This is a review of the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 - the 055 Series' carbon fibre 4 section tripod.
It's light, versatile and small enough to be put in carry on cabin luggage on a plane. So should this be the tripod you invest in? Currently you can pick this up for as low as £250 which is a bargain. Check out my review to find out more.
You can find the carbon fibre version of this tripod here: amzn.to/2RRKEi2
There is also a 3 section version which is a little lighter but has a longer minimum height: amzn.to/2tNOmkZ
And the aluminium version is also worth considering: amzn.to/2RYYzCO
This is the MHXPRO-BHQ2 Ball Head I use: amzn.to/3aOK6SN
What's your favourite tripod? Let us know in the comments below!

Thank you for making this great rundown video! I found an online deal for a used version of this tripod along with the XPRO 3 head for $425, which I think is reasonably good value. I've never owned a tripod anywhere near this price bracket before so my expectations are rather high.

Many thanks for the comprehensive review but please advise the difference between the 055 and the 190 Series, concerning maximum height, maximum working load of camera gear and stability. Best Regards.

My use case for the arm connector thingy is to hold up a monitor or an ipad so I can check focus and frame my shots better. It's actually quite handy.
@HamerReviews

Yep, the arm is, I’ve since got a light stand with right angle arm and that works well for monitors

Thanks very much for the video. I am looking hard for a tripod suitable for landscape work and don’t want to buy Chinese. Manfrotto tripods are therefore very much in the frame and I’m trying to decide between this one, the CXPRO3 and the 190s - all carbon fibre. Your video has helped me on the journey.

Very helpful review, thanks Hamer. This tripod is being sold at a big discount by Wex so an ideal time to buy. I have a Nikon 200-500 lens and from the reviews I've read the Manfrotto 055 is up to the job.

Glad you found the review useful, I got mine discounted at Wex last year, they have some great deals occasionally! I use mine with a 70-200 2.8 and 200-500 5.6 as well, it’d very much up to the job!

@@HamerReviews I was considering the MT190CXPRO3 with 3 legs. 7Kg weight limit. It's 0.5Kg lighter but I'm wondering if it will be strong enough for a D7100 + 200-500 f5.6. Possibility of adding a gimbal head in the future too. Safer with the 055 I think. Would you agree?
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews 4 жыл бұрын
It might well be strong enough - but my issue is that it doesn’t go high enough

Hamer Reviews It’s 160 compared to the 170 of the 055. That’s 4” in old money and given I’m 6’ 5” I now think the 055 is the right one. Thanks! That’s why I like to chew things over before buying.
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews 4 жыл бұрын
You’d definitely want the 055, I bought a 190 for use as a static video tripod, it was too short so bought another couple of 055’s instead

Thanks for the review. Is there a way to lower the tripod without the center column hitting the ground? (And without raising the center column)
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the legs actually clip outward but you’d need to move the centre column to the 90 degree position if you want it super low

It's a great piece of kit, if you don't need it to be quite as small when collapsed I'd get the MT 055 CXPRO3 as it's more stable due to the thicker bottom leg sections. Thanks very much for your comment!

Which would you recommend for general purpose, this of the 190 version?
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly this one, not necessarily in carbon if you don’t need the lightweight but I much prefer the 055 series to the 190

Got mine on sale at B&H for $230 (carbon fiber version) but when I got it, the center column exploded when I raised it for the first time, and I had to get a replacement. But now that I've heard the same thing from others who've owned it, I'm not sure I trust it enough to take as my only tripod when I'm traveling. So unfortunately I think this is a tripod that will remain in my studio only.

That’s interesting, I hadn’t heard that before. I’ve got to say it’s not an issue I’ve encountered and mine has had a fair bit of abuse since getting it. Good to know though!

I don't trust Manfrotto...the centre column disintegrated on me about 15 years ago when my Nikon D3X was attached, Luckily I had the camera strap around my neck....Manfrotto replaced it with a cheaper tripod which I also had problems with...never again....

This doesn't have a hook in the bottom/middle part of tripod where you can hang a bag or something, right?

@@naturallybob not really, not sure if I’m describing it well, but it’s near the mechanism to tighten the Center column so pretty central. In the rare occasions I’ve used it I’ve tied my camera bag to it with a carabiner and a short piece of thin rope 🙂

Just ordered the 4 section over the 3 section since I saved $120 and got it for only $320 after tax. I'm slightly worried that it won't be stable enough for astrophotography, though.

Does your center column have any scratching or grooving on it? My Mt190cxpro4 ended up getting a small groove in the center column where the knob plate grips the column, and it developed scratching where it went up and down. How is yours doing in regards to the center column?
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews Жыл бұрын
Yep definitely does but doesn't affect the use.
@pizzafroth1521
@pizzafroth1521 Жыл бұрын
So it's a design flaw. When you tighten it, the mechanism creates a notch in the center column. And the metal collar grinds against the carbon fiber and scratches it when you raise and lower the center/horizontal column. It shouldn't do that.
@HamerReviews
@HamerReviews Жыл бұрын
Honestly don’t see it as a major issue, many of the carbon tripods I’ve used have has the same thing happen to them, and in fact some of the aluminium ones too.
