That's basically what happens. It threatens and the other animal either runs or attacks (normally they run), it has no idea how to deal with another animal holding its ground and challenging it back so it loses its nerve pretty quick

The reason the elephant didn't trample that guy is simple: He was never planning to If an elephants ears are pinned back, then it will charge, this elephant's ears weren't pinned back If an elephants trunk is curled, then it will charge, once again, didn't happen He was just doing a mock charge for intimidation. And he himself got intimidated lol.

If the man flinched the elephant will think he has an advantage. But because he didn’t, the elephant thinks the human WANTS him to charge. Which can mean danger or a trap.
