Bead Embroidery Series #2 Easy Native Earrings with Fringe
This is part 2 of the Bead Embroidery Series where we will use what was learned in part #1 to make a cute pair of earrings.
This video is long, but it is chocked full of tips and tricks for the beginner to build up your skills. If you have never done any Bead Embroidery before, I would suggest you watch video # 1 first.

I always just listen to your tutorial. Then after a few listens and me rewinding certain parts over n over. Then I sit down and realllly watch and follow along. I find it's easier when I listen to your tutorials while I'm cleaning, cooking, driving... then I feel prepared and I feel really confident at trying your tutorials. I actually recommend doing this for beginner because that's what helped me to not get all frustrated, because I knew what was coming when I dont know how to bead.

I started doing bead embroidery about three months ago , and find it very relaxing . I do need lessons though , so thanks again for taking the time to show us ! I started training on a piece of felt (American Indian way = SO special and beautiful) and then found my own patterns in my head . I made a pillowcase (cotton base) including feathers (lots of pigeon here in the south of France) . With "few" beads , not a fully beaded piece .... It's not perfect at all but so far everybody who 's seen it likes it ...

I started with felt too. I think many of us do. The skills you learn are so transferable to many other applications. If you watch enough of my videos, you will know that being perfect is not the aim. Joy is!! There is a native beading tradition where the beader always leaves a mistake, because we are taught that the only one who is perfect is the creator. As a sign of humility before we finish a piece, if there is not a mistake we make one. Take care, Manie

If you’ve gone through the leather with your bead and need to back out, don’t take the thread off the needle, simply use your needle nose pliers and crush the bead. I know you’ll be destroying a bead but you have more. That’s one way to do it. I love your videos they are really awesome!! Thanks!

Thanks, I try to say it like it really is, not like those who show you the perfect way to create something. Last time I checked there is no perfect way, and learning how to deal with those little concerns that come up along the way is what helps a person to have less fear when creating. We can all use a little less fear.

I discovered your channel by accident and am I sure glad I did!!!! You have given me the "kick in the pants" I needed to continue bead embroidery. I use the pellon and it is a great as stiff stuff....I love it!!!! I look forward to seeing more of your bead embroidery videos.....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!

I truly wish you were still doing tutorials as I am learning to bead in the traditional way and these are easy to follow. I want to learn how to add Buffalo hide to the back and edging. I want to make medallions for 4 different people and I am so scared to start. I'm not the best at drawing so trying to figure that out also. It is hard to find traditional teachings!!!

Hi Holly, I am glad you are trying to learn the traditional ways. If you watch some of my other videos you will learn how to create edging and how to add hide to the back of a beaded piece. You might have to watch some of the non traditional beading videos to find them. I think the beaded bracelet with a center piece has how to add a backing. There is a separate video for the edging, just about edging. Practice all you can, and learn all you can and you will grow in bravery and skills. Let go of perfection and just try it. If you don't like it enough to give away, add it to a hair clip or sew it on a pencil case and just enjoy the fact that you are learning, and try again. Trust in the spirit within you to help guide you. What you learn today, someday you will teach others. Enjoy!

Hello Freeangle, All the earrings are made the same way just using different colors. The second pair has a 2 hole cab in the center rather than the first two rows. The rest is the same. I added a fringe to the edge beads. I hope this helps.

I use a dryer sheet for black Fire line, it takes it all off plus conditions the thread.

Hi Olivia, with the colors I have chosen, No. That 4 sections in a circle is similar to our medicine wheel, but the colors would be different. With all my videos I tried to teach technique, but if possible I did not make pieces that would be from a particular tribe.

Hello Best, once I worked back up the tassel I then worked the thread between the backing in the beading on the front and then up between a couple of the beads on the top. Then I worked the thread through a few beads on the top, weaving back and forth to secure. I hope this helps.

Hi may I ask you a question please and thank you I appreciate it very much. I just started watching your KZfaq channel and I want to say thank you for explaining the different types of beading embroidery stitch with the 2 needle process I use 1needle but I might try the 2 needle process. I would like to ask also will you be teaching how to make the flat rosette ? I think you said it was done in brick stitch I would love to learn how to make one. I'm a visual learner so your videos really help me. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge

Hello Bev and thank you for your kind words. The rosette you are talking about is done with square stitch in the round and it is like material with no backing when you are done. (Sorry I misspoke when I said brick stitch, although I am sure it can be done that way too.)The square stitch rosette can be sewn onto clothing or bags or anything you like. You can also create the same pattern by the method in this video. It is hard to explain, and you said you are a visual learner, so I will put this on the list of Items to make for a video. I am not sure which one I will do, but the math and count between increases will be the same. Maybe you can help me decide. Bev, Would you prefer a free form piece or one done as bead embroidery? Please let me know.

Manie Martinez. Hi if you did a free form like the one you have would be awesome! I have this crazy idea that if I could learn to make this then I could make another one and put them together and make a coin purse. I watched a lady make a circular peyote stitch coin purse but I was so confused because she doesn't show up close what you are supposed to be doing or how the beads should look like so needless to say I have a hot mess that looks like a smashed bumblebee lol I'm teaching myself to bead

Hi Bev, Sounds like a great idea. You might want to line it with something though. I think the beads would take a beating against the coins. Please post on my FB page one you have done once you make one. .... I would love to see it. Just so you know, it may be a few weeks till I get to this request on the list. I have others I have to do first. But I promise I will get to this for sure.

Can I use Fireline 6lbs Smoke? Also I couldn’t find Lacy Stiff Stuff in my local hobby lobby. Can I use a stiff pelt instead

Hello Selah, You can use fireline for the main body but you will need nymo or thread of some sort for the fringe, if you want it to hang properly. You can use any thing you want to bead on. Pelon is a cheap interfacing option you can get too in fabric stores and I have used stiff felt too. If you are going to make a bigger circle you might want to put a piece of something hard between the layers before you edge them together to give it some sturdiness if you need too.

I noticed that you switched from fireline to nymo to do the fringe. Is it because nymo is more fluid and not as stiff as fireline? Nice tutorials.

Hello Spanisheyesri, Yes you are correct fireline, wildfire are great for many things, but not for the fringe, A fringe always needs a thread. KO, Nymo, Nozu, to name just a few. Nymo comes in different thicknesses, so you will have to watch that you are not using one that is two thick. Thread will give you much better movement in the fringe.

Thank you. I have found that if you use fireline the fringe sticks out in all directions and won't lay flat.

I tried to skip back to where you mentioned the switch and I couldn't find it. :P I'm about to go to the bead shop to buy supplies for my first project and I'm trying to figure out what basic sizes of thread and needle I need. Not too worried about beads since I already have some and will buy more (and I also know the thread/needle should match the size of bead). I'd like to buy the 2 different threads for the main design and fringe. I saw someone use an embroidery hoop for their thin leather. Do you have any experience using an embroidery hoop? I'd also like to add that your videos are very good. They are in focus, you explain everything well, you go slow, and you pick a variety of projects that give a great overview of bead embroidery. Thank you!

. Hello Sarah, To answer your question: I have used an embroidery hoop for really large projects, but I can't say I have used it with leather. I would be concerned that you might mar the leather where the hoop digs in. A hoop is fine for large pieces of felt, interfacing or stiff stuff that you might bead on before backing a project or sewing it onto a garment. I am thinking large patches for the back of garments, in that case. I hope this helps.

Manie Martinez Good point. And you’d need extra leather to fit the hoop which would result in waste leather. So, I’m thinking size 11 or 12 for needles, what about thread? I want some for fringe and some for the main design. What size thread should I start with? Beads will follow.

Hello Sharika. I always list all the materials I use under the video. In this case I used a Interface and then backed it with ultra suede.

lacy stiff stuff is a brand name of stiff interfacing.. Google it and then figure out what you can use from you local sewing store. They carry stiff interfacing. Have Fun!!

Hi Lauren, It is basically interfacing that you can get at a fabric store. It just has to be stiff, thick enough to maintain its shape and and without sticky "iron on" backing. I hope that helps

I keep watching over and over trying to find out what your white fabric is I know you talked about the overstretched felt from Walmart but what are you working with now what is the white fabric your sewing the beads into now I can tap my phone anywhere I want and I cannot get your list to come up of materials I'm sorry you're good but I've been watching for 2 hours my attention span is gone

Hello Shannon. Were you brought up to treat your elders that way? If you listen to my videos, not just skim through them, you will know the answers to your questions and why it is not a medicine wheel. In my videos I teach techniques, not specific patterns, which should come from our own elders and history. Magwitch
