A man who fell through the ice on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid managed to free himself and get safely back to shore. Brendan Wiltse, water quality director from Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Water Institute, noticed it had been captured on a livestream camera set up at the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on the southwestern end of the lake. The camera, set up by the Ausable River Association, is used by the Water Institute to frequently check ice and water conditions on the lake.

This person more than likely knew about the webcam... walking close to shore...how many other people do you see on the ice? 🤷

At 14 seconds as he turns around to go back the other way, watch the surface to the left, is the ice breaking or the wind blowing across the surface.

Looks to me like the ice definitely cracked on an existing crack line sending a huge air bubble outwards.

He was smart in that he didn’t go out very far. He probably was well aware the ice was very thin and he could have been a polar bear swimmer who was acclimated to going in water like that. Maybe he was in the mood to go in the water. It’s easier for me to go in the water in the winter when the mood is right than to go in the summer when the mood is not right.

@@cwflad Good morning Chris. It's not just mountains. It's the people, the foliage in October, the lakes, the world class nordic sports and venues, the dining, the high peaks, the golf and lastly, the relaxed attitude of locals. Outsiders are taking over the land a bit, but it's easy to see why.

@@markgolden154 Right but..... New Zealand.... I grew up in the Adk region but I certainly never saw anything like New Zealand there. Beauty comes in many forms I guess.

Very poor judgment or not familiar with ice conditions in the north country. Or possibly person is mentality ill. It's been a mild winter so far here and it was just 55° and rain last week.
