The chapter where Yuji says "stifling my misery", there some other quotes that just hit harder with the fan translation. When Sukuna takes a bite out of Angel he says, "Foolish human". The fan translation goes with "Human, through and through", which sounds much better in my opinion and conveys his general disdain for humans and their emotions. It's his way of saying, "What more should I expect from you people?"

This is honestly the perfect bite sized video to showcase issues with reading the official manga. I sent this directly to my friends to just go SEE. So many misconceptions come from the poor translations.

Much like the game “Telephone,” upon hearing the name of a technique or a usage, or even knowing the name of the technique, the user can completely change the move to a similar-sounding move that would be an entirely new technique (Ex. Changes “Cleave!” To “Did you say ‘Weave?’” And sukuna proceeds to dodge apparently some debris)

Im not gonna forget when people said john werry "cooked" when translating furnace as divine flame

I wonder if john werry translates using the chapter itself or a script he gets before hand.... Like if he has the context of the images or not when translating. There are probably people in this comment section that can answer that, but to me it just seems like the translations from him are without context you know.

I don't know whether this is one of his mistakes but I find that often chapters end mid-sentence, and then that sentence isn't finished at the start of the next chapter (one could imagine that such writing would be used to blend consecutive chapters describing the same scene together, make the next chapter start literally on the same note where the preceding one left off). Since they aren't going for thulis continuity from one chapter to the next, this could also be a rhetorical choice, leaving the rest of what would have been said to the reader because we know what would have been said. Especially in case of the „Nah, I'd win“ panel, this could work as an excuse: we all know that this mirrors the scene to which we also see a flashback there, so the text of the panel doesn't have to spell it all out. However, this should generally not be something the translator adds to a text but the choice of the original author.

You know what? Out of all the horrendous translations this man has done, the "no" instead of the iconic nah id win, I actually kinda like it

honestly the john werry tranlastions are fun to laugh at and try and figure out, it's like a puzzle for the break weeks.

To be fair his domain expansion is called malevolent shrine, and his cursed technique is called shrine, but is also used in a malevolent manner pretty frequently.

The mistranslation are something else in Animes lol (not criticizing their work, a lot are not paid or underpaid, they put a lot of work in, I respect it with all my soul). It is just funny to hear something and having subtitles saying a completly different thing, it gets me everytime 😂

7:13 Okay, I get that the fan translation is poetically sound, it establishes that scene as a very similar situation to the earlier one with Nanami and suits Higuruma's character as you said, while what he says in the official translation comes a bit out of left field, but I, for one, didn't confuse the things you say this does. Yuji's flashback is clearly that. Higuruma is not aware of that but whether he is doesn't matter because he addresses Yuji not in continuation of other speech but as they are both part of this fight. Higuruma is aware that Yuji is there, so he speaks to him as if the fight had been a silent conversation, in continuation of his own thoughts on which Yuji may pick up because he is with him in that situation: Yuji has seen Sukuna sentenced to death as well as this fight unfold. Here Higuruma says that Yuji should be the one to deal the finishing blow. The earlier panels where Higuruma reflects upon his goals and ambitions, and what Yuji has done to affect him, can be read as a sort of build-up to that. This is not as easy to grasp as Higuruma being conflicted and thus being aware he finds his end before he can finish Sukuna, which makes him do what Nanami did, but it's a sound interpretation.

There's a lot of people comparing one English translation to another and mocking Werry's (yes often poor) translation and acting like they have a clue what the original Japanese text said, when in reality you're reading a version in English that suits the english language. Yes, Werry's translations are often poor and don't fully fit the jjk story and sometimes he misses the ball completely, but his translations are often closer than you give him credit for. Japanese is structured differently to English and it assumes context in a way English often does not. Btw, it is very rare for gendered pronouns to be used in Japanese. It would be weird if Akutami used gendered pronouns for any character outside of familial relationships. It's really not an argument to say Gege hasn't confirms a characters gender because you can say the same about anyone not referred to as brother/sister/father/mother/uncle/etc.

I’m not defending Werry, BUT there are a few instances where he’s not wrong or right. Firstly: Saying Malevolent Shrine is adapting isn’t wrong, as we know that Cleave specifically scales to your opponent’s durability. But again, in that context, Mahoraga is still being talked about. Secondly: We know for a fact that Uruame’s VESSEL is a woman. That was confirmed by Gege. Other than that bro is straight up writing his side manga Sorcery Skirmishes.
