Being a Ibew 102 lineman out of parsippany, NJ for over 20years and working with electricity throughout the USA, thus is why my name is stormtrooper. I was injured by 4,800 volts in 2007 and had to be medivac to saint barnabus burn center while working in NJ at the time. A word to the wise from a lineman if you are ever in a vehicle accident and hit a power pole you should NEVER exit your car until help arrives. Nor should you go near a car that has hit a power pole until you know that power is not present. The only time you should exit your vehicle in a circumstance like this is if your car or vehicle is on fire. At which there is a process to do this safely without electrocution due to what is called Step Potential. There are videos online to watch if you are ever in this situation. Be safe and stay in the clear.

If a power line comes down onto your RV or a vehicle you are riding in, DO NOT exit the RV/vehicle. Stay inside. If you exit the RV/Vehicle, and touch the ground while touching the RV/vehicle, you'll be blasted into the next galaxy. Stay inside.

I'm not an RV traveler and probably never will be. The information you shared about the power lines is something everyone should know which is the reason I subscribed. While I may never travel to Alabama it's good to know what their laws are on GPS usage. If I have forgotten to put an address into my GPS I will do one of 2 things. First I may pull to a curb and briefly park on the street where it's legal to park, turn my engine off, and put the address in. Then I start up again. The other thing I will do is pull into a parking lot, find a parking spot, put the address in, and then go back to my route.

If you need to be told that gps data entry should only be done when safely parked, you should have a guardian, not a driver’s license.

Hello Lzzy and MJ , I'm from Alabama but traveling and seeing America now for over 2 years. When I was living in Alabama about four years ago. I was stopped turn left on a one lane highway . This truck three vehicle's behind me hit the car in front of him that ended up hitting me . The car behind this truck that caused this whole accident was a friend of my . She told the police that the driver of the truck was talking on his cell phone. She stated she had just made the statement that he was going to get someone hunt because he was traveling around 60 mph when he came around her in a 35mph zone. She stated he did not even put on his brake at any time. Well I can tell you my back hurt for several months after this accident. So I'm proud of Alabama but its the 3% that has caused this to effect the rest of us. I hope they will be somewhat fair about this law.

Ohio has a fairly new distracted driver law but is already being challenged in court. That's because it often based upon an officer's opinion or what they thought they saw but lacks any proof. One guy claims the officer pulled him over as a distracted driver when he reached to shift gears. Technically you could be guilty of being distracted when looking in your mirrors or reading a road sign because your eyes are off the road.

Right after hurricane Katrina came through Baton Rouge there was a live power line lying in the road. I stood at my driveway to alert drivers (using a flashlight). A police officer eventually came and chewed me out for waiving a light around and told me it was not my concern about the power line.

Oh my God, that's terrible! Downed power lines tend to be high voltage, no one should attempt to interact or go near them. Very sad. As for distracted driving, I see it all the time. We have one job to do when behind the wheel - pay 100% attention to handling the vehicle you are driving in a safe and responsible manner. Another thing that I see too often but a condition for which more states are passing laws to address is moving over and/or slow down when an emergency vehicle is on the shoulder of a highway. I think this is especially important when driving a large vehicle like an RV. Think of the people who are on the shoulder and how freighting it can be to be in close proximity to a speeding vehicle, it's more than just a courtesy, it's about safety!

At 72 I still love to ride my motorcycle. I've been riding all my life with over 1m miles on them. New-age drivers are what is going to make me stop. I've been almost hit/run over ~6 times in the last 2 years! A professor told me once there is enough power in a lightening strike to run a city for a year! Be afraid! If your not sure, stay put, till you get an "all clear"! The lines at the top of the poll's have the most power/amps, but they are all "very dangerous"! Please be very careful around anything electric!! Peace --gary

Something similar happened in my area, several years ago. It was raining, power line had gone down - down the street from a schoolteacher. His dog ran out the front door and he went out after him - both perished through the electrical shock. From what I understand the power line wasn't even close to his house - so I'm not sure if 30' is safe enough.

Update- alcohol was a factor. Last night a father and son were in a terrible accident while camping. Not sure if they had an RV or not. They were in a Land Rover and on a forestry dirt road. Mud tires are NOT good on dirt roads because their wide deep treads REDUCE road contact. They are great for snow and mud- but pavement and hard roads with dust not so good. So as many people do (there's an accident or two over the bank weekly here on those roads in the summer) they were driving fast having fun- lost control and went over the side. The 13 year old boy was flown out to a larger hospital in another county- the father's body was recovered. A horrible ending to a vacation. PLEASE GO SLOW ON THESE ROADS. THIS IS THE SECOND FATALITY SINCE MEMORIAL DAY, not even 2 weeks in, on this same road. There have been other accidents as well and fatalities but the forestry and BLM roads are particularly dangerous because hard dirt and fine coat of dirt and dust are unforgiving and they don't really care how fancy your car is. Another RV warning- a few years ago grandparents and grandchildren were on a road trip. The grandson wanted a game in a cabinet- Grandma went to get it, stood on a stool (the RV was moving) they hit a bump or corner and the stool tipped, grandma fell and fell against the door, the door popped open and she hit the road and died.

The reality is, for interstate highways, Alabama doesn't have a lot of troopers. I could see some smaller jurisdictions being more active with it. My infotainment system has limited input functions when I am driving. I am locked out of changing my onboard GPS, unless a passenger is detected in the passenger seat. And my parking brake automatically engages if I park on even the slightest incline and must be manually disengaged before the car will shift into drive. Clearly a lot of newer cars are smarter than their drivers.

Does no good to have laws against distracted driving, when you have cops in patrol car’s texting while driving in their patrol car. Just like the Texas cop I caught texting while sitting in his patrol car in a 4 way intersection, when he had the green light that I saw tonight. The look on his face when he realized he had been caught as a distracted driver, while on duty in his patrol car was a classic. I could have understood if he had pulled off the road and parked in a parking spot or in a parking lot, but not while siting in the road at an intersection on a green light.

The Hands-Free Georgia Act was signed by Governor Nathan Deal on 2 May 2018 and took effect on 1 July 2018. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, hosts numerous distracted driving checks during the year. Here’s the basics: Drivers cannot have a phone in their hand or touching any part of their body while talking on their phone while driving. Drivers cannot watch videos when they are on the road. Drivers may listen to streaming music that does not include videos on the screen of their phone or device while driving but cannot touch their phones while on the road to activate or program any music streaming app. Georgia law enforcement is very serious about reducing impaired and distracted driving. Please do not drink and drive, wear your seat belts, put your phone down, and use proper child restraints. Lou from Georgia.

Now in saying that anyone playing around with anything that requires eyes off the road is both dangerous and stupid.

The assumption here is that the offender has crossed the line, weaved, sped or performed any other illegal action. Those are reasonable reasons to pull a driver over, by any decent standard. It doesn't give the officer carte blanche. Again, this is the assumption.

The last thing we need is to give police more discretion.

And what cracks me up with humans and their silly ways, all the new cars have a digital dash. Recently got a loner car for our beloved 2011 Outback. The new one required you to go into a touch screen to adjust temperature, turn the heated seats on, etc. My silly question; how can you possibly do that without looking at it, (YOU CAN’T), LOL. Fast forward to forcing EV’s on everyone. They all operate from touch screens so everything you do requires looking at the screen = taking eys off the road, lol. Maybe they’re in in together. Fix the car where you have to be distracted to operate it, then get the law to ticket you for trying to operate it, lol.

Are you kidding me? we have people that are watching porn while driving here in Arizona. A truck driver killed a highway patrolman while looking at smut. Should the law also hold the people that are producing porn accountable ,you know the way they hold social media companies accountable for ruining young people's lives. Where does it all end , everyone seems to be a target when it comes to this stuff. What in the world is going on nowadays? Doesn't anyone pay attention to what they are doing? it really is ridiculous.

Oklahoma also has a distracted driving law. So beware. You may get a ticket for taking a sip from your pop.

And if you're a police officer, your laptop should be closed while driving or in the back seat.... UNLESS you have superpowers the rest of us don't have.

I have data which suggests the steering wheel is distracting to drivers, so they must be removed!

The cops are completely exempt from the distracted drivers laws, I guess they walk on water and can talk on the cell phone to their friends and play with the computer while talking on the radio during a 140 mph chase, they are just amazing 😞

Great advice, stay in your car when you see downed power lines. The other one always gets to me, as I live in Australia, it's called a hand brake, not an emergency brake. The park position is not 100% hold, so put the hand or foot brake on before you get out of your car.
