Mamiya RB67 lenses - Buyer's Checklist - a 5 minute video
Mamiya RB67 lenses were discontinued well over 25 years ago. If you're buying secondhand you do need to know what to check. My five minute buyer's checklist will hopefully be helpful;
0:00 Introduction
0:46 Checking Mamiya RB lens cosmetics
1:28 Checking Mamiya RB lens mechanics
4:34 Checking Mamiya RB lens optics

Thank you for this vid. I inherited an RB67 in mint condition with the 127mm lens. Just purchased the 55mm lens from a reputable seller and looking forward to its delivery next week. When it arrives, i now know how to test it. It will come with a 90 day warranty but i want to put it through its paces before an on camera test. I love this camera. So much fun to shoot . At 6 lbs, it's a bit much to carry as a walk around lens, but i have dont that. Excellent, clear demo and explanation. Well done, sir.

Johathan, thanks for these videos. I have had my RB pro s for 10 years but only used it intermittently because of occasional light leaks, not always cured with new seals and difficulty carrying. I finally broke down for 2 pro sd backs and that seems to have solved the first problem. The second was completely resolved by using the op tech strap across chest with the camera resting on my hip and either supported slightly with my hand or pressed against the hip. Yesterday carried it 4 hours with out any difficulty. After each shot, advancing the film without cocking the shutter not only reminds me to cock the shutter since can't see out the lens, it prevents accidental firing of the shot while carrying even with the dark slide out. The images from the 67 are definitely superior to my 645 pro tl. I weighed them both with a luggage scale and the rb comes in at 6 lbs while the full dress pro tl with elf and power winder is 5 lbs. Little wonder I have no trouble carrying the RB cross body. I use a black rapid strap on the 645 but it makes the camera hang upside down so didn't even bother with the rb. Thanks for reply to my fog/mold question on a lens I returned. The new seller said they did a flashlight test and that one is clean.

Thanks for an excellent review of how to check an RB67 lens before buying it. When I bought my lenses, the first thing I checked was for fungus on the optical surfaces of the lens. If I saw fungus, there was no need for me to check anything else because I rejected the lens.

another major optical problem for the old mamiya lens is separation.check there is the rainbow ring and haze or not between the glued lens group carefullly before you pay the money.

Great vid! What’s to stop you recording the sound of the shutter in your smartphone, then loading the audio file into your DAW and measuring that actual precise shutter speed?
@WorldwideCameraExchange
@WorldwideCameraExchange Жыл бұрын
It’s worth a try although you’re assuming Mamiya lenses click and instantaneously open and click and instantaneously close? That’s not the case. Have a go and let us know how you get on!

@@WorldwideCameraExchange I tried it, you can measure quite accurately up to around 1/30th of second, after that the two sounds start to blur into one. But the lower shutter speeds seemed to be quite close to what they should be, within about a 5% margin of error.

great review - is there any adapter or person out there who can convert these lenses for LEICA-M Mount ? Of course without range-finder option
@WorldwideCameraExchange

I’m not sure it would be practical. The lens and adaptor combination will be huge and also need to incorporate a focusing helicoid (so expensive too).

I just got a 90mm sekor c lens for my RB off of ebay. Although it has "schneideritis" where the black paint aroundd the edge of one of the elements is flaking a bit. It's only around the edges of the element and none has flaked off to the middle of the optic. Is this a big issue? The seller did refund me $100 off the lens. Assuming it doesnt effect the image or have risk of becoming a bigger problem, im thinking ill keep it. What do you think?
@WorldwideCameraExchange
@WorldwideCameraExchange 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds fair assuming it doesn’t affect performance and the glass is otherwise perfect. Remember that it may be more difficult to re-sell in the future.

@@WorldwideCameraExchange Yeah that’s what I’m thinking since the optics and physical condition are in otherwise phenomenal condition. Although I am going to put a test roll through it to make sure it has no effect on the image. Worst case I use that $100 to have it serviced in the future if one of the black bits gets on the middle of the element. Thank you! Your videos are super helpful :)

my youtube recommendations when I've bought a 127mm lens, and got empty film on the test roll because of bad fast speeds wish I had watched this video earlier

Do you see viable using mamiya 65mm f/4 on EOS R?
@WorldwideCameraExchange
@WorldwideCameraExchange Жыл бұрын
Personally I wouldn’t. You’d lose so much speed in use and gain very little.
