I saw the production starring Ginger Rogers, when it ran at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1969. I was 16 years old at the time. After the show had finished I waited with around 20 others by the stage door for Ginger Rogers to come out. When she did she came straight up to me and asked where I was from. She asked if I has enjoyed the show, and I replied, very much. She then said "You know, you are very lucky. When I was your age I never saw anything like this. She then smiled, waved, and got in the car that was waiting for her. I still have the souvenir programme she signed for me on the night.

There are two things I love about this (aside from Ginger Rogers). First of course, there is Julia McKenzie who ends up center stage at the end of the number sining the highest high note she is able to. But secondly, notice the really sad dancer standing directly next to Ginger during a lot of this number. His kicks are about half as high as everyone else and he rarely cracks a smile or moves his lips when he's supposed to be singing along with the rest of the chorus. Don't know who that guy is, but he's a whole production by himself!
@tristanbray21843 жыл бұрын
C'mon. He's not that sad.

I agree with your assessment. Ginger Rogers is stunning in this scene. Her smallest movements are lovely and graceful. The words of the song seem appropriate and true, because she does come across as delightful. The male lead seems polished and confident. The rest of the cast...watching them led me to check to see that this was an actual Broadway production. The choral singers and ensemble dancers of my high school production looked and sounded better than this. I have always thought that it would be extremely difficult, to ever be chosen for a choral or dance ensemble part in a Broadway production. I have thought that only top level dancers, supporting actors, and singers would ever be chosen. This video has shattered that illusion. They did not have one performer on that stage who could manage a decent high note. The dancer of your description...he may just be the worst of an amateur ensemble. They were all...awful.
@JM-lw3nx2 жыл бұрын
Believe me, that was intentional. First of all it appears he was making room for Ginger's kicks, and not getting in the way or drawing attention away from her. The same is true for his lack of huge expression. You don't upstage a star like Ginger Rogers.
@josephcollins60332 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that ungodly sound on top that is "sung" straight tone!! OMG! Well, it is exciting to have the tone at least, at the end of this. Who is Julia M? Oh, I saw the guy you mentioned!! OMG!!! @josephcollins60332 жыл бұрын
@@JM-lw3nx I do get what you say, but having done that as what they used to call a singer/dancer, with many stars, I can tell you that what he is doing actually upstages her. I would never have kicked as high as I could if standing next to her. But, the face!

Ms. Lansbury was the same age (or perhaps 57) when I saw her in the revival in 1983. Gosh, what lovely memories! Some critics sniffed but I don't think that's too old for the part if you're in good shape and Dame Angela was certainly more than capable. Great to find this! I had been hoping for a London cast recording with Ms. Rogers but evidently none was made.
@ceceliaclarke91472 жыл бұрын
She may not have managed very much more dancing in that outfit. The long, heavy skirt and those high-heeled boots must have limited what she could do, without risking a really humiliating fall in full view of a Broadway audience. And the stage was probably raked...not the safest terrain for dancing in boots with heels. Even experienced, professional ballet dancers are challenged on a raked stage, which slopes from back to front. I agree that her way of moving is wonderful. I am inspired now to look for videos which show what she could actually do, in terms of dancing, at this stage of life. Thank you for your comment.

A unique opportunity to see the original Broadway staging and the original choreographer, Onna White, recreate her work for this London airing. The first Broadway Mame, Angela Lansbury had limited dance experience unlike Ginger Rogers. This choreography, which was based upon Lansbury's comfort zone, may not be a lively as one would expect, but, this number stopped the show. Rogers, who obviously had a lot of dance experience, early in her career, probably could have handled more, (the bulk of her movies were non musical). However, London productions of Broadway shows usually reflected the New York production stagings etc. Rogers clearly is vividly upbeat, with her smile and keeping her face out there for her audience in the theatre and for the camera, she loves that camera, this is obvious.....but then she was a huge Hollywood movie star and it shows in her eyes and her being. This quality, makes everyone else in the cast seem a little 'less'...but then this show was written to be played by a star.
@chocolatesouljah6 жыл бұрын
Well stated. I read once or twice over the years that they added a bit more dance to "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway when Ginger Rogers was in it because she was the first replacement and also well, cuz she was Ginger Rogers! I wished there was a bit more in this number but Mame's best dancing comes in Act 2 in "That's How Young I feel." I agree 100% that Ms. Rogers is selling it to the back of the house (and the camera) in a wonderful way. She did after all, start her career on Broadway. Interesting that 1930 "Girl Crazy" cast mate was also Dolly on Broadway.
@alivis19996 жыл бұрын
Yes, they edited out the part with the male chorus that started..."Well shut my mouth and freeze my face..".etc.but this is a good recreation of the original choreography. I saw this show several times as a teenager back in the late sixties. At that time Jane Morgan was starring. I also saw Ann Miller a couple of times. I would memorize the choreography and try to recreate it at home as I played the cast recording. Those were the days.

I know people love this show, but sorry, this number always puts me to sleep. It is just too cute and corny including the song.

Then why did you choose to watch it?

I want Mel Brooks to do a spoof of the film Mame. This is "Springtime For Hitler" in hunting pink. He could do a lot with lyrics about banjos strumming and talk of Yankees putting gypsies (did I actually hear that?) to shame....some of the other lyrics are very dodgy: The whole plantation's hummin' since you brought Dixie back to Dixieland. You make our cotton easy to pick, Mame You give my old mint julep a kick, Mame You make the old magnolia tree blossom at the mention of your name. You've made us feel alive again, you've given us the drive again to make the South revive again, Mame Seriously? She makes cotton easy to pick? I thought that was done by exploited African American prisoners who had been kidnapped, enslaved, tortured and oppressed by those who owned them? Just shocking! What a terrible piece of "so-called" entertainment. The 1960's? More like the 1860's. Just dreadful. What on earth was Angela Lansbury doing being involved in a version of this show? Her Grandfather was the local MP for Poplar (and, as such, my family's Member of Parliament). He would have been horrified. by this.

@@musicaltheatergeek79 I don't think anything should be revised or airbrushed. I hope I never gave that impression. Perhaps I don't understand the film. This could be because I have never lived under segregation or Jim Crow laws - although in they existed, in my lifetime, in the USA. I would have been ashamed to have lived under such a regime.

Sorry for being two years late. Just want to thank you for your use of the word "pink". Not many know to use "pinks" as the correct term for the scarlet jackets of a Fox Hunt Club. In the US, fox hunting in the southern states has always been somewhat informal, in comparison to the same sport in the northern states. The objective in the South, is to provide a rip-roaring, fast-as-possible, good time for all. The film versions of this musical do a good job of depicting the usual Fox Hunt of the South. Except for the fact that even for Fox Hunt Clubs, night time events are preferred. Terms and strict dress codes are not quite so important as they are for the northern state Fox Hunt Clubs. I was a member of one such club...in Pennsylvania. One of the objectives was the acquisition of "colors," which are the hunt club colors on the lapels of the rider's jacket. The way to earn colors was to ride with the hunt on a regular basis...but also, to be heard using proper terms. (Pinks...hounds, never the word beginning with "D", etc) In one of the glaring mistakes of Gone with the Wind, Scarlet uses the word "Dogs" for the Foxhounds. Never in the North or the South, or in England would any member of a Hunt Club make that mistake. They are "the Hounds" and don't refer to them with that other word, ever. I appreciate your comment, except for the reference to banjoes. I don't see how "banjoes" can be seen as racist...no one is ever going to convince me. We are living in a world in which the word "strumming" is viewed as racist. This is nutzoid, in my opinion. Thank you for commenting, with accurate terms, concerning Hunt Club jackets.

I'm with you! Check out Louis Armstong's version - noteworthy for scrapping "You make our cotton easy to pick, Mame". The movie versions taken together (non-musical and musical) are a great showcase to demo the then blindness to institutional racism. I suggest this not with any finger pointing but to share my own past naivete/oversight! Definitely worth considering the non-musical film version (R. Russell) given the breathtaking manner it exposes restricted communities (Antisemitism) while oblivious to systemic racism linked to slavery that has endured. Hopefully the Country is finally shining the light.... Happy New Year All!
