Extended Highlights of the First Division match at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Wolves on 8th January 1972.
The 1971-72 season was the first full season that the formidable partnership of Derek Dougan and John Richards were paired together and they responded with 40 league and cup goals between them. They were supported magnificently by the Wolves midfield; the inspirational leadership of Mike Bailey, the creativity of Dave Wagstaffe and Kenny Hibbitt together with the impressive goalscoring of Jim McCalliog, who ended the season with a total of 15 league and cup goals.
Wolves entered the match at Old Trafford on an impressive ten game unbeaten run, including notable victories at Molineux against eventual champions Derby County and an excellent 5-1 defeat of Arsenal. In their previous match, Wolves had defeated Newcastle United 2-0 at Molineux to leave McGarry's team in 6th position in the league, 6 points behind leaders Manchester United.
Included in United's team against Wolves were five players (Alex Stepney, Tony Dunne, David Sadler, Brian Kidd and Bobby Charlton) who had been part of Matt Busby's side that had defeated Benfica in the European Cup Final in 1968. A sixth, boyhood Wolves fan George Best, had been dropped by manager Frank O'Farrell after missing training in the preceding week. Best subsequently flew to London and spent a much-publicised weekend with the then-current Miss Great Britain Carolyn Moore. Upon his return days later, Best was fined two weeks wages. Despite his ongoing disciplinary indiscretions though, the supremely gifted Northern Irishman would still prove to be United's top scorer that season with 26 league and cup goals.
United had, at one stage, led the First Division by 10 points, but prior to their match against Wolves United's lead had been reduced to just 2 points ahead of Leeds United and Manchester City. In front of 46,781 at Old Trafford, a superb Wolves display increased the misery for O'Farrell's rapidly declining team...

Grew up with this team, Probably the best wolves team in 60 years, balanced, skillfull Never letting a ball go without a challenge, Very pacy, Richards can you believe only got one cap for England, what a joke. And Wagstaffe superb, Parkin allways a skillful tough player, And the maestro... The doog........ I'd forgotten just how quick he could be, And when he scored, No touchline dancing, or bows and arrows An arm in the air to acknowledge the applause, great great player... What a team.

Never saw these matches on TV, but lived in north west since I was 12, and had to put up with utd, city, liverpool and everton fans most of my life. Hardly ever saw Wolves win up here, but this match was special and one I was up in the Stretford and to witness. These were the Wolves of my time in following them to matches, and the team hardly changed over 10 years or so. Never realised the bad times to come, but now in 2020 the team is back to it's best. George was at his peerless best in 1971, but in 1972 he suddenly went downhill (dropped here for example!) and of course he was never ever the same again.

The Doog, still playing despite his age. Great off & on the field, surprised that Man U were top Div 1 as they were past their best & no Best either but he had given up.

Best worked his last miracles for United and scored seventeen goals in the first half of the 1971-72 season but United were the least fit team in the division and O'Farrell's ploy of playing Kidd and Gowling in midfield turned to sh*t in mid-winter. The old passengers weren't going to be of any help and so Best did his first vanishing act.

Stacey's Thoughts: How on earth were Man Utd top of the league at this point? Law was clearly well over the hill, Gowling was a decent player on his day, but was playing for Huddersfield in the old Third Division not long after this, Edwards couldn't react quickly enough or pass the ball effectively, and players like Burns and Sartori weren't exactly world beaters! Edwards actually did a decent job for my club, Oldham Athletic, a bit later. He made his debut as a loan player in September 1972 and scored four goals in his first six games! He signed permanently for us in March '73. You can see here that the decline had set in at Old Trafford, as symbolized by the empty terracing at the Stretford End. They were relegated a couple of years after this.

once upon a time the wolves where blood thirsty at that time i saw them in black and white tv.I WAS 14 when i fall in love with the golden and black shirts Though i t looked gray in the tv in Israel. Now, unfortunately they look more like kittens then the hungry wolves. Now 44 years im still waiting for players like Richards,hibbitt,Dougan,Wagstaffe,Parkin,Monroe etc. Now, theres big money in football but those times are lost forever with my childhood.

@@vincentfield9562 i'm a Celtic fan and i've liked the old golds as i call Wolves since those days of the early 70s Nuno is an excellent coach and Molineux is an great stadium looking at the future design of the stadium it's going to look great once its finished with a capacity of 53,000

Of course, there was the bull in the 90s but the spirit is lost.
