“Raymond Gates, an Ohio man who was sentenced to nine years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old, tried to explain his crime away by blaming everything but himself.
Raymond’s police testimony highlights common ways that perpetrators try to shed blame for their crimes. A Periscope video, livestreamed by 18-year-old Marina Lonina, showed the young woman yelling “no, it hurts so much,” “please stop,” and “please no,” according to police documents provided to Teen Vogue. Lonina was sentenced to nine months in prison for obstructing justice.
“It was consensual,” Raymond told Columbus, Ohio Police Detective Brent Close, according to a police interview summary.
“She tells me, 'Yes, everything's cool.' She's cool with making out. She's cool with us getting naked. She's cool with us being there, Then all of a sudden, you know, a couple of seconds before... I mean, I'm sure. That's what happens, girls are like 'Oh. It's just going to hurt' and stuff like that,” Raymond said.
He added: “She just got, like, last second. Like, 'I don't want to do this.' Then we started doing it and everything was cool.”
“This girl came back to my house, she's eighteen, she's a virgin. She's telling me she wants to lose her virginity, man, like that she's ready to do it and everything. And then right a couple seconds before, and she's like 'I don't know,' and stuff like that. I mean, that's how girls get when they lose their virginity,” Raymond said, according to the interview summary.
“I am not a rapist. I am a good guy. I have only been with a few women. I am not a rapist,” he said in a police interrogation video.”

1. Yeah, the rapist would stop raping to go stop the person reporting, which would allow the girl to get up and get away and also get help. 2. If someone had a knife and you start recording them committing a rape, you think they wouldn't stop raping and take the knife towards the person recording?! For that weird twist of logic, I call troll on you. 3. Recording is smart, but broadcasting it and then keeping it broadcast is invading the privacy of the person being raped and giving her an eternal nightmare. She can record and call the police at the same time. The only point even somewhat on the side of the girl who broadcast the recording is there's a phenomenon that happens when you're recording something: you can end up feeling removed from it. That's why some photojournalists have recorded their own death coming at them even as they're falling, and why they hold on to the camera to the end trying to focus it. But since at some point she noticed that she was getting likes, that shows that she got out of that shocked state enough that she was able to start to process events and make decisions. This is just another reason that people should be thinking about scenarios ahead of time and what they would do in those scenarios. Practice it so becomes automatic. It's simply civic and community duty to think about these things ahead of time so you don't mess up the life of somebody you want to help.

Still no. It's great that they saved their life in this scenario, but that doesn't mean you own them, just like a parent does not have the right to abuse their children. "I owe you everything" is a phrase and although they might have meant it in the moment, remember that consent is on-going. So if the guy asked for sex as repayment and the woman agreed, it wouldn't be rape because both consented. But if she didn't, then its rape. Consent it on-going, so at any moment a person can change their mind and say no, and if the other person continues that is rape.

I can relate to this story. When I was 16, I was raped by two 24 year-old men in a locked bedroom. However, I'm not sure it's always about relishing on the perpetrator being raped, but sometimes people just don't care about what happens to them since it's hard to feel any sympathy for someone who commits a crime as heinous and inexcusable as rape, since it's the only crime that has no explanation whatsoever, other than the perp being a thoroughly horrible and crazy bastard. Come to think of it, all other crimes can be explained in their origin. Theft? Perhaps you were so hungry/in serious debt/hooked on drugs/in urgency to save a sick relative you will do anything to get the money you need as soon as possible, since you're desperate and probably out any other source of income. Homicide? Sometimes you don't even mean it, can be a bar fight that went overboard or even a prank gone horribly wrong. Other times it's on self-defence (which will obviously get you acquitted since you just had no other choice). Perhaps that's why those actions are not always met with the same derision, since they're understandable if not at all justifiable (except for the self-defence thing). Rape? Not so much. The only reason for it is that you're an entitled prick who will get anything you want no matter what, since you don't give a shit about the safety and feelings of anyone else and are too self-centered and socially retarded to even realize that no one wants you around. That's why people have such a hard time feeling bad for these sick fucks when they suffer in jail. Granted, it's not OK, but it's a feeling that I understand and, I hate to admit, sometimes agree with.

I've heard so many "this is not rape" arguments like these in my life... It always makes my stomach turn. A person is literally entering another persons body while she is saying "no please stop" And he doesn't stop. How does anything she said or did before these actions even matter. How does someone have so much arrogance to believe they can/should take control over someone's body like that.

No. But from what I gather, the only people who thought it was rape, including the girl in question, who _asked to lose her virginity,_ were the people watching on the Periscope app. Even her friend, standing right there recording was never once asked for help. I don't think he raped her. But I don't know. All I know is that a lot of people would gladly ruin his life over something they had nothing to do with, and have very little information about. The police don't care about his life, believe me. A conviction is just plain better for his career than saving this kid.

Sounded like he was drunk and mistook the situation. He said they were also talking during the sex and her friend was filming like nothing was wrong so he was getting mixed signals; it's almost like he thought the girl was just insecure and saying it hurt because he broke her hymen. I'd give him a year in jail to teach him not to do that again, but I wouldn't give him 9 years like he was out on the street and grabbing strange women and holding a knife to their throats, raping them.

And this, right here, is why feminists say "Teach men not to rape". (I think "Carry out comprehensive conversation about consent" is better and catchier but hey, you take what you can get.) It is mind boggling how many people refuse to believe guys like this are out there, that people who don't think you can rape your girlfriend or wife are out there, that there are people who think men can't be raped period. It's infuriating.

What strikes me as particularly terrifying is that 1) He seems to be really clueless as to why he is being accused of rape and 2) How can he keep an erection after she is obviously become scared and unwilling to do anything? Perhaps it's just me, but any sign of discomfort from a girl turns me off right on the spot, even if it's super frustrating to be rejected at any moment (and, in my case, a bit ego-bruising, I have to admit). Normal people just suck it up and move on with our lives. Not that there won't be another chance anyway. Also, how is a girl being piss-drunk an excuse? If anything, it's an aggravant. If a person is so wasted that they can't even stand up straight, it's obvious that in no way can they make a conscious decision about anything. Seriously, what the hell?

Right. I almost took this girls virginity a while back and as we were about to have sex she started having a panic attack. Exactly! When I was raped, I had MAJOR trust issues. I still kinda do. I developed PTSD. I could barely talk to ANYONE. I was scared (still am) of anyone older than me. Except for family, of course. My own friends did it to me, so I didn't trust any of my friends anymore. And I was only 9. It's painful. Mentally, emotionally, physically. Nobody deserves that. I am forever reminded of the experience I had with those 4 boys, and I unfortunately will never forget it, and the scars are permanent. 9 years behind bars is NOTHING compared to a life sentence of mental brutality. Any rapist gets it easy.

Annie I'm so sorry you suffered. My predator was my own father for over ten years. I've been forever changed. I've lived in absolute insane fear and twenty years after telling I still suffer from PTSD and cannot have "normal" intimacy. I was completely robbed. My father got twelve years, and I got life!!! Wow I am so sorry for you. Your own father? I love my father so much, I couldn't imagine if he would do something like that to me. Honestly, people don't think being raped is too bad, but it is, and you can only know the full extent if you've experienced it yourself. Knowing there are people like you who've suffered for years from this, I can't be selfish and think I had it bad, I need to be praying for survivors like you instead. So, I will be praying for you. Words, though, are not enough to heal. Unfortunately, nothing is enough.
