Each day water is pumped into Gloucester Docks from the nearby River Severn. Fifteen miles down the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal at Purton Bristol waterwork extracts the same amount of water. It is cleaned and pumped on down to Bristol.
The water pumped into the docks at Gloucester contains silt held in suspension. This settles to the bed of the dock and has to be removed.
Until an EU Directive in 2000 banning conventional dredging, Gloucester Docks used to remove the mud using a bucket dredger. Now the mud is simply pushed around the dock basin!
