Mike Newman originally planned to build a log cabin in Bellville, Texas. But he woke up in the middle of the night with an idea to create his own castle! It took nearly twenty years, but Newman designed and built his dream home. It comes with a moat, 3,000 pound drawbridge, chapel and courtyard. He even has a special perimeter wall to keep oncoming marauders out! Newman hosts tours and jousting lessons six days a week, along with special events like weddings and parties. Thats why you build it in secret and don't tell anyone until it is mostly complete ¡!¡ Thats what that one other guy did with his castle - the one he built himself & with some help later on when he wasn't as spry ! [ I believe he did anyway... maybe remembering wrong but maybe not ! ]

Very nice! Certainly does not look nothing like medieval castles for many reasons, (one was explained by himself: the bell tower), but to me the blocks gives it away pretty quickly, medieval castles were built with hand cut stones that are never perfectly rectangular like this one.

Some castles were built with bricks in the latter high medieval age, as well as late medieval age. Bricks became really common and were the primary construction material for a lot of defensive castles until castles weren't that important anymore for defending a nation.

He acting like he built it by himself is classic. That place wasnt cheap. There is no tools around that was used to build it also no trucks that were used to haul amy materials whatsoever. Still impressive none the less! Congrats

Did you say you want modern castles? Here's an idea for a fully functional modern day castle. A German style concrete flak tower (WWII era) as a keep. Some motte and bailey with ballistic protection features with concrete apartment wings. Finally a mini city with commercial and residential zones surrounding the castle. You got yourself a tiny modern fiefdom or manor system that makes your lord of the land. LOL

He didn't say when I went there, he started building it back in 1998 and is a work in progress. For now he has 12 bed rooms with baths. Some are complete some are not. But all together materials wise it probably cost about 500,000 to 750,000 JUST MATERIALS. Not including work or time spent. But yes he is a nice person and he keeps bees on the property to which he sells raw honey and makes mead from it which he gave to us on a tour.... it was very good. Tours are 20 dollars. And its worth it.

generally speaking the materials he used were on the cheaper end like cinderblocks and sheet metal roofing, which greatly reduce the overall cost while still being pretty strong. he also likely had other assets he sold like another piece of land or some buildings/ houses. the lumber though is impressive and the high bell tower. those must have cost him a fortune each, unless the lumber was reclaimed.
