Deeper into North Pangnirtung Fjord I continued on the Arctic Ocean with my dog, documenting my trip while dealing with the challenges of the expedition and Arctic survival. Polar Bear human interaction was still a concern and would be until I got deep into Baffin Island's Akshakyuk Pass. Good weather made for good wilderness travel conditions and after about four hours of hauling, I made it to the pass. I did not want to travel any more that day, and because Polar Bear danger was still a concern here by the sea ice, I decided to stay in an emergency shelter for safety. I collected snow blocks and melted water with my Double Burner Coleman Stove, drank some water, cooked dinner and went to sleep.
The next morning, I awake to extremely strong winds. It was not particularly cold out but the winds were blowing at about 80kmph and I decided to walk into them anyways. It was not a good choice. After pushing hard into the wind, I realised I'm not making it very far at all and began to sweat and exhaust myself. After making it about one or two km, I decided to turn back and I took refuge in the emergency shelter again. The day drags on and on and the weather doesn't break. Finally, late in the evening, the weather subsides. Akshayuk Pass can act as a wind tunnel and I'd experienced a little of the strong winds it can muster. I climbed in bed again, ready to begin a good day of travelling the following morning.
I awoke at about 5am to howling winds, and at first light, I discover a full-on Blizzard outside. I didn't consider travelling at all this day. It's a long and boarding day hanging out with Buck in the shelter and I kicked myself for forgetting my book. The weather had not calmed come evening and I started thinking that maybe it would never break....I started feeling a little stir crazy.
Finally, after spending three nights in the survival shelter, the weather broke and I began travelling on a beautiful morning...but as Buck and I began trekking, the wind started picking up again.

I just became aware of your channel and am enjoying this window into a world that i love and will never experience in my life time. Thank you for this. Very sorry for the loss of your beautiful iconic brother Buck. Your films are an honour to him and will live forever. I will be watching them many times over. I cried with you for your loss and it brought me back to the one of a kind dog that i had the pleasure of sharing my life with as well. My prayer is for God to maintain strength to navigate the life challenges ahead for you and your wife and son. There will not be another Buck but You know how to pick them and dogs also pick their owners. Keep your heart open to this. It takes awhile.

I am so bummed, I have been watching this series and love Buck and how good of a dog he is and I just saw your send off video. It has to be really hard to edit and post these videos with him being gone now. He was a great dog that lived the life of 50 normal dogs!!! He will be missed...

There can be no doubt, Buck has you well trained. And thank goodness, with a partner like Buck (i have not watched all of your content but it does seem that maybe Buck has passed, my condolences) your travels will be measured, safe, and the added warmth in the tent is always welcome from Buck as well as yourself. A symbiotic relationship that brings the most basic joy to the experience.

This is true, he helps me and I help him and it would be a struggle to do this trip without each other. Buck died just after Christmas right when I started editing this video series. I had to put it on hold for a while because the footage was making me say but now it feels bitter sweet. We weren’t expecting to loose him so soon.

Awesome info, thanks a lot. I imagine that means it not that old if it was made for sale America. Explorers searching for the NWP likely sailed from England and wouldn’t have stopped to buy booze in the states first. It still looked like it’d been around for some time though.

Thanks, ya it was pretty interesting. Thanks for watching. I still cry just reading the odd comment about Buck. I think I’ve moved on and then all of a sudden I’m all distraught and sad again. It just feels empty here now around my house. But I get these feelings that his spirit is around here once in a while. So, I’m still grieving and sanctifying the part of you that’s lost is part of that process for sure. Thanks a lot for watching and for your nice comment.

Here in Arviat we have those winds like that more than most. Been caught in it myself...life is put on hold when that happens and its safety first...completely accurate Jim. Enjoy the honest reflections you have. Keeps getting better.

Ya, I could imagine they do. I’ve never been there but it’s cool that you’re from there! Strong winds seem to be pretty common in the Arctic and Akshayuk Pass can act as a wind tunnel too and can get winds up to 170kmph. I hope to make it to Arviat one of these days. Do you get a big Baluga congregation in there mating season around there?

This is a wonderful series, one you can look back on with due pride. What did you do to entertain yourself in the shelter for all of those hours? The SD is possibly for Speyside Distillery an area of Scotland with the 5 being the year of bottling. The JG maybe for JG Grant whiskey which is in Glenfarclas, Speyside. The Liquor part indicates it's for the US or Canadian market.

Because he knows it’s not out of necessity so he thinks it’s a trick which he gets treats for like paw and sit. Same thing on hot days when we do a portage. He doesn’t walk back with us for the second trick.

@@JimBairdAdventurer wow what an hero. what a time to be alive and suffer. those were really iron mens, not like today where everyone live in a confort-like nursery. My father was born in 1930 in a very poor dirt road in rural beauce, quebec, with no electricity and 12 siblings, if they didnt hunted or fished, they ate what they could grow. he had his last child (me) at 59yr old. i still remember him spliting wood at 80 for hours on end, while i was about 20yr old i couldnt last for half an hour. i've always knew i was a sissy compared to a real man. I love watching your videos because its showing one of the last men in north america. congrats on the trips and the balls.
