This is a portion of Interviews that were recorded in September 1966 in Navasota Texas by Michael Birnbaum. Most of these photographs were taken by Eddie Iwaki who accompanied Birnbaum to Navasota. Birnbaum contributed about 15 hours of recordings to Prof. Wilgus at UCLA in 1966 and they have now become part of the collection in the Ethnomusicology Library at UCLA.

This man is beautiful. His vocal tone, speaking and singing. Listening to him speak he is so present. So smart and he taught himself it all. God blessed Mance Lipscomb. He is a beautiful man. RIP.

Mance I truly believe, was a messenger of the good Lord. He wanted to bring peace through music. He is still a treasure. I would have given a year of my life to go in a time machine back to Navasota, Texas in 1967 to meet Mance at his home and spend a day with him.

This is a treasure piece. I remember hearing about this guy around town when I was very young. I grew up 70 miles from Navasota, Texas.

This is absolutely beautiful. Mance Libscombe sounds like a Delta version of Saint Thomas Aquinas. I always knew that Lipscombe was an amazing guitar player; I had no idea that he was so wise.

"...even play the guitar but still have a Christian heart". At a time when many elders told the younger people they had to choose between blues and religion here is a man who knew his own mind. A true man, the real deal. "You can't be mean to people", there it is. Not what kind of music you play but if you are kind.

Can you imagine how intelligent this man was. He didn't have schools or anything everything he knows he had to teach himself. What if some on would have taught him some theory when he was a kid.
