Manly P. Hall: How Far Can We Trust Ourselves and Others?

This previously unreleased lecture was delivered by Manly P. Hall at the Campus Theater in Los Angeles on March 9, 1958. Around this time, pop psychology was gaining popularity in the public consciousness, and much of his work in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s centered around the topic of self-help.
While this is over 60 years old, the words are just as true and relevant today, perhaps even more so. He puts emphasis on the importance of being honest with ourselves before we can expect others to be honest with us. Mr. Hall also warns against self-imposed 'victimhood' by demanding that everyone else should understand the world from exactly your point of view and opinion.

25:54 There is a old saying and I think it is true, that nearly all countries would rather be governed by a poor ruler of their own than a good ruler imposed upon them by others and most of us as individuals much prefer to live badly according to our own convictions than to live better in slavery or bondage to the convictions of another person whos attitudes appear tyrannical to us. Nature has intended that we should move toward our own center and govern ourselves by ourselves and Nature will except nothing else, that wherever this issue is avoided Nature shows displeasure by bringing upon us a number of complications. Complications intended to force the value back into our own natures.

I believe the right amount of people view these lectures if most of the population were to hear these it would make them uncomfortable and thus lead to banning the lectures. If the amount of people viewing these lectures live according to them as best as possible the world would slowly change which is the best course unfortunately because sudden change is often met with resistance

7:48 How far then should we say the individual can trust himself? He can trust himself about as far as his religion, his ethics and his philosophy can direct him. We have to realize further more that his ethics, his religion and his philosophy are essentially innate. We train them, we direct them but the individual without certain values does not seek training or direction. If therefore he is making some effort to organize his life constructively, he is doing so primarily because of constructive instincts in his own nature. Perhaps these have been strengthened by mistakes and he is ettempting to not do again that which has previously caused trouble but even this reflection arises in his own nature. If therefore we can allow the values in ourselves to have a chance, they will usually guide us more or less intelligently.

...In order to be trustworthy, we need to build a core of security within us, a solid integrate value a higher idea of ethics, something to look up. Jesus Crist is alive and responsible..Τhe person who is internally secure does not need to compromise in order to attain security. Therefore dishonesty is always related to insecurity. Dishonesty is the procedure of placing ourselves in such a situation that we invite other persons to exploit us. If we have a core of value and this value enable us to adjust to the ordinary problems of living with reasonable efficiency we are very close to being trustworthy to us and others. Opposite if we are weak, to a point of desperation, in a way that we must turn to smt whether it is right or wrong, we must do something bad or good, such emergencies nearly always destroy our basic trustworthiness. We gradually cultivate a pattern of compromise and the moment compromise takes over basic value vanishes...instead of being critical of people around us, we ' d rather take our own position strongly on some principal and some pattern. It may mean that we lose a few people from our circle, those without principals, but those exactly are the ones that are causing us problems!! Shortly we will attract people that do not have need of smt because they have principals of their own. One of our difficulties is one of our weakness, takes the form of desperate desires to be needed. And under all these desperate moods we get in the same troubles. There is no need for having a desperate desire to be needed because we are needed. Most of the persons that have the desire will not go out and do necessary things that immediately require doing. They want to move this need onto a psychological level and having cattle by someone. We are all necessary, therefore we do not need to compromise our integrity in order to try to ingratiate ourselves into some kind of a situation. There is work for everyone, not always with economically productive it may be tremendously valuable of building a character and the satisfaction of our internal living !!Try not to be critical how honest the other is rather to evaluate how honest you are, and have been in your life.!

I don't agree with everything Manly teaches but you never throw the baby out with the bath water. Take the good and leave the bad. Manly speaks very plainly so the simply man can understand and implement his teachings. If a Person speaks so eloquently, loftily, scientifically that only a few can understand what good is that? Not very good.
