I have a couple theories on the white film! Somewhere on Handprint, I read that some granulating pigments will turn white when you layer them. I experienced this with a handmade PR 259, Ultramarine Pink. Alternatively, this could indicate large amounts of filler or brightener. I think it happened where you went back in and layered the most pigment. I love this pigment and in my mind it kind of goes with the other pigments that you have highlighted recently. It's semi-opaque and granulating, and makes lovely mixes. I have Schmincke and M. Graham. M. Graham is very strange right out of the tube but cures up well in the palette. I'd love to try the W&N. Bruce says this about PV 16: PV16 is the most lightfast balanced purple pigment available in watercolors, and its recent addition to the DaVinci and Winsor & Newton is a welcome development. While it has an assertive and distinctive pigment personality, this becomes less conspicuous when the paint is part of a shadow mixture. It is attractive both in full strength and wash applications, but for the most characteristic color appearance it must be applied with confident, juicy brushstrokes and left to dry without fussing or retouching. It is especially good in floral painting, both as a muted floral color and to add texture and body to browns mixed with deep yellow or orange paints. The same hue can be mixed from ultramarine blue (PB29) with quinacridone rose (PV19) or quinacridone violet (PV19), depending on whether you want more saturation or darker values. In many respects, PV16 handles like thioindigo violet (PR88) and can play a similar role in landscape or botanical palettes.

@@awatercolourist Handprint is so informative!! In fact, I ended up re-reading the page "The Material Attributes of Paint" last night, and I was actually going to recommend that page to Vee! It's long (like all Handprint pages) but it doesn't get TOO sciency so that a normal person can understand it. Although this was my second time. Hehe. One of the things I learned is that all the Cobalt pigments we've looked at recently, and also the Managnese Violet, are all huge particle sizes. That means they granulate beautifully, and are also more opaque. It also lowers their tinting strength, because smaller pigment particles create higher tinting strength. But they also allow much better lifting. So that's why Managanese Violet feels similar to the Cobalt pigments; it shares those attributes.

My replies keep getting deleted!! I was just typing a reply - for the 3rd time - then I got up to switch on the AC. When I sat down again my comment was gone 👻. I can’t remember whether I submitted it or not, but the comment line was not there. Anyway, I do agree with you that Handprint is a very useful site. I was actually vacationing there over the past few days and I did read the Material Attributes of Paint page - again! It is a very useful, and veeerrry long, page. He does indeed keep the science to a minimum, or at least he makes it accessible to a wider audience. Sometimes, though, the reading does become tedious (just too long) for me. I recently found myself in a very, very obscure corner of his website that is not listed in any of his table-of-contents pages. It discusses the eye and human perception of colour. I accessed it by clicking a link in one of his other pages, but I can’t remember which one. Perhaps one of the colour mixing and colour wheel pages?

I really enjoy manganese violet and have used DaVinci. The DaVinci an incredible value for the 37mL tube. After I saw a comment from Kim Crick saying she’d had an issue with her manganese violet going bad in the tube, I used up what I had left in the tube to make custom blends in pans and then panned up the rest as just PV16 by itself. I have not had the white film with DaVinci’s version, and it granulates beautifully. My only complaint with the DaVinci PV16 is that it is VERY gummy straight from the tube. But that problem goes away when you pour it into pans, let it dry, and use it from those dried pans. I am now using Daniel Smith’s purpurite genuine, instead of manganese violet, even though the hue is a little different. I do find that the Purpurite goes down better straight out of the tube (for when I want to use it fresh) than the DaVinci PV16 did. As for transparency…check me on this, but I think PV16 is always pretty opaque (I think?). Thank you as usual for sharing your comparisons!

Just an update, DaVinci is not currently manufacturing their manganese violet because they are attempting to improve the formula. It's a difficult pigment. M Graham's version of this color literally repels your brush straight out of the tube, but is great once cured in a pan. Schmincke, I have not had an issue but I'm not sure I've tried to paint with it out of the tube much.

i feel you, the larger tubes are definitely more economical. i have some rembrandt 20 ml tubes which i absolutely love for how cheap i got them haha~ oh yeahhhhh, i actually find that most tube paints i buy here in thailand are gummy from the tube because the gum arabic separates. if i squeeze the paint into a pan, mix thoroughly, and let dry then it's fine just like how yours turned out too :) ooh i dont think i've tried purpurite. wait, i did swatch it, i'll need to go back and see. :D aww you're welcome! and thank YOU for a long comment

I have the Schmincke one and have been enjoying using it for mixing skin tones. I have heard that the paint can go bad in pans when you left it in air for too long ( the company said it's expected and sort of inevitable due to the nature of this pigment), I myself haven't had this issue, but I'm trying to use it up asap. Perhaps will purchase a tube in future.

Great comparison! I like the look of Rembrandt! Very pretty and bright. I only have this color in Roman szmal and Mai Meri blu. MMB is insanely low pigment and hard rewet, RS is like you said very much the opposite of that… but I have come to really not love Roman szmal because of that strange white cast they have

thanks marina! you're always so encouraging 🥰 rembrandt's doesn't rewet as easily as roman szmal but just as good imo. with RS, i dont think my style of painting minds the white film either. i just know some people don't like that so i mentioned it. i have a PV16 mixing vid coming up in the next couple weeks but i do like mixing it with PG7, creates nice turquoises :D

This was usefu!. I don't have any Mang Violet and looking at these, I am not wowed by any of them. The chalkiness and dullness you describe really comes through. The granulation is limited. I am thinking of trying Ultramarine Violet to get a granulating violet in the same general color space.

Easy to make lovely violets with Ultramarine and Permanent Rose, but I don't trust those mixtures to be as lightfast as good old Mineral Violet, aka Manganese Violet. This and the Cobalt Violets are indispensable for getting the delicate colors in flowers. I prefer the redder hue of the Schmincke version. I avoid all colors with honey in them, and Rembrandt just doesn't satisfy like Schmincke tends to satisfy.
