Many white working-class men are struggling in today’s society - low education, poor jobs, high crime.
Filmmaker Dan Murdoch spends a year on the fringes of Manchester in some of Britain's most deprived estates. He finds anger, resentment and frustration. But he also finds a spirit of camaraderie among the estates that are fighting to stay above water - fighting not to be forgotten.
Jordan goes missing and Jack is close to losing his place in the hostel.
Britain's Forgotten Men is an ongoing series. The first four parts will be released daily.

I was homeless in Manchester for 5 yrs it became a way of life in 2000 when the commonwealth games came they locked everyone one the streets up for begging Weather or not you were...I did around 3mnths in strange ways got out left Manchester. ..but the life I lead for the past 5 yrs was all I knew I was a drug hadict and it took until around 2008 to recover then in 2010 my mum died and I could see I I didn't do something I'd be back on the street is I moved to where I live now ...on arrival I stayed at a shelter st a church where I'd dream of a different life...I meet a woman from one of the other churches who helped out at the shelter and after making positive steps forward with her help kicked the drugs and street life for good we were married soon after ...me for one didn't think I'd ever be married or even go to church but I did it had a positive affect on me and when life did let me down as it dose it wasn't as bad as it was when I was on the street...we even got a little girl who's now 9 and adores me I didn't think anyone could ever love me but they do...I'm proud of myself and what it took to get me here..mill never forget Manchester cos the people who gave were good honest people and those that past by mostly were just imbarrised...and a few nasty ones...I'm my town I never pass a begged without having 5 minutes for them. They know I'm in the same boat as them but I'm married now and have responsibility. ..I know people who are willing to help homeless so I put them into check with them....just my bit to help out...it's still hard for me to get work so I go around the skips and find stuff to sell to help with food and stuff at home...every beggar knows me knows they can calling for a meal and a shower at mine...I try engage them with church for those who have gone to church it's helped them out and they no longer homeless. ...and some just go for a free meal and go there way. .they still homeless....but it don't mean I can't help then next time and the time after no one knows like me how many chances a man might need before he feels he can live life without comdemnation for the way we live...great short film...1995-2000 Manchester was a different place....

The whole situation really is heartbreaking. My husband and I bought a house (we both had good paying jobs,) had a baby, and within a year of going back to my job I was laid off. That same year I got super sick and was in the hospital 4 times. The last time I was in intensive care for almost 2 weeks. Each of those 4 hospital stays cost us thousands and we have good insurance! We almost lost everything. Eventually we realized that we needed to file for bankruptcy. It's been 5 years now and we're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, at least financially. During this time of being sick I also sank into a deep clinical depression with the added bonuses of anxiety and panic disorder, just to make sure I could barely function. It's been really difficult, but l have my husband and we have family that has helped. We are very fortunate in that respect. I hope and pray that a solution is reached and that people can live indoors. Be treated like people, not a problem. Best of luck to all of the people featured in this series.

Tinted Media I think the people who have to do a job they hate to support their family are the real fools, don’t you? And what type of life does a minimum wage really offer? Its quite hard to get up every day to go to a job if you have no future or end goals. You don’t need to have sympathy for someone to acknowledge their struggles, it’s a blessing to not understand the mind state these people are in but you don’t need to discredit it. This could happen to you.

I used to do warehouse recruiting for Next, no qualifications necessary, just basic reading and writing and the will to work. The hardest age group to set on and keep on we’re the under 25’s. They would rather hang around street corners with their mates drawing benefits than earn a decent income, mainly peer pressure worked against them, but the sheer waste of talent always saddened me. We need proper work experience training with qualifications, not some waste of time government initiatives.

I have very little sympathy for Jack. I hate my job but I keep working because I have to keep a roof over my head. He's got the support of his mum, friends and other family to rely on to spend the night. He just doesn't want to work- just like the wannabe gangsters dossing around on the street at night. They can blame everyone they want for their situation, but they put no effort into making progress in their lives. With apprenticeships and weekend jobs, they could be gaining valuable experience to better their lives and get out of their environment but they'd rather just do nothing but lark around at night with stolen tools.

Been homeless twice- was lucky to get a women’s shelter for a bit second time was lucky my mum turned her life upside down to let me stay with her- I give homeless women any feminine products in my bag when I’m out and about, I’ll buy like an extra burger or sandwiches to give whoever and I will always sit down and share my cigarettes chat and any change I have I give them- some of the nicest, empathetic and caring, genuine people I’ve met have 99% come from street life of some significant degree... we understand loyalty and honour even if we don’t physically look it cause we know what’s important... then again, dikheads in every group of people you find.

I'm not better than them, but I'm not asking for spare change which according to this series few people have.

The sarcasm is strong, in this one LMAO. Bang on though. You don't need brains and or a qualification to hod some bricks and mortar around for eight or nine hours. It's an issue that starts in the brain. The weak brain and then makes the body weak. The men and boys of England that went to war had twice the stones that these men have. The title of this is absolutely ironic. The forgotten Wimps of Britain is more like it

The issue obviously is the lack of life skills and bad environment. It is a problem in the UK that young men aren't valued, I say this as an immigrant. You can tell because nobody has thought these blokes how to be adults let alone men. They need to be taught personal responsibility because they aren't taking any.

Actually that's not true. My son's dad recently became homeless. Him and my son's godfather due to their bank account being hacked and wiping out thousands of pounds. While all this was happening I have offered them to come stay here rent free. And also feed them. I've put money into a friends account for them to draw out. He's my son's dad and so my son needs his dad alive. Plus I have empathy as I've been on the streets and it's not nice or easy. So not all females are out for themselves.

Unfortunately a large proportion of homeless people are living with mental health or addiction issues. Two major area's successive governments have failed to address. It's very easy for others to judge however, when you work with these individuals you get a better understanding of what it's truely like to be without hope.

These people are probably mainly homeless through no fault of their own. When you leave somewhere like a hostel or bedsit you are (as the council say) making yourself intentionally homeless. I’ve handed my notice in from this supported housing place in Cornwall and have a month plus a week for me, social worker et cetera to find me somewhere to live. I can afford 450pcm and can get a flat for this money BUT I need a guarantor who can cover my rent if, for some really odd reason, my housing benefit stops - my parents have said if it comes to it I can stay with them as a temporary arrangement. Thank God I still have my parents on my side- lots of people I’ve come across who are homeless have came out of prison but they get no help when they get released. No CPN, no social worker / no. Nothing. This is why the same people get another sentence shut three months after coming out - no support and no where to live. It should be the local council who have the job of housing these Homeless lads and lasses. You are liable to get spat at, called a junkie prick, get punched in the face and even get knife attacked. I feel really sorry for these lads who’s only possessions are those they carry around with them - in a backpack. Peace all
