Install OSB on Shop Walls & Recycled Pallet Look - Workshop Build Series

How to install custom finish OSB panels on the walls of a workshop. In this episode I apply a decorative treatment to the OSB panels to enhance the depth appearance of the wood chips. Oriented Strand Board is a common wall material for woodworking and other shops or garages. It can be primed and painted or, in this case, I apply a dark paint to the OSB then sand it off when dry. Then I apply two coats of oil-based polyurethane. I also simulate the look of a recycled pallet wood wall by staining 1x8 cedar boards in 5 dark colors and nailing them to an accent wall in the shop. This is part 4 of my workshop renovation series.

It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s kzfaq.infoUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

I guess my opinion is not going to be a popular one. I think the OSB looks hideous. I’m not trying to be mean but you asked for honest opinions and so I’m giving you that. I also believe if you wanted to look of old pallets perhaps you should have used old pallets? And saved those pricey hard to come by cedar boards for a nicer project. Again just my opinion if you’re happy with it, then I’m thrilled for you! Lol enjoy your new space.

That is going to be a very nice looking shop. Believe me when I say you cannot have enough outlets or a small enough power panel for a shop. You may only use half of them but it is nice to have one where you need it when you need it. Like the plank wall and the OSB treatment. Thank you for sharing. Take care, stay well and have a great week ahead.

I found this post after independently starting to play with OSB in my own shop space. I found that sanding the OSB with 80 grit sandpaper using a pad sander and then using Rit Dye I could get a colored wall that showed the texture of the OSB. Now, I'm considering painting the OSB black first, sanding the black off, and then using Rit Dye for the color. All of this followed by a polyurethane overcoat. I plan on installing a French cleat system with a clear finish over birch plywood, enjoying the contrast between the light colored French cleats and the colored wall.

That's a great look, and I thought I over handled my shop walls. I was finishing the basement and needed to re-clad the back porch with Trex. The porch boards were cedar. So I pulled them off, re-sawed them on table saw and band saw, and then ran through planer. Then I burned them. (Shou-sugi-ban) They ended up being only about 3/8 thick, so I added a layer of 3/8 plywood first. After the burned boards were installed, I went over them with blue and white water based stain. The look is old siding or fence by the ocean.

I have been debating on what to do with my garage walls for months now. What you did with the OSB was awesome. And my wife totally liked it as well. So thanks for allowing me the pleasure to experince your build with you and learn a lot in the process. Feom the OSB staining to cuting and notching with something other than a jigsaw.

I have seen a few shops with OSB walls, and they always looked tacky and cheap, but I really love how yours turned out. The black paint and sanding really made the random pattern pop. The ceder wall also looked great as well with the random colors of stain used. As a more affordable alternative to having a mill cut these boards for you, ceder fence pickets could also work nicely. This design will definitely be getting used in my shop.

It’s a very durable finish material but it’s very dark. A small space like this with drywall in a light color or even painting the wood a light color would bright it up and make it seem larger

It is so good to see a post from you. I am sure that I am not alone in wondering how you are doing during these troubled times😀 I watched the whole video! On the wall you just covered , will make securing shelves and cabinets a breeze. Speaking only for myself, I have missed seeing your videos, but sometimes things out side of KZfaq have to be done. I am still trying to get started on the concrete raised beds. Because the soil around here is a very fine clay loam that is very hard to work. My plan is to male the raised beds two steps high. But we will see just how many of the pieces get cast! Our shop walls and ceiling are covered with 8" wide ship-lap that is only finished on one side so it is a bit thicker than what is available today. Again I and I am sure many others are very glad to see you posting again.Stay safe and be well.

Wood is crazy expensive right now. I watch the commodity prices to see what the trend is. And then it takes a while for prices to be reflected at the retail level. They go up fast, and come down slow.
@dontfit6380

LOL I finished the inside of my shop with 7/16 OSB at $7.98 a 4x8 sheet 6 years ago. I thought that was to expensive. You built your house at $21 a sheet so other lumber must have been high. What happens when lumber gets back to normal prices? Will your house be worth less then you owe?
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid 2 жыл бұрын
@@dontfit6380 It's a small house and we didn't go into debt to build it. I'm just saying I'm glad we bought in December and didn't have to pay $53 a sheet for it. I doubt the price will go down to $21 anytime soon or maybe ever. Most of last year it was over $40 a sheet.
@dontfit6380
@dontfit6380 2 жыл бұрын
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid no debt 👍 excellent! I see million dollar homes going up around me. I can’t believe they would build at these prices. The price will go down. It originally went up because of the crap government pulled with covid. Now more government BS causing the price of oil to skyrocket. The log yards are full waiting to be processed. People are finally getting tired of Covid and are headed back to work. Once production is back to where it should be the price should drop. If we could get government out of the way lumber prices would quickly return.

Quick tip, you can spray paint the heads of your nails while they are still in the box. Then flip them over and spray the opposite heads. Then you don’t have to touch them up after they’re in the boards one at a time.

FYI Varathane has a 3 layer in 1 coat polyurethane in either matte, gloss or semi gloss that is very durable & thick while keeping true to the natural wood tone and with several coats should be comparable to the Varathane oil base👍🏼 Very unique and glad you did something outside of the box! Love your work, looking forward to workbenches, mitre stations and my favorite… outdoor builds like your stunning potting bench and pergolas. Thank you for using the correct term 'Cure' instead of 'Dry' for your finish. I am rather pedantic about the usage of those terms, which describe entirely different processes, which potentially could lead to very bad outcomes (for example, do you want your freshly poured concrete to dry, or to cure?). And speaking of language, at around 14:55 you nicely thanked your viewers by saying "bless your heart". This has multiple meanings, and in the southern US is often used as an insult, or left-handed compliment. Of course I know that isn't what you meant, but I still found it funny. As a brit I once worked with used to say, "separated by a common language". Thanks for your content! You do fantastic work.
