Michael Bailey, JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie are here to talk about some football.
Manchester United ended their five year trophy drought by beating Newcastle United in the League Cup final.
We discuss if this is the symbolic start of something good for Erik Ten Hag and his team, and if the League Cup is a minor or major trophy…
In Scotland, Celtic win another League Cup and we ponder if the dominance of Ange Postecoglou’s side will keep on going. Forever.
Tottenham find themselves in the top four after beating a defensively and offensively lacklustre Chelsea 2-0. At this point, the redemption arc for Graham Potter at Chelsea is going to be quite epic if it does come…
We talk for a bit about quite how drastic the collapse in standards at Liverpool has been, and Jon gets very excited about Javi Gracia’s first game, and victory; as Leeds United manager.
Plus, we briefly look at how Paris St Germain will probably win Ligue Un again but probably not the Champions League.
And, even more briefly, we cast our eyes over the last 16 draw for the Europa League, Europe’s second most major, or minor; cup competition.
This episode of the Tifo football podcast is presented by Michael Bailey and produced by Steve Hankey.

United fans aren't over the moon because it's a league cup, we're over the moon because ETH won silverware in his first season whilst: - having a 72% win rate in all competitions - being 6 points behind City with a game in hand - having just beaten Barcelona over 2 legs - being on a 17 game unbeaten run at OT - getting Rashford to score 25 goals by Feb - having a clear style of play and philosophy on the pitch Imagine I'd told you all the above would be the case after Rangnicks final game last season, you would have said that was impossible. No United fan is going to claim it's a big trophy, but the reason for so much optimism is because it's a trophy alongside everything else ETH is doing. There is belief in this manager and team like there hasn't been since SAF.

JJ is spot on in his analysis of the league cup final. Jon is letting his bias creep in again. Winning any game 2-0 and restricting your opponent to 2 shots on target - I think anyone in their right mind would acknowledge that as a dominant tactical performance. Especially given that Newcastle had a week to prepare and United had 3 days max.

Because Newcastle aren't a big 6 club. it's impressive if a smaller club wins it. Less so if a big 6 club wins it. United fans were calling it a mickey mouse cup until a few weeks ago. @@benedictharrison2819 it’s the third biggest trophy in English football. It should be routine for the top clubs to be involved every year, winning it is a professional achievement rather than a massive personal one like a league or a European Cup. United have a game at the weekend, they had 1 beer and then training was 9AM the next morning, business as usual. There’s a reason it the only trophy available mid season and that’s because it’s not as prestigious. Still nice to win.

@@juwankane5150 yeh of course it's nice to win. You would much rather win it than not win it. I'm just refuting this guy's point that people are calling it a small trophy because United won it. @@benedictharrison2819 My point was that we wouldn't have this argument of the League Cup being a major trophy or not if Newcastle had won it. We'd be all congratulating Newcastle for finally winning a major trophy in 67 years. But because United won it, who of course have had way more success in the past decades, it apparently isn't a major trophy anymore? That's not how it works. But if we are downplaying here is a question. Not saying United will do this as would be extremely hard and unlikely, just something I was thinking about. Compare these seasons. Team 1 wins a domestic trebble, they were not in Europe. Team 2 Wins a domestic trebble and the Europa league. Team 3 Wins a domestic trebble and go out in the champions league at the round of 16. Do you think people would dismiss the team that won the quadroople due to it including the Europa League? As in it would be inferior to the other seasons.

United have played 4-5 games more than Newcastle in Feb month and with a lot of intensity with bigger, better teams so they had to come with a gameplan, Newcastle don't play with a lot of possession so ETH gave them possession so they looked more on the ball but United had effective possession that made them win the game. It's a stepping stone, hopefully first of many trophies under ETH and this squad never won anything,so now they have one trophy, hopefully they'll win a lot more and build winning mentality.

Utd kept Newcastle at arm's length all game pretty much - restricted them to 2 shots on target. And to say the League Cup is not a major trophy is obtuse - does he not count Pep's Man City League Cup wins? And it is a big stepping stone for ETH and THIS Utd team JJ is pretty impartial and fair, no matter who he is analysing, which makes the podcast a lot more enjoyable.

Jon, I am sorry, but that is a shocking take regarding Manchester United. Maybe he had a bad day as honestly he sounds like he cannot be arsed being there and talking about it. As someone who understands pressing really well, I am very surprised Jon didn't notice how players like Bruno, Antony, Rashford etc. were all clearly pressing far less intensely than all season. Also, Mourinho has literally made a career out of controlling games out of possession and this game shows how you can do that in the modern era and make it look far better than just parking a bus. Stats and game style aren't written on the trophy, the winner is mate. Also, his inability to recognize the trophy is ridiculous. Like JJ said, if Newcastle won it, it would be an incredible feat. United have been abysmal and more or less a joke of a club since SAF left. This MAJOR trophy along with the progression in 3 other competitions is a clear indication that United are very much on the right path.

I’m sorry but Jon’s takes in this podcast come off as purely bitter. 1. The EFL Cup is categorically a major trophy. He asks what a minor trophy is if the EFL is major whenever it’s not hard to wrap your head around that the minor trophies are ones like the Community Shield. I find it hard to believe this would’ve come up if Newcastle had won. 2. He critiques and almost laughs at people for claiming that united are “back.” No one is saying that because we’ve won the worst major trophy available to us this season, but because of what we’ve seen all season from this team and Ten Hag. Under Jose and LVG no one was saying that this was going to launch us to great things, but if you’ve followed United this season the signs are incredibly clear that Ten Hag is leading this team to great things after just half a season. Compare Ten Hag right now to Klopp, Pep or Arteta after 6 months. 3. After the game, pretty much the only sentiment from Bruno Fernandes and Ten Hag was, “this is the first one, there will be more.” Surely that shows an absolute elite mentality and desire, and this season they’ve showed the ability to back it. The fans and no one inside the club are getting ahead of themselves. 4. He criticises how United played in the game and says that they still aren’t at the level in terms of performance. United have played 19 games in 57 days since the World Cup, and had 2 days in training to prepare for this game (and recover from the Barca game). Newcastle had a full week to prepare for this. Newcastle never once seriously threatened United’s goal and he’s acting like United got lucky. Let’s not forget that Antony, Weghorst and Fred all missed pretty good chances as well. The only chances I can think that had me worried were the Murphy long shot at the very end, and when ASM rinsed Dalot in the first half. Of course United are going to take a back seat and let Newcastle run themselves out as they had the fresher legs. DDG, Martinez, Varane and Casemiro is such a strong spine that it allows United to just shut up games, and it’s exactly what they did. No one is saying that United will win a title playing like this, but once again, I don’t think Pep or Klopps’s teams were playing half as good as this United squad after 6 months. 5. Finally, didn’t this guy also criticise Casemiro and say he was over rated a few weeks ago? His hatred for United is so obvious in recent episodes and it’s absolutely glorious from a United fan’s perspective. However, it is damaging the podcast when a man who works on a channel that analyses the dynamics and tactics of football matches can’t see that United were always comfortable in the game.

Jon's idealistic and very obviously biased analysis of United on a weekly basis is becoming a bit annoying. We played THREE GAMES in 8 days, newcastle had those days to prep for the final. We also played a game every 2.5 days on average for the whole of february (the most in the league), newcastle's best player had a couple of weeks off, and we TOOK OUR CHANCES. How are you paid for opinions on football but all your thoughts are generated through books? How do you NOT look at real-life circumstances and how they can have a huge impact on players? Starting to feel Jon is becoming too over critical of Manchester United. The team have played too many games this month including one against the best team in Spain this season. It makes sense to take a conservative approach like Man Utd did against a relatively fresh and energy intensive Newcastle United. Besides, he should not forget that Manchester United don’t have the best technical midfielders yet, so you can’t control every game. It was a tactical masterclass from Erik Ten Hag.

Yes, it's a major trophy. Of the major trophies, it isn't the most prestigious; but it's still a major trophy. The best teams compete for it; so it is a trophy at the highest level. A minor trophy would be the championship and lower leagues; or the FA and EFL Trophies, etc. Or indeed the Europa Conference League. The Europa League is probably more in the middle; just because, generally, the very best teams aren't competing for it; but it is still a significant trophy itself.
@gm2407

I don't think lower league trophies are minor, they are obviously lesser than PL, but they are more major than u23 and u18 trophies as they are first team trophies. I would say a manager who won a few lower league titles has done well in the game and got the most out of their teams, probably deserving at a shot on a PL team.

Remember how he played down Casemiro who ends up being player off the match in yet another final in less than a year? Even a non-united fan can agree this guy has a bias. And most of that team just played BARCELONA 3 days earlier, a Barca team that lost on the weekend, some might say due to they massive energy expended on Thursday. Easy explanation for the drop in quality on the ball.

It's precisely in games where teams play better than us in certain periods that players like Case shine. Look at table topping Barcelona as yet another example when united played them and he was crucial in thise two games. Been watching the podcast for as long as it’s been a thing, but I’m starting to skip episodes now due to Jon’s blatantly biased United takes. I’m not looking for glowing gushing praise, I just want informative, objective analysis which is factual to the game and the situation around it, but done in a fun way, like JJ and formerly Alex used to do. He’s increasingly letting bias and bitterness get in the way of that, it’s like we watched two different games. I get nobody is truly unbiased, but it’s the job of an analyst to not let that creep into your work. He seems to completely omit the fact that we’d played 3 games in 7 days too, including one against Barcelona, so we couldn’t play a high-pressing, ball-dominant system in this final. Despite that, we controlled the game without the ball instead, and made Newcastle go down all the channels we wanted. You’d think he’d know possession ≠ dominance working for a football analysis channel, the game is won in the boxes and we did our work professionally in both. At no point did we look particularly in danger or on the ropes. I like Tifo for being objective and having great analysis, so this weird bias Jon has feels jarring, and it’s now starting to affect his talking points. Thank God JJ is there to check him and provide genuine analysis, or it’d be completely unwatchable. It’s so weird because I thought Jon started out brilliantly, but now just seems increasingly salty and it’s raining on the fun of the podcast. Missing Alex more and more these days.

Both J.J and John are right Utd have a long way to go but I'd agree with J. J's analysis and explanation of his view about the EFL final.
