My husband and I had a close call about a year ago. We were in our car on I 44 East in central Missouri. We stopped at a rest area after dark. First mistake. There was one pick up truck parked kind of far from the building in the parking lot. We got out and went inside to use the facilities. There were three young men inside at the vending machines. We walked past them and went into the restrooms. While I was in the restroom, I could hear the guys messing around with one of the vending machines. They were shaking it like they were trying to get something out of it. As I was finishing, I literally prayed, “Lord, I don’t know who these men are or what they intend to do, but please protect us.”🙏🏻We both came out of the restrooms a minute later, and they had gone back outside over by the pick up truck. My husband wanted to get each of us a bottle of water out of our cooler in the back seat. I got in the car, and he opened the passenger door behind the driver seat to get the water. The next thing I know, the pick up is right next to me! I yelled at my husband, “Get in the car! Get in the car!” He slammed the passenger door shut, jumped in the drivers seat and we took off out of there like a bat out of hell! That was absolutely terrifying! We agreed that we will never stop at a rest area again after dark. We will go to large gas stations or truck stops where there are lots of lights and people in the future.

I'm a former cop. Times are changing and there are very malevolent people out here. You have to maintain situational awareness at all times out here, people. You have to see the problem before it gets too close to you, so you are prepared to address it when it does. Or you can at least have time to retreat, lock doors or get somewhere safe. I've had a close call at a well known truck stop while road-tripping in the car. (Ret LE). This dude was scoping for victims. Obvious to me, but not the rest of the folks at the pumps. I got my husband on the phone and explained the scenario. I was armed. I had to get fuel or I would have left. He stayed on the phone and I got the fuel and left. But this dude was hiding behind a post. I stared him down when he came out and gave the glare and the stance that showed I was ready. Hubby still has the play by play. Dude decided I wasn't going to be easy and walked to the other side of the lot and stood in the dark, just watching. I didn't feel safe walking inside the business or I would have made them aware. I seriously needed to be at feet. This place was busy too. Never get complacent. I always seem just a little more crazy than they are. And if you have words, make your voice loud so EVERYONE hears what you're telling this person. If you say back off, or go away...make sure EVERYONE hears your warning.

My big thing - wearing earbuds!!! You are totally NOT aware if you are wearing earbuds - either pumping gas, walking across the parking lot, in stores - do not wear earbuds. Here in Cincinnati a woman was walking downtown wearing earbuds - totally UNAWARE that a bank robbery was going on. People were trying to get her attention but she couldn't hear them - she either walked in front of the bank or was trying to go in bank - can't remember - but she was shot and killed. Earbuds are so dangerous and are another distraction (like you mentioned people on their phones unaware of surroundings).

I’m a retired deputy from N CA. I’ve arrested people for every violent crime you can imagine. After 9 years of being retired I’m still aware of my surroundings everywhere, including travel. We almost fulltime RV but still have a home. Not everyone is comfortable with firearms (especially my wife). She understands why I carry, it’s just my job. I’ve taken every advanced course on pistols, rifles, shotguns, active shooters, etc, but I also understand liability. My background would make my liability higher than an average Joe. I’ve never had a failure with pepper spray. It takes the fight out of people very quickly. Must less liability if you make a mistake. I hope many people read this if on the fence or wouldn’t consider a firearm, but maybe this as an alternative. Learn how to use it as well.

@@markpillori Yes, agree about the use of pepper spray. I commented that there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN the commercially offered Pepper Spray and the Military CS Grade Pepper Sprays or the Law Enforcement CS Grade Pepper Sprays used for CROWD CONTROL. The commercially offered Pepper Sprays sold in most stores are most often NOT powerful enough when used on someone Under The Influences of Medications and/or Illegal Controlled Substances. XYZ Period. Your uses of Pepper Spray and your lack of failures with its use clearly indicates you were mostlikely using Law Enforcement regulated CS Military Grade "Pepper Sprays". Most private individuals are unable to purchase those CS grade levels of Pepper Sprays, or certainlynot at thoselevels of concentration. ISN'T THAT CORRECT? IF NOT, when did they change their availability for purchase by the average consumers? They didn't used to be able to purchase those HIGHER GRADE LEVELS.

Good vid. Fmr LEO here, who carries all day, every day. Yes, I urge anyone who travels to have the means to defend themselves AND get the training needed. Also want to reiterate awareness. My wife is still working. Provost of a large TX university. As I take her to work, I'm astounded at the nearly 100% of folks stepping off the curbs, walking in front of cars, walking sometimes into trees, because their cellphone is their focus. Add to that, 9 times out of 8, they have earphones in. This can't be for the traveller. Bad Guys really do target 'travel places' such as rest areas, truck stops, tourist attractions. The BG's know that the family on vacation has their guard down and usually had physical cash on them in great amounts. Sorry for that elderly couple. Jeepers, I'm now in that crowd. Just remember--we are our first responders, especially in the way out areas like rest stops, truck stops and tourist spots. When I first went on patrol, our response time was an average of 6 minutes in a rather large TX city. Today, it is 4-6x that. Get prepared, get trained.

Get comfortable with the U.S. Constitution-specifically, the Second Amendment-and you will 💯enjoy a new lease on life. No longer will you fear rest stops, or any other areas within the public domain. Jesus counseled: _“Look! I am sending you forth as sheep amidst wolves; therefore prove yourselves cautious as serpents and yet innocent as doves. Be on your guard against men.”_ -Matt. 10 : 16, 17 Be "on your guard against men" indeed, but being "innocent as doves" need not mean that we must cower in fear of living life to its fullest. 🙏 I'm speaking from experience-both as a man of God and as a rational adult, unafraid, and prepared to handle any situation Satan cares to present.

This is the end times and evil will continue to become bolder until Jesus returns to put an end to it . After 26 years as a LEO I always taught my staff two things, 1) You don't need it until you need it-then it's too late, always be prepared. 2) The sesame street theory goes ALONG WAYS when it comes to dealing with bad people. When one of these things is not like the others, there is your problem. When you are aware and focus on your surroundings, something that is different will stand out to you. My radar is always on, it's not something we can turn off after we retire. We were in Aruba this past March and I observed two individuals following us. We took a sharp turn and I grabbed my wife's hand and we turned towards them to make them aware that we knew what they were doing, they quickly left us. We always lock our doors, even in broad daylight at home. We all know that forced entry is much easier to prove, and it is considered as self defense if you need to use force to protect yourself. Bottom line is bad guys are lazy. Make it hard for them and they will move on to someone else or some other thing.

LEO and retired LEO can carry in every state. If you are a regular Joe Smoe like most of us you are charged with a felony in disgusting states like Maryland, New York and Illinois. In my home state and states that recognize my concealed carry permit I always carry a gun. I don’t have as much as as a speeding ticket on my record. Shame on LEO in states like New York and Maryland who enforce these draconian laws. How do they sleep at night? Disgusting. They are directly responsible for tragedies such as this. I am traveling to Nebraska in my RV this summer to meet my brother at a campground for a week. He is from Oregon. I had planned on staying at a rest area for a night. After reading about this attack, I booked a campground instead. Politicians who support these laws and law enforcement who have the audacity to enforce these laws have stripped me of my right to protect myself and my family. The law as usual, does apply to them. They are as usual, is most situations, above the law and have the ability to protect themselves and their families Absolutely shameful. If you are active LEO or retired LEO I am interested in hearing your rationale behind enforcing these laws that directly violate the Second Amendment rights of the majority of citizens and put individuals and families at risk to suffer a tragedy such as this.

As a former Nebraskan who has stopped at that rest area many times, it's definitely an upsetting and tragic story. I am a full-time solo RV'er and also disabled and a full-time wheelchair user. I realize I am "vulnerable" and thus do pay attention to my surroundings. Things I do - pay attention first. I don't open the door until I've looked around. Pretty much never open it at night. If there are trucks around - I'm parking closer to the nicer newer trucks and if I can I'll make eye contact with drivers and say hello. I only get gas at big well established retailers (usually loves) because they are well-lit and you know there are cameras around. Lastly, I travel with a 140 pound Great Dane. He's a friendly guy, but is protective of me and is always looking around. One more thing - I'm solo but regularly "talk" to others. "Okay, I'll be right back" or "do you need anything from inside" as I'm leaving my coach tells people I'm talking to someone inside (even though I'm not). I do have a general rule that I don't open the door at night unless someone is in a law enforcement uniform and I can see a marked patrol car. I also don't tell people I'm alone unless I really have to (like when border patrol asks how many people are inside). Just so people know, I do feel safe traveling this country. I'm not naive, but most people are good people and will help when asked. I have been helped out of some tricky situations. I'm boondocking in remote forest-service land tonight and feel 100% safe.

I do carry a legal firearm. It is small and concealed on me at all times. Security is a priority. For me, self-awareness is extremely important. There are a lot of bad people out here. Given my background in competitive shooting, firearms instruction, and self-defense, it's pure muscle memory to scan my surroundings and be situationally aware. I'm generally armed, and though my wife is well-trained and licensed she prefers not to carry and she's developed focus challenges with aging and hormone changes. She does carry pepper spray, but I also have her carry a miniature air horn. That horn can not only signal distress, but put against the ear or even in the face of a perpetrator it makes for a powerful, disorienting pain generator! I hate that such needless violence destroys families and miss the days where Americans looked out for one another. I was definitely different when I was a young man, and the current state of our society is definitely not what I served for!

I bought a new 5th from General Trailer that's another story (thieves) on my way back from Florida we stopped at the first rest area in Ohio, another 5th pulled next to me, while in the building, standing at the window looking over the parking lot at my rv I saw two young men running between the two rv's. Thought nothing of it. The next stop I use to check things. Low and behold someone removed the safety pin from my 5th wheel hitch. The trailer could have come loose and killed someone. I recommend you put a lock on the hitch.

Over the years I have traveled alone to many famous and no so famous Civil War battlefield in the east. I live in KY and there was a Civil War fort about 150 miles from where I live that had been on my list to visit. One day I was in the area and decided to go ahead and visit this fort. Visitors had to park at the bottom of this hill and then walk up to the fort. The fort, I learned later, was a little ways from the main trail. So, I parked and got out of my car. I started walking up the hill and suddenly my body started shaking all over with fear. It was telling me not to go up the hill to visit the fort. I turned around, walked back to my car and left. Hi guys! As always, thank you for posting this news as it is so important to know the reality of the harm out there. My husband and I had a situation in a campground in Tennessee where we were in a pull through site which happened to be the last site in the campground. I work remote from our RV so I was inside during the day working and had no idea this was going on. My husband was outside doing some maintenance to the RV when a car pulled up behind our RV on our site. A woman was driving and a man got out. He was asking my husband a few questions about the park and my husband said "you need to go into the office, which you just passed on the way in". Then the man says how he really likes our rig (we have a Ford truck and 5th wheel) that it looks really good, then proceeds to ask if my husband was married, had any kids, what he did for work. Just all these odd personal questions. We think he was feeling out how many people were with the rig. My husband said he is not answering and questions and he needs to leave. So the man got in the car and left. That night we were on edge thinking they were going to come back and break in. We do carry firearms in our rig so we were prepared but still a very scary situation. You just never know what someone will do or what they are thinking. You are 100% correct that you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Safe travels!

For those so don’t feel comfortable carrying a gun there are taser rods. They’re about 3 to 4 feet in length and look like a flashlight they’re non-lethal but it’s enough to make the person back up and give you that moment to get away. They also now have a glove that actually has pepper spray mounted in it so while you’re walking, your pepper spray is actually attached to your hand.

As a retired LEO, a tip for those of you who carry a pistol in public, when we went to firearms training the instructors would place a water bottle water with each training information packet, and unknown to us at the time they would turn up the heat in the classroom, they would tell us we need to hydrate and do everything possible to ensure that during break time we would have to use the restroom. When break time arrived the restroom would have a line of people waiting to use the facilities, ( which was their ultimate goal for this lesson) during the break an instructor or two would go into the restroom and walk up behind an officer using the men's urinal, the instructors would wait until the officer was urinating, then push their back or head into the restroom wall while reaching for and either attempting or successfully removing their firearm from their holster, anyone failing to retain their firearm was sent home for the rest of the day. The lesson they were teaching was if you are armed, use a stall instead of the urinal because it provides more protection/security while using the restroom. They would tell us most people do not pay attention to their surroundings when they use the restroom, they are focused on the task at hand and this leaves an opportunity for those looking to steal your firearm or grab your wallet etc... ( they would use much more colorful language to explain it ) Over the years when traveling etc... I have asked officers from different jurisdictions if they were taught this in training and I found very few departments teach this specific firearms retention lesson in any form, but those I have asked all agreed that a stall offers a much higher degree of safety when using the restroom and it was not something they had really considered in the past.

I'd love to take firearms training with LEOs. I was a Nor-Cal Bay Area firefighter who went through the Stanford paramedic program when they'd added a 1 week module to the end of the course called 'Street Survival for EMS.' We trained with instructors from San Jose PD. The scenario exercises were awesome to illustrate our vulnerabilities and develop good habits. One simple habit to, "Always watch the hands," may have saved my life months later in my new role as a medic. I was kneeling next to, and beginning assessment of a patient. They had reached into their sweat pants pocket and pulled out Kleenex twice to blot their nose, but I still paid attention to the hands the 3rd time they went into their pocket and recognized the butt/grip of a handgun as it began to appear at the top of their pocket. This was exactly one of the scenarios we'd trained for! I went with two hands on as much of the the body of the gun as I could cover, dropped a shoulder into them and while driving them into a wall I rolled toward their back. I stripped away the weapon while controlling the direction of the muzzle - exactly the way we were trained! I was shaking, so this obviously scared the hell out of me, but I also laughed because I couldn't believe what just happened and how instantaneous my reaction was, and that it worked in a real world incident! From beginning to end was under 2 seconds with zero time to think. (Funny how time slows down in the moment, though. Decades later, I still have the incident recorded to my mind's hard drive at 60 frames per second. 😄) All the credit goes to the San Jose PD instructors who imagined this scenario, then trained us to a level of competency through repetition that made my habit of watching the hands and reaction automatic. Needless to say, I'd love to have that quality of training with firearms. Finally, I appreciate the tip! I have a CCW, and while I appendix carry, I'll still be choosing a stall and closing the lock to minimize vulnerability going forward. Cheers!

I actually had that same scenario of a man asking me to come out of my RV and look at something. Here's the story and what I did: I had a Class B at the time and was traveling back to Texas with my young grandson. I had backed into a space at Love's the night before, up against a curb. I had stayed there numerous times before with no problems. Sometime during the night I heard a car pull up next to my RV and park there. I didn't give it much thought as people pulled in all the time. The next morning I made a big mistake, one that I had never made before (and won't ever again). Before I was ready to go, I opened all the shades and took down the front window covers. Normally, I wait until I'm completely ready to pull out. It wasn't more than 60-90 seconds later the man in the car next to me was knocking at my front window. I looked up and he was asking me to roll down the window (I didn't). I just asked him what he needed. He kept trying to get me out of the RV by telling me that I was going to scrape my tanks when I pulled out and that I needed to come take a look at the back of the RV. First, I'm not stupid. I knew exactly where the back of the RV was, and I also knew if I was going to scrape that I would have heard it the night before. He was persistent, insisting that I get out. I finally yelled back toward my grandson (whose look was hilarious), that "it's ok babe. This guy thought we were going to scrape when we pulled out, but we aren't going to. Are you ready to go?", making it sound like I was talking to my husband. I jumped in that driver's seat, started it up and took off. I didn't stop until I got to the next town and then I parked it and finished getting ready. NEVER roll down the window, NEVER unlock the doors, and NEVER take down the shades until you are ready to pull out. That one mistake could have gotten me hurt or killed.

As former PMC I completely agree with your awareness and prep, ( a few more magazines isn't overkill IMHO). Yes 95%of population simply don't see surroundings which usually are home-turf for the local criminals . We need our love-ones and ourselves alive not at the cemetery .

The wife and I are considered "elderly" and we both have concealed weapons permits. We also carry non-lethal deterrents such as pepper spray, not just for quadruped predators but also bipeds as well, and we don't want to be forced into choosing between the morgue or prison as our next adventure. Always become proficient with your protection devices. Pepper sprays and stunning devices may seem simple to use but practice with them anyway.

My rules: We rarely stop at a Rest Stop. If we do, it has to be busy and it has to be daylight. We never go into their bathrooms. We use the 1/2 bath in the RV. Our only reason for stopping is simply to take a 20 minute power nap. If we need a bathroom, we stop at a Cracker Barrel and use it there. Our RV is never unlocked. Never. We always stop for fuel during the day at a busy truckstop like Loves. My wife stays in the locked up RV while I fill it with diesel. I never look at my phone. Instead, I look at everything around me. I never exit the vehicle without my stun gun on my left side and my Byrna on my right. I practice often pulling each from their holster and I have taken classes and becomed trained on how to act quickly and properly. If someone starts to approach me, I politely ask them to stay 10 feet away and state their reason for coming towards me. A few truckers told me to F off, but one bad guy in Richmond, Kentucky asked what I was going to do about it. I pulled by Byrna and my wife had her 45 in her hand pointed toward him. He said nevermind and walked away. We never arrive at a campground without an hour of daylight left. We don't stay at Walmarts or other stores. The parking lots are not safe anymore. Finally, we have two deadbolts along with the door lock on our RV. We also have a bar that goes across the inside of the door that makes it impossible to pry it open. Finally, we have a dog who likes the taste of human flesh. 😂 If we must stop and we have any concerns, he comes with us. He went to a police dog training facility and he will attack a Nun if we tell him to. He tends to scare away most thugs. Sadly, we've had a few encounters with stupid people. We always win because we are trained, armed, prepared to end someone's life to protect our own, and we do everything we can to stay out of bad situations.

I was unaware of your channel and don't even have an RV. However, your message is 100% correct. Everyone should hear these points, and your realistic, no-nonsense approach is best. As a safety consultant, I can tell you we are faced with an uphill battle. 1. People don't want to believe danger is out there. 2. People don't want to listen to the ways to mitigate risk. 3. People are lazy to the point of complacency, where they are willing to trade safety for blind routine and least amount of effort. Spread your message. Well done. I would add that all citizens exercise their Right to self defense, and if you are restricted locally do what needs to be done to change those restrictions. The elderly, females, etc. need an edge against bad guys. Arm up. Train. Train. Train. Keep your head up, eyes open. That text isn't an emergency. Answer it when you're safe. Trust your gut and leave an uncomfortable place. Great video.

I'm an older person now, sixty six, and for the past twenty or so years whenever I travel I'm always aware and looking around when I stop for a bathroom break or just to stretch my legs. We live in a very dangerous country now, and unfortunately, losers like this kid who attacked this couple look for easy targets. This is a very sad case for sure. I don't know if it's paranoia that makes me this way or just a general awareness of the world we live in. Even on the occasions when I may go to a state park here in Ohio, of which we have many lovely ones, I'm somewhat on edge due to two legged "problems" I may encounter rather than one from nature. Luckily, here in Ohio we have constitutional carry laws, so I'm able, constitutionally, to have my firearm with me, but in the parks, only if it's visible, which I do carry it in a holster. May this gentleman rest in peace and his wife fully recover.

As someone who has ridden a motorcycle solo to 44 of the lower 48, I will say that the fuel and rest stops along I-80 contain some of the saltiest looking freaks of all. You can be in overall extremely safe states like NE, WY, etc. but the stops along I-80 are full of transients, general weirdos, unhappy people, junkies moving across the country with a mattress on their roof, whatever. Any interstate is prone to this but I-80 is THE corridor for San Francisco - Chicago - NYC, so there you have it. Be alert.

Travelling to Florida this past winter, from Canada, we noticed a huge uptick in potential problems. Even grocery shopping where we always went for the last 16 yrs was different. It was eerie. We have a very mouthy dog with a huge bark, thank God, so when she was with me, I never felt unsafe. We had a guy knock on our door at 11:30 at night. Said he had a flat tire and needed a jack. I told my husband, don't go out there, this could be one of those things we see on the news. The guy wasn't afraid of our dog barking in defense mode either. After the guy left and went back to his car, we could see it across the parking lot, my husband went out to see what kind of a jack we had. Fortunately, this was actually someone who needed help. We didn't have what he needed but he called a friend and was later gone. Could have been very bad. Also, there was a bus load of 'non citizens' being transported to who knows where at a Flying J we stopped at. Texas license on the bus. They are everywhere and I am on high alert at all times. This year was very different from all the others. Very scary times. We're not going back. Thankyou for your info! I have subscribed.

Aw, man, that sucks. Back when I taught chem lab in college, safety consumed the entire first lab session. And the number one lesson was “think through all the emergency situations and make your decisions what to do BEFORE you face the real thing. Failure to do that is why people freeze up and get killed.”

Remember your ABC's: Always Be Carrying! Remember: YOU are your own first responder. Police arrive after the fact and fill out reports. The average attack is over in less than 3 minutes. No police department has that response time. Many good comments below! We always carry and stay vigilant. If one person is occupied with a task such as changing a tire the other should be on watch.

Good Video. Well done. I am 79 and wife is 78 and we have done considerable RV ing and I always tried to be aware of surroundings and constantly tried to get my spouse to practice the same awareness. I think your video and advice is excellent and it should apply to all travelers on the road. We have made many road trips across country and been very fortunate. However there were times when I must admit I had questions and concerns regarding surroundings. I also think your advice could apply to stops at motels and overnight lodging. The world is becoming more unsafe everyday.

This just tears my heart out. You definitely have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Doors need to be locked whether your at home , in your car, or in an RV. Thank you for sharing this story. In the last week an elderly friend of ours was robbed at gunpoint at a crowded bus station. Then another couple was apparently robbed at the same establishment, and he fought back. He stabbed both perpetrators, they were taken for treatment and will be going to jail.
