I've been following her since I first saw her on AGT when she was only 12 years old with her original song "I Don't Know My Name" .... I saw that performance live and I knew then, along with thousands of others, that Grace was "Special". She's only 20 years old now, and what a career she has; singer, song writer, performer, and now a promising film career with her latest one directed and produced by Frances Ford Coppala .... I am in agreement all the way, Dax. It's got that (now iconic) wordplay or double meanings going on. "Man Up" means grow a pair. "Next man up" is inviting the player to step into the batter's box. Then she opens the song with the "Down/Up" wordplay. I swear those horns in the resolve are the same horns from the "Rocky Theme"....Ha Ha! It sounds just like them. Great reaction, Dax. I sit her in Finland and hope it warms up for you. We still have 4 months to go!

Two items - this was a collaboration, even though Grace's fingerprints are all over the lyrics; and this was done in one day. The band camp had three days of writing sessions and each day was a different song and a different group composition. Here's the group that did Man Up - Grace VanderWaal (Chris Petrosino, Sam Hollander, Ray Angry, Andrew Maury). Grace also did the vocals (among other things) for "She" (also captured by the Bean Pot) - she - Grace VanderWaal (Sur Back, Meg Smith, Emei). We don't know how the groups were formed - I'm thinking something along names drawn from a hat - but each group had a vocalist, a producer, and musicians. And yes, Grace "plays" that magnificent instrument - her voice - to great advantage here. And for the record - Grace is the only voice here. Great reaction, as always!

She seems to be following other young female vocalist's (don't need to tell you who) lead by incorporating retro instrumentation and rhythm into her songs. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I guess.

Like most of Grace’s music, the more I listen to this song the more I like it. It is on a completely different level from any her last four duds. This song gives hope that Grace will return to her musical roots rather than pursue a career as a poor man’s Millie Bobby Brown or Gisele Bündchen. Hopefully she will write a few songs for the soundtrack to _Megalopolis,_ which would give her some much needed exposure. (The best things to come out of the two _Stargirl_ films were the two songs Grace wrote.) What gives me slight pause, however, is that Francis Ford Coppola chose Grace to be a part of his mega-project, and he is a far better judge of acting talent any of us are. So maybe Grace does has acting chops but we already know that Grace is a generational musical talent. Unlike the _Stargirl_ films, I am looking forward to _Megalopolis,_ with its cast of current and former a-listers Shia LaBeouf, Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Zendaya, Dustin Hoffman, Talia Shire, John Voigt, James Caan, Jude Law, Cate Blanchette, Michelle Pfieffer, Lawrence Fishburne, Forrest Whittaker and Jessica Lange.
