Boy's Abyss is just SO over the top and never goes anywhere

Imagine starting Cipher Academy thinking you're gonna get an interesting mystery/investigation manga but end up getting nothing more than word salads

[To your eternity spoilers] I’m glad there are others that feel the same way about this series! I wanted to drop to your eternity when the “ghosts” were brought up and then heavily considered it again when the characters came back, but when the romance aspects started getting hinted at in part 2 I knew there was no saving it for me. I choose to believe it ended at the first part.

You really need to return to Gintama at some point. Things like the Yoshiwara in Flames Arc is not even tipping the peak Gintama as of now. The pacing later on is gonna be a bit better than before, specifically around after the Red Spider Arc I think. The comedy also stopped being to relied on referential humor (though there are still a lot of it). I mean there are literally arcs like where Gintoki slept with everyone and has to take responsibilty for it, Yorozuya has to go inside Tama, and soul swapped cast has to fight the literal hellspawn cat who that has fallen in love with Otae. About the ending, I would probably argue that how Gintoki acted made sense in context of the story at that point and it was important in having such an emotional climax of an ending.

The thing that bothered me the most about shonen abyss was the protagonists best friend, like that mf legit has the adquisitive power and the spirit to fix himself and help his friend.....but actively chooses not to and instead he commits murder and dresses like a girl to try and fuck him wtf. It's like everyone is in a competition about checking every possible choice they can take, and actively pick the one with the worst odds possible.

the current arc of To Your Eternity is too futuristic and confusing but i really wanna see the ending :((

I really tried to give Magical Girl Apocalypse a shot. It has some rough moments, but I completely checked out after the first major twist and it does not get better from there.

Had to put my read of To Your Eternity on hold for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned. The present-day content was just... a bit off. Not helped by the fact that the scans I was able to get my hands on weren't great. I'll give it another crack someday but man did it hit a slump. Also, absolutely FANTASTIC choice of music there with the FataMoru track.

I loved gintama for the first 200-250 episodes but then when the art style changed along with the shift in tone to accommodate the "serious arcs", not to mention the drop in quality of their humor, it just became too generically shonen for me; I liked them scuffed and broke but spirited lol

Gintama is definitely my no.1 manga/anime series of all time. I have never seen a show that doesn't take itself seriously and say/do whatever it so desires. Even the people animating the show had tons of fun, I didn't even realize that there were "filler" episodes since it was so well integrated and there were a lot care that went into it. Gintama 2015 (season 4) towards the penultimate arc is, to me, PEAK shonen. And if you are considering to get into it. Just watch the anime, it definitely compliments the execution and delivery of the jokes in the manga. Now I have to mention that Gintama's humor consist of poop/peepee jokes, and relatively obscure jokes that japanese people from the early 2000's will get but I can assure you, the jokes will either make you chuckle, or laugh uncontrollably (my favourite is the toilet paper scene, that still gets me to this day) .

As a self-proclaimed oyasumi punpun fan, I'd like to say I dropped boys abyss 3 chapters in when every character they introduced came with nothing but red flags.

Kinda unrelated but did you know the aliens in Gintama are an allegory to the foreigners in Japan back when they were forced to open up their borders? I mean it's kinda obvious but I needed it to be explained to me

Boy's abyss and Tokyo revengers are the only manga that I consciously decide to drop, boys abyss goes over the top edgy, and revengers just drags on, they should have stopped when he succeeded the first time, but instead the author made the leader guy I forgot his name have some deep dark side to him

id recommend Himegoto Seifuku by the same mangaka as Boy's Abyss... for something a little more concise

You're spot on when it comes to "shounen no abyss". I liked it in the beginning but then there was just a point where i kept on reading it not for the sake of it being good instead it was more or less because i wanted to see where the shithousery would go. Things just happens and my reaction every single chapter could be summed up in a simple "WHAT!!". But for some reason i still enjoy it and i can't explain why i do, i think it's because i am a sucker for garbage dumpster fire anime/manga that makes no sense at all 😂.

Like all the adults are trying to win the Biggest Groomer of 2023 award while the main character is still depressed as fuck and his childhood bully wants him but also wants to kill him and the idol from the start of the story was just like gone??? Absolutely incomprehensible 0/10 read JJK instead

Gintama's references are fine with me personally. Most American media likes to do references and I never got any of them as a kid, but slowly over time over learned to get used to it. Thanks to fan subs too as long as I understand what the joke is about I can laugh and if not at least I'm not confused, because I know what's going on

I tried to read Boy's Abyss some months ago... yeah, i didn't make it past chapter 12 i believe. I don't have anything against somewhat dark and depressing mangas from time to time, but come on! Tone it down!

I’ve dropped Choujin X. The premise was something I’ve seen a million times before to begin with but there were no characters that I found interesting. The art was nice but man was it a slog to read just 10 chapters.
