Min-Kyu's allergy is obviously psychosomatic. He won't have an allergic reaction as long as he believes he's touching a robot. By the same logic, if she actually were a robot, but nobody had told him, then he would have had the same allergic reaction as touching actual humans. And yes, allergies can be deadly, psychosomatic or otherwise. It's not the external allergen that kills you. It's your immune system (or in Min-Kyu's case, his nervous system) hitting the panic button.

I'm not sure about the robot part specifically, since he did deliberately or accidentally touch humans without having an allergic reaction. But you are definitely right about it being psychosomatic. I guess for him it depends on trust. His allergy pretty much began when he felt betrayed by others (most of all, by his friend), later, as he was slowly regaining his faith in humanity, his allergy eventually disappeared. Yes, he thought he was with a robot, but because she looked and acted like a real human (because she was one, but he didn't know), he seems to have started to subconsciously see her as a real human. In the end, when he felt betrayed again, his allergy returned. It was probably a lot stronger this time, because of how intense the feeling of betrayal was at that moment. He didn't even have time to hear an explanation, which could have possibly saved him (if he knew, the feelings between them weren't faked).

@@pancake-lu Agree. His allergy is tied to a distrust and fear of people, and their intentions. He didn't die on the beach though. He and the girl got together in the end, and his past issues resolved and allergy cured. I don't know why the recap stopped halfway in the story as if it were the end.

The mind is a powerful thing. His allergy is clearly psychosomatic and he's struggling with a lot of issues from his childhood trauma. It's always amazing to me how strong our minds are and how the brain tries to protect itself. The brain can compartmentalize to protect us from trauma; it's why a lot of people experience memory loss around trauma they've experienced. Some have a full on break where the brain has compartmentalized too well & they've created a whole new personality to allow the person to dissociate while the other personality experiences the abuse or whatever stimuli it was created for.

I love the concept of this movie: it reveals that we are all allergic to prolong negative states from trauma and stress. mentally, hormonally and emotionally our health is determined by our state of being and what we eat. positive emotions heal the body. Spoiler: His "allergy" to humans was actually caused by a child hood trauma. Because of his trauma he developed a fear of humans which became so strong that touching humans caused him to have difficulty breathing and his lungs to be locked. Thus forming his allergy to humans

Lol. That's not where it ends. You literally stopped two thirds of the way through. Anyone who watches a recap is prepared for spoilers. You did this series a disservice, much as I usually enjoy your content. Yes he finds out the truth and was understandably enraged and betrayed. But it ends very happily for the couple as they couldn't do without each other. He forgave, his allergy was truly cured (there's a whole other story involving his past) and they got together for good in the end.

This is the only Kdrama I’ve rewatched more than THREE times! Yoo Seung Ho’s acting is magnificent, same with other cast members. The scriptwriting is a masterpiece. Simple, yet intense. “I Am Not A Robot” will always be number one Kdrama in my heart, forever.

A quick explanation : min kyu got his allergies when he was pretty young, and another thing is it was the time he's parent's died which made him very depressed .when aji 3 came to his life ( ji ah ) he felt happiness again so he's allergies were cured but when he lost her it came back .so the thing is allergies and rash's appear on a person randomly because of stress or depression it is an actual case. (If u want to see prove u can go to Jaiden animation and watch her when she got rashes / allergies). just because he didn't get any contact with people for 15 years made it continues and severe. u also may say his doctor, but the doctor just checked on him and left they had not a lot of personal connections

I think I woke up the whole neighborhood laughing the whole time through this summary. Especially when the narrator commented after the main character kissed the “robot” on the forehead “no ring though, cheap bastard” 😂 😆 😂

Nah the "allergy" is actually a reaction to childhood trauma that causes him to stress so much that his airways close up etc. It has to do w so many ppl betraying him when he was young

He wasn't a hypochondriac because he had real physical symptoms. He had a psychosomatic condition, meaning his mind caused him to have real physical symptoms in an attempt to protect him from a perceived emotional threat.

I watched this kdrama and the reason why he didn't pay her (on their first meeting) is the box of the limited edition toy that she bought got a stain from a food. She didn't noticed but he noticed it and said that the product is defective so he didn't pay her. And also he didn't explained it better because of his allergy.
