I've been blessed to play the role of Mame twice and every time I hear this song, those wonderful memories come flooding back. I can't stop listening to this version; it's spectacular!

One the absolute greatest musical numbers. And, no matter what the moaners say, I love the 1974 movie version. Lucille Ball, Robert Preston and Bea Arthur are all excellent.

Wow! Coming from Donal Pippin, this is high praise! It's too bad that the soloist does not get the lyrics exactly right.

Today I was feeling down-and-out and did what I always do to cheer myself up... listen to music. I decided to indulge myself and listen to a song that brings back memories of good times. You see, I played the title role of Mame in a college production 45 years ago this spring. Because I played Mame, I never sang this particular song. But the whole experience of playing this iconic character was exhilarating and at the same time exhausting. She's in just about every scene and had 14 costume changes! But I was 21 years old and had the stamina and talent to make a good showing. Sometimes we have to go back and remember when we've risen to the occasion with no reservations and full-on gusto. Today I needed to remind myself that I still had the spirit of that young woman in me. This isn't narcissism... It's reaffirmation. By the time the song ended my heart was swelling, my spirit was enlivened and I felt the sting in my eyes just before tears. I felt so grateful that I had the opportunity and blessing to play Mame Dennis. All through my life, I've always tried to live by Mame's credo which is: "LIVE! Life is a banquet! And most people are starving to death! Yes Miss Dennis! I've lived! "

I could listen to this repeatedly. MAME was our Senior Class Play in 1983. We hired a professional choreographer from NYC. Also hired, was a string ensemble to perform along side our outstanding band. Sold out all four shows. At our 35th reunion, a VHS copy of our production was viewed. I can tell you how joyful we were. Ecstatic!! One of my greatest memories from high school, being in the cast.

It's an annual event. The John Wilson each year blows all the other orchestras off the stage. There isn't anything they can't play. They make all the other stuffy "Established" orchestras look like they are sleepwalking through it. Check out Tap Your Troubles Away at the Proms with Anna Jane Casey. Then try the Tom & Jerry suite. Enough said!

Actually I think that is unfair, The Promenade Concerts are a celebration of classical music, popular music is a fairly new introduction into the programme. Some would say it is 'dumbing down'! That said, this is my favourite sound from a favourite film.

I keep this close because I once as a kid had the equivalent of an Auntie Mame. I too wish it were louder and bolder and brassier. And about the south rising again? Come on, Auntie Mame is the one who said "Life's a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death." Pull up to the table.
