One of the more common methods to convert images for laser engraving is to use PhotoGrav, however, the Corel Suite of software is very powerful, and capable of great results as well. In this video I will show how to convert a photo to be laser ready.

How would you do a dark subject? that is my issue. I am trying to do a Black Lab and having a heck of a time getting something I can engrave. I am using a jtech laser and LightBurn. Thanks.

Sir, regards. I having a problem with rd works and pictures. When I design in Corel draw everything looks good. Then as soon as I import the dxf into rd works the picture looks pixelated and comes out terrible. I have used the same method with another Chinese software Lasercut on another machine for years with no problems ( that machine is broken). Can you help me here? I am willing to send you the pics of the Corel file and the rdworks file when imported. Thank you

The white is basically non-lasered space.

mandalaroseworks that can be tricky I guess. Not sure how that would look. Maybe I should give it a gray color before engraving. I will be putting it on a powder coated cup. Thanks!

What was the DPI of the original image? Another thing that people are finding out is that the dot size of a single lens will never be below about 0.18 no matter how hard you try and with a compound lens system (on a CO2 laser) can get you .05mm but is so faint it is impractical so 0.1mm, on a compound lens, is as low as you can really go so what I am trying to figure out, as is Russ Sadler here on KZfaq, is how are these machines able to do it or is it trickery? Your 0.07 interval is far far less than even any single lens can do and what is sad is that no matter how small of a lens the dot size stays about the same from the finding of Russ. Seriously trying to understand how Epilog, Trotec, Thunderlaser, etc... can flippantly just pop in 1000dpi when a real 1000dpi would demand a dot size of 0.0254mm which no way and no how can be achieved on a C02 laser system.

I typically go for about 350 dpi, but it is never exact. I certainly don't go for 1000dpi, never have. When I do photos, I get good results from 250-350dpi.

See, this is what we are not understanding because 254dpi means a .1mm dot size and no single lens can give that for a CO2 laser system. The very best might be .17 or .18mm dot size which means a maximum dpi of about 150. What this tells me is a lot of over burning is happening for any dpi greater than that unless the machine is set up with a compound lens system.

Sorry for the late response. I'm not trying to sound crass here, so bear with me. My suggestion is to quit worrying about the math. The lower interval allows a bit of a step-over which winds up cleaning up the engraving. If you are doing a photo or a really detailed engraving, it makes a HUGE difference. The best thing would be for you to do some experiments and see the results for yourself.

I believe you can, but am not sure. I use only CO2 lasers right now.

@@mandalaroseworks For now i don't use corel draw and it takes ages to engrave an picture. Is ok if i buy Corel Draw x4, or better Corel draw x8. I want to use it only for convert pictures. Thanks for helping

2 ways, get a fiber laser, or get some cermark or other similar "laser" paint, then hit it with the co2 laser. A co2 laser will not engrave into metals.

I don't know. I have never used benbox. These videos are about Corel Draw and RD Works as those are the software applications I have with my laser.

Just watch where I click the mouse. There is an icon on the screen once you install the macro into corel draw. You will have to follow the instructions from your manufacturer on how to install the plugin.

It's the same way as in this video. You would likely wind up doing an image of the dog, then cutting out the outline. It would be 2 operations on a laser, the first is the photo engraving, the 2nd would be cutting out of the outline of the dog.
