerned about market competition (which means lower price for their lessons) than the actual quality of English that most of their customers will get. I bet that a talented and qualified English teacher from US/Canada/Australia/NZ can always get at least 300RMB per hour because there're customers which prefer quality over price.
@oOcitizenOo
@oOcitizenOo 6 жыл бұрын
Livio Defranza you were right when you said native speakers are overrated. They really are. Undoubtedly, there are great teachers, but in my opinion, in russia you can meet much more qualified teachers of English regarding their knowledge even though they have an accent. That is due to an extremely difficult education plan which requires you to know lots of linguistic topics coupled with methodology of teaching. Idk if it could be applied to other countries but still. I didn't get the point of this video though. I mean lots of Russians/Ukranians/Serbians give classes in China even though they don't have a diploma but it is the employer who decides whether this person fits his working standarts or not. So there the quality of classes is being assessed and sometimes, like in this video, it is of extremely bad quality. Was it originally intended to show that this happens everytime in China and poor natives are not given jobs?

"History" wasn't the best example to showcase a thick accent, I can't remember any Russian who'd pronounce the H the way it was in the video. Sure, the H sounds differently in Rus and Eng, but in a different way; In fact, I can hardly imagine any Russian pronouncing it like that. A much better example would've been a "th" sound as there is no equivalent of it in Russian and so beginners and/or those who can't care less about their pronunciation just substitute it with z (There becomes z'ere) and s (Think becomes Sink). Funny sketch otherwise.

It should have been H pronounced as G instead... As in Harry - Gary, Hawaii - Gawaii etc so History > Gistory. The subtitles got it right but the performance was a bit off.

I barely got hired to teach English in China because I am Chinese-American. My friends that graduated from the best universities in the US were all rejected for not being white. Meanwhile, I got hired with this autistic Irish kid; he didn’t bother to disclose it and the staff didn’t bother to check. His Northern Irish accent was so harsh that it was difficult for anyone (especially the poor students) to understand him. He also had badly impaired communication and motor skills that the staff asked a teaching assistant to babysit him after class hours. It was a ridiculous teaching semester

万憬颐 my point exactly. Why are you hiring white people (just bc they’re white) with especially low education standards to teach children? What makes you think that non white native English speakers aren’t suited to teach the language? What a joke...

Integralrechnung I’m assuming from your comment you don’t realize that autism is a spectrum. I know and have worked with people who have high functioning autism. A lot of them are amazing at what they’re interested in, and if they are limited in social skills they have a brilliant mind. In all, teaching is a social career. Think about the children who the education system in my school are failing. His impaired communication and motor skills made it impossible for the children to learn and for him to teach. In any case, if you cannot do your job, it isn’t right for you. I challenge you to argue the idea that someone who can’t tie their shoes and forgets their pants be able to control a class and teach children a new language well! This is exactly why I described his degree of autism. This isn’t to say that peoples with disabilities shouldn’t have jobs- if that’s what you are inferring. That’s discrimination. It comes down to the quality of work, which you seem to be ignoring here. Mind you, he also had no interest in teaching- but the Chinese administrator hired anyway. The question should’ve been “regardless of your autism, are you qualified to be a teacher?”
@M4tchStickGirl
@M4tchStickGirl 6 жыл бұрын
Integralrechnung Yes, I was patronizing- but it seems like you missed the point. The Chinese administrators were under qualified and simply hired him for his name and his whiteness. This backfired on them. I suspect there is a case of nepotism, since the last names were the same- and I know China has corruption issues. If I was patronizing anyone, it would be the Chinese education system that I encountered there. (And perhaps it may have been the boy’s white privilege that allowed him to get the teaching position)
