Since posting this video, I've learned a lot more from the rookie lad you see in this video. I totally retract my statement about my 30 MP EOS R killing any MF camera resolution, let alone a 6x7 negative. I was a rookie, and I'm still learning more about it. Thanks to anyone who explained more about that certain topic! :)

A properly scanned 6x7 negative is like a 80MP image.

I have owned the RZ67 since 1994 and love it. My RZ has never failed me. When not in use I remove the battery and release the spring mech on the lenses. By the way, I have never stopped shooting film. Although I do have Digital Nikon for my 35mm format shooting. I love my RZ. All the work I did for Siegfried and Roy was on the RZ...

FYI, 6x7 is almost 5x a 35mm negative

excellent video 👍very good summary , the rb67 SD is an excellent case, extremely versatile, 4 device in 1 with the different backs 6x45 6x6 6x7 6x8. I use 6x45 and 6x7, the lenses are really excellent, I use the 90mm KL, 150mm KL, 250mm KL Apo, it's heavy and bulky but no other medium format is as versatile I have never taken so much pleasure in taking photos than with my mamiya 😊

I just received one from Japan. It looked like it had never had a roll of film through it. I took it out and shot it developed and scanned the prints and WOW. I like the weight. I feel more steady with it. I shoot digital in my business but want to add film shots to my list. I tried an experiment with one of my customers and shot digital and then the same session I shot using my canon AE1. When she came back for the viewing she, without knowing choose the AE1 prints for most of the shots. I asked her why she choose the ones she choose, the film shots, and she said they looked warmer and more comfortable. strange description but that got me to thinking maybe there would be a place for film. So that is why I bought the RB67 pro S. We will see if it pans out. If not I will have great fun shooting it.

Great video Chris, I've recently started seeing your videos in my feed and definitely enjoy your work and get something out of them every time I watch! I think the way to look at the RZ and the RB is that they while nearly alike they are very different. Both cameras are designed to be studio workhorses, just pumping out rolls and rolls of pictures at studios day in and day out. If you're shooting table top work the RB is great, put it on a tripod and go to work. And not having to worry about a battery is nice too. The RZ I think is designed more with the hand held shooter more in mind, hence the plastic construction but the main difference aside from battery/no battery is the one stroke vs the two stroke shutter cocking/film advance. If you're shooting fashion as you know speed and ease of handling is important and the RZ is better in this regard, throw the lever once and you're ready to go. The RZ also has a motor drive you can attach to the bottom as well. And it (along with the Pentax 6x7) was the camera of choice of many of the top fashion and portrait photographers of the late 80's (Herb Ritts, David Sims among others) through now actually as it accepts digital backs like Phase One and Leaf quite easily (especially the RZ Pro IID). And you can rez up the images to astonishing sizes if you want with a lot of fidelity, it all depends on how you scan it. One last thing, if you do ever decide to change to the RZ, you can still use your RB lenses so all you need to do is change the body, just set the shutter speed dial on the RZ body to "RBL" and you're good to go. However, RZ lenses will not work on an RB. Anyway, keep up the great work!

I use a RB67 Pro-S. The all mechanical system feels nice. Never had a problem with the RB system. Love the weight of this camera.

Medium format is the way...I went full Fuji GFX50S awhile back and I'lll never regret it!

This has been my favorite video on this camera.

CAN'T get wide apertures (1.4's), because due to the film size, and the image circle required to cover the film, a lens of this design would be too huge and heavy to manage, that is why they are 3.5's or f4 lenses.

I feel like you're never fully prepared for how loud the shutter is on these medium format cameras until you hold one in your hands. I got a bronica recently and quickly realized that I couldn't take it into the library with me to photograph students studying. Also, I love what you said about how face-to-face interaction is retained retained with a waist level viewfinder as opposed to with an eye-level viewfinder. Never thought about that way, but it's such a nice thought

Hey Chris great review, my all time fave camera was the Bronica ETRSi but I recently killed it at the beach, I have a spare ETR unused in decades then this week a mate at work loaned me her old RB67 Pro S kit, cannot wait to use this beast and tempt her to sell it....I wanted the Mamiya back in my wedding photo days pre digi but the cost was insane, the Bronica fitted the job quite nicely. The last year or so I'd dug out the Bron and used it loads just love that camera made some of my fave episodes featuring that it it's so easy to use to transport just an all round good camera, saying that I'm buzzing for the RB. So good to see the bloopers at the end my channel is full of them takes sooooo long to edit a video. Liked and subbed mate.

When I was a photographers assistant we had RB67 for the studio I loved it there is something unique about the quality of the images having come back to film photography again after a break and shooting digital I enjoy shooting film so much more love to get my hands on another RB67 those 6x7 negs and beautiful

I just bought myself an RB67 having used a Mamiya C3 years ago. They are fantastic cameras with those ultra clear viewfinders.....Great for portrait and architectural.

I like the non processed look of medium format cameras, especially with skin tones. It feels so creamy and real. It's nice to take a photo of someone and not run them through photoshop.

do you have an ND filter on your lens? if so what kind? I've been trying to find a decent one for outdoors! :)

I also just bought one of these and it's on its way. I started out on 110 then 35mm film and only started doing digital around 2006. I got a 45mp Nikon D850 in 2019 and while it is amazingly capable, I've really missed shooting film and always wanted to shoot medium format. I'd been looking at Hasselblads and such for a few years but this is cheaper and doesn't shoot square. What got me looking at them again was remembering a Herb Ritts Exhibit I saw in Boston that blew me away. He shot almost exlusively with an RB67 Pro. So I looked on ebay and found the cameras were way cheaper than hasselblads. I got a great deal from a company in Japan and can't wait to start shooting with this beast.

Had the RB67 Pro S, and loved it but I wanted the RZ. I loved both, but I was worried about the electronics going out so I eventually sold it. Would recommend both, but the RB is more convenient, and you can do your own repairs

Extraordinary camera,it has only one problem:after first use you can no longer leave it, impossible,marvelous!!!!

You actually can use the viewfinder at eye level, you hold the camera to the side of your face and look side long into the view. With the rotating back you can do this and still get landscape or portrait form.

Great video Chris. I have languishing at home an old Mamiya C330 Pro, with a variety of lenses and you are quite right about the viewing angles, and consequently the 'look'. MF is lovely and when I moved house in 2004, I lost my darkroom. By the time I'd rebuilt my house from the crumbling wreck I took on - the world of digital was upon us and I never got my darkroom back. I miss it terribly. A good hand finished print is a joy. Dig with an EOS has never been the same - and it never will be. You become lazy. With 12 exposures on a roll, you looked, looked, looked before taking. Now - with huge memory cards - one tends to (most of the time, in comparison) become a garbage collector.

I have an RB67 Pro S sitting in a FedEx depot in Belgium and Probably/hopefully gonna get it on Tuesday. I also (already) have the same 90mm (floating system) lens. Can’t wait to start shooting with it.

Nice work! I’ve been shooting film exclusively for a over a year now and it’s great. Anyone interested in more portable and affordable option than a RB/RZ should consider if a TLR like a Yashica is right for them. I can’t fully agree with you on the which is better. However, I generally prefer a camera with less electronics (like the RB) because often that can suggest a longer shelf life and easier repairability.

I'm 70-year-old man using a camera since 1965, went to shooting digital and a 6x6 film now for awhile. Here is a tip for changing 35mm film in mid roll. In mid roll release and rewind film tell you hear and feel it come off the spool. And add one more or two spins. Open back, remove film, place in canister then put in a different roll. Besure to right the number of shots you took on that roll so you can go back to where you left off. It takes practice but it is possible. GRINS

I’m using an RB67 for many years now and love it but it comes at an cost... this thing is build like a tank but it’s weight reflects this. I’ve taken this behemoth to South Africa on an photo-safari and yeah it worked but an RB with two lenses, two backs, an exposure meter and an 2x Tele converter is a Ton of equipment if you fly commercially! (I’ve also brought my Minolta x700 with its gear along so screw weight limitations anyway) The pictures this thing takes are awesome and it’s fun to use but working in landscape photography it’s a huge pain in the ass to carry all of this gear to the location. And one thing to consider: the Morris in this thing is huge and very heavy (it’s weights more than some compact cameras itself). If you’re shooting with long focal lengths from an tripod, make sure this thing is solid like a rock! And get at least one additional back for this baby, it just changes everything to switch between films as you like! To sum it up; this thing is just to big to be practical but on the other side it’s super fun to work with... I’ve once set up my gear on the top of a hill, just ready to shoot and a snowstorm started right before I was ready. The only options were to pack it all up or stay there hoping the weather gets better... I’ve stayed, got an incredible shot and the experience of this moment up there.

Nice video Chris! I've got a RB67 and a RB67S, don't know what difference the SD makes, but they're great cameras, in several ways. Load it with E100, and I think you get more resolution than any digital camera, but more important a natural look that's hard to find in the world of digital photography. It's not my favourite camera for walking around though. I love the eye level viewfinder, and only that viewfinder is the size and weight of a Canon F-1.

Actually just for clarification an EOS R does *Not* have more resolution than a film photo. A 35mm negative has around 30-40MP of resolution. In fact when it comes to DLSR scanning I am limited by the resolution of my T7i (24MP) not the negative. When it comes to 120mm film, a 6x6 negative has a resolution of 80MP-100MP. 120mm Film is on par with a GFX 100/ Hasselblad H6D-100c

I never got spoiled with TTL or even needing a battery in my film work because I shot on a Pentax K1000.

i have the RZ67 with the 110mm got it for 50 at goodwill but was thinking of selling it and getting the RB mainly for the reasons you stated about the electronics possibly failing one day just still cant decide if its worth selling it since i got it for so cheap but now im thinking more about it

I own an RB and as an engineer I of course like the full mechanical design. However, I don‘t think that metal is more durable than plastic in practice. I also don‘t believe that you will easily find somebody to repair these - there are no spare parts (one exception: I could buy some third party light seals). It is probably easier and cheaper to buy some spare bodies. Also focussing is a challenge for shorter distances and wide open. The depth of field is minimal and handheld and with an even slightly moving subject that is a challenge, especially when your eyesight is not as good any more. One thing I like in the Mamiya RB/RZ is the bellows focussing, which allows to go very close - below 50 cm (the Mamiya 7 has a minimum focussing distance of a meter, which doesn‘t allow close up portraits, but the Fuji GX680 can get even closer ;-)). However, you have to correct exposure for bellow extension.

That moment you accidentally take a picture with film in the camera… oof. FYI, you can lock the shutter by rotating a ring around the shutter button. Or, by putting the darkslide in the back of the camera.

Hi I recently got my RZ67 in the mail today and when I fire the shutter, the viewfinder goes black until I recock the lever. Is that normal or does it mean the mirror is stuck and I'm not actually taking pictures?? Thank you!

I was once shooting a violin Quartet with my RB67. What I did not realize was that they were recording the performance. I take one picture and I was literally thrown out of the hall by five very angry (but silent) members of the audience.

I really enjoyed the review but there are a couple of advantages of the RZ that you fail to mention. First there re a number of interlocks on the RZ that make it more fail safe. Then you do not have to wind on the film separately on the RZ as the film advance and shutter /mirror are interlocked so one winder performs both functions. Lastly you say that the RZ is made of plastic- it isn't. The body is a metal casting and the plastic panels are in the main decorative.

The size of the 6x7 frame is almost five times more than the full frame digital sensor, or 35 mm frame.

Just my two cents but, a camera that's got a 10 year old difference to it's newer counter part has a significantly higher chance of breaking, and there's a higher chance of not having parts for replacement. The RZ does shoot without a battery in "Emergency mode" although it's locked to 1/400 it's still able to shoot. That's if the battery that lasts a very long time ever runs out. Although the RB and RZ rarely brake down because they're workhorses, neither would be less expensive than the other. The RZ is the best out of the two and the prices skyrocketing reflect it.

The RB67 is epic. I've had to hold mine upside down to get high enough to compose through a window. Now if only 120 was cheap lol.

Seems you have a few light leaks? And no a 30mp camera can not kill a 6x7 neg in resolution.

Consider yourself gifted in choosing the RB67 Pro-SD. SD magazines are better sealed against light. The RZ main failure is the film-winding mechanics. It sucks. Camera repair guys love them! I prefer winding my own and not having to rely on any stinking battery to operate the camera. That's why I still shoot my Nikon F2 cameras. Grab yourself the 180mm. Outstanding head and shoulder portraits to die for. The 100-200mm zoom with cradle is another killer of a lens! I have it on a fluid-head pro-level tripod and pro video matte box with a geared follow-focus rig. The whole setup weighs near 20 pounds! Closest focusing is a lousy 10 feet if you use the lens' focusing collar. But use the camera bellows focus in conjunction, wow!! I got 2 of them, Don't forget the bellows shade and at least another five SD magazines. I've amassed a collection of 5 perfectly near-mint operating cameras, 24 magazines, 11 lenses, 6 prism-2 finders, a dozen parts bodies and lens shutter spares. I'm set for life!! I bought my first RB back in 1980. Enjoy your beast!
