I've suffered from xenophobia since I was a child, my parents sent me to numerous counselors to no avail. Still to this day I can't talk to some people and people think I'm racist or bigoted but I am suffering from a condition. Since when do we start hating people with phobias? I've started a group recently for anyone who is transphobic, homophobic, xenophobic, etc. The goal is to spread awareness of people's phobias and stop the hate from the so called woke people who never go after someone for being arachniphobic.

Moldovan descendant born in germany here: The biggest part of xenophobia is towards arabs and slavs. The germans always get veeeery self conscious with afro american looking people. African looking? Racism shows again hard. (Obviously only noticed it as i am slav) But to share a little story myself: my family came to germany 1946 over austria fleeing from the soviets. My grandmother spoke 6 languages fluently and both got denied her teacher's degree she made under KuK regulations because she is not "from here" and joining the "bund der vertriebenen" (some organisation working for the interests of displaced) denied entry on the basis she was not german enough and a economic refugee (the soviets would have killed my family for being kulaks. At least the nazis could be bribed enough to spare us and our workers) Fast forward to me in a job interview i got asked about my unusual last name and mention the romanic background and 3 min later the interview was over. They didn't even write me to tell me i didn't get the job. In my experience the most aggressive xenophobia you'll have in major cities and outside bavaria. Bavarians are... Well special. They live my the saying "ignorance is a bliss" and have a pretty akward way of saying stuff. My favorite example for their xenophobia "lieber ein neger in lederhosen als einen preußen am stammtisch" (roughly translated: we prefer a negro in lederhosen/folk dress rather than a prussian sitting at the locals table) It sounds very rude but their intention is only to highlight how hated the prussians are. They consider it a lot more realistic to integrate an african into their culture than accepting a prussian. In general bavarians do not even like themselves that much (lower bavaria vs higher bavaria. Old bavaria vs frankonia and svabia. Bavaria vs munich. Bavaria vs austrians. It has to be noted Bavarians and austrians will stop their feud any time vs saxons/prussians. Lot of text but what is the conclusion? Don't bother with germans. If you do not feel okay here leave. It won't get better. I for sure will do asap after completing my master's degree. I have a German boyfriend but we are in a long distance relationship, whenever I visit German I wear traditional African clothes and jewelleries, it's very colorful. At first when I wore it I was expecting to be killed or received great hatred. To my surprise I had Germans stopping me and compliment me, children would run to me and tell me I look pretty, very few gave me the hate look. Most were loving it, foreign people and Germans were asking me for photos. But when I'm wearing jeans and shirt nobody cares 🤣

She is a child, though. What she did was most likely a product of what her parents or the adults raising her were teaching her.

Go to the Ruhrgebiet. Lot's of Germans have Polish family names, because of Polish ancestry. They are just normal Germans that don't get discriminated. There are other ethnicities that don't like the Germans and keep separate from them in their closed community. This is where you have a lot of potential for cultural conflict.

Arabs and Poles didn't come to Germany as "Gastarbeiter" (foreign workers). Arabs came as "refugees" because of the instability and lack of perspective in their own countries, while Poles were kept behind the Iron Curtain during the "Gastarbeiter"-Period. And Turks (mis-)used the right to let their family follow them (Familiennachzug) to increase their numbers in Germany to several million people and literally settle in another people's country, as Turks, never intending to become German (to assimilate), exept on paper - for getting the legal status of a German citizen.

That's interesting to read. I have a friend from Northern Italy(who speaks perfect German but you can hear undertones of his Italian accent) who was once denied access into a club we were with a group of our other German friends about 15 of us. I was so shocked and dumbfounded because I wondered I am visibly black and that Security guard let me in, but someone from their neighbouring country was shunned basically with "we don't need shitty Italians here" but it was said in German. My partner was so shocked tried to intervene and he was told "do you wanna stay inside with your girlfriend or follow the shitty Italian" and that's how me my partner and one other friend decided to say bye to our other friends inside and went home.

I don't see racism in your examples. It is not racist to be against people who have ruined their own country and are now trying to improve their situation by benefiting from what your ancestors created for the benefit of their own descendants. The owners are trying to defend their property against large-scale(!) immigration of people who own nothing, which is a perfectly normal reaction.

It should better be called nationalism or chauvinism. If locals discriminate against foreigners, that's perfectly fine because their land is owned by their people and a foreigner cannot claim the same right to use it for his own good as a local. This may not be very friendly to foreigners, but no people have an obligation to be friendly to foreigners, especially when those foreigners came uninvited. However, they have the right to defend their country against foreigners who want to take advantage of it. This is not a case of racism either but of ownership.

Wow I'm astonished cause I just realized that I have suffered this kind of discrimination!!! I was born in Venezuela Spanish speaker country but raised in Ireland and Portugal !! dad Irish , mum Portuguese !! It seems like xenophobia is quite misunderstood. It's meeting something you've never meet and then instantly fearing it. The fear of the unknown. To me it's creatures like bugs and animals, new foods, trying new activities, anxiety in new social situations and so on. Imagine suddenly seing a dragon for the first time and not knowing they exist till that very moment. Then instantly thinking something bad is going to happen because the dragon is dangerous. Of course you can be both xenophobic and racist, but being xenophobic doesn't make you racist. The phobia has nothing to do with hate, only fear. It's a real phobia, just like being scared of clowns or spiders. But usually with xenophobia you're afraid of everything, untill you understand it's not dangerous.

I absolutely agree. The racism I’ve experienced/witnessed here is nothing compared to what many others experience on a daily basis but I still think my stories were worth sharing. One of my friends here is from Nigeria and it upsets me hearing about some of her racist encounters here in Germany. In saying that my husband’s best friend is African American/German (born in Germany) and has told us that he’s never experienced racism here.

You should try to understand why some foreigners are considered as "good" and others as "bad". There may be reasons not based on race but based on experience.

Well, you do not understand, but you judge them. They may have reasons to make a difference between people coming from England/NZ/USA or from Turkey, Arab countries or even Poland.

Some maybe. Our former syrian neighbors kids spoke 4 or 5 languages fluently though. They even gave the kurdish kids down the street new curse words every week ;)

THW werst you can do is to give not your mother tongue to your children but talk to them in a language you are not easy with. A child who learn one language really well is normally able to learn other languages much more easily than those who never learned at least one language perfectly. I am a teacher and we have lots of kids where the parents immigrated, speak some German and talk in German to their kids. Those do not have a any language to really express themselves in a detailed way. They didn't get the chance to make comfortable with a complex grammar system, so to adopt another one later. I always encourage parents to use whatever language they know best But there are already lots of parents who aren't firm in any language already!

The last thing may be a problem nowadays. I don't know if this still happens. The story I remember happened aroune 2003. A classmate had been beaten hard by some Turkish guys (he didn't do anything than smiling at their sister). He contacted the police and since it had happened on his way home from school the school also was involved into the talk with the police. It ended up with telling him that he better not press charges because onr might think that he (or the school) is xenophobic. When you've experienced something like that you might hesitate to contact the police if someone who looks or sounds like a foreigner would do something criminal against you.

@@UntotesSchaf Sad, but true! I came to experience a situation up here, only months ago. Dealing and consuming drugs right next to a Berufsschule, here. With no fear, no respect. The "kings" of the place. The police doesn't do anything. Makes me so sad. That is the seed to make people vote for the right wing politicians.

A lot of German people are able to speak english nearly fluently because we learn it in school (Nowadays from class one, but when I went to school (from 1986 to 1996) from 5th grade on). So your friend mustn't be that afraid. Even in Kindergarten he might be able to talk English. People will at least understand a lot of his questions and will answer either in English or in another way he's able to understand.

@@marrykurie48 but he will not understand, what other kids and adults say to his son, I think this can cause a strong feeling of being excluded and he will not always want to ask his son to translate everything, or it's just not possible if many people say something... So that's why I ask how it was for Antoinette at the beginning. (And if it would be me, I would think I wouldn't be happy if for example my 4 years old would have some friends at home and they all talk a language I don't understand and I couldn't say nice and funny things to the kids, that wouldn't be nice for me...)

Actually Afghan women are more indepedent (or used to be) than German women, whose own government only requires from them to be good housewives and to clean well... and serve the husband. Not quite the way of thinking of the tru Afghan society (not taliban, that's another story)

Great travelling the world and exposing yourself to those who don't look like you is the antidote to the unnecessary hate. You quickly learn there exists good and bad people everywhere.

You don't have to expect mass immigration from developed countries like the UK, NZ, AUS or the USA. Your opinion towards people from these countries may therefore be more welcoming than towards people from vast undeveloped areas who would improve their lack of perspective by moving to your country.

It's definitely not caused by the "unknown" , because Muslim and Eastern European people are far more "known" in Germany than English speaking people , so whatever the real cause is , it's not the "unknown" , you eat more Döner Kebab than Turkish people themselves and you're framing as if it's an Indiana Jones adventure into the unknown to get to know them . Germany is a country that was gassing children and babies for the crime of being born Jewish or Eastern European , and that's only 80 years ago , essentially yesterday not even the life time of a single person , and that explains it far better .
