The Habit of Thinking Constructively: Cultivating the Positive Outlook
(a live lecture by Manly P. Hall in Los Angeles, November 25, 1956)
Download mp3 audio of this lecture here: www.manlyhallsociety.com/prod...
"In these rather complicated times, we are all in need of positive thinking, and yet the term has been so abused in the last 25 years, it seems worthwhile to devote some time trying to clarify basic values."
These words were spoken over 60 years ago but remain true to this day - perhaps even more so. If ever we needed a positive outlook and constructive thinking habits, the time is always now. Manly Hall presents a straight forward approach to the problem of the day, with practical and simple solutions for a busy person in the modern era.
* around 10 minutes, there is a Bible quote and these are the references: [Matthew 13:12; 25:29 Luke 12:48, Thomas 41]
40:45 By changing ourselves, we become an inspiration to others; whereas by trying to change others, we only become a nuisance.
1:12:33 It is not the doing of the thing, it is the getting ready to get started to begin to commence doing the thing.

0:39 when surrounded by problems and taking the attitude of "everything is alright" does not work 0:58 if we know deep inside that our "optimism" isn't grounded in something, we will lack the courage of conviction to believe our own positive affirmations 1:39 having more knowledge is like a double edged sword because it gives us an increased ability in estimating / seeing / noticing more difficulties 2:53 the foundation for our personal security / peace can be found in our emotions 3:09 people who are emotionally constructive are usually constructive on other levels too 3:18 emotions are the mainspring of our attitudes 3:23 our minds seek to justify our emotions and will rationalize / justify what we feel 4:15 positive and durable people move / operate from kindly, constructive, creative emotions

Whoa... the bit that starts 53:00 -ish minutes in (aside from joining any sort of group, blech!) is too close to home. In my defense, I'm ready to admit my guilt in this regard. I think about myself nearly 24/7 and it's almost entirely negative. Anxiety, guilt, disgust, dread, regret etcetera. Granted, my situation is pretty fucked up and I've got plenty to worry about, but I obsess over the possibility of disaster and/or embarrassment. The only things that help are reading and listening to audiobooks, rockhounding and muh cats. All of those are very solitary endeavors. But goddamnit I'm not into socializing and my line of work is taking care of an elderly brat. Ah, well. I very much appreciate and enjoy these lectures. Mr Hall is like a grandfather wizard figure. Very cool

Manly is correct @7:42 when he says quoting the Bible: For those that have, more shall be given unto him and for those who have, not more shall be taken away" Those lines are actually stating: You get what you constantly, emotionally and mentally concentrate on. If its positive more positivity results, negative-negativity results, The mind & emotions combined and aligned is key. It is possible to have positive thoughts while still feeling, worried, anxious and doubtful, so the emotions are a key component. So if you don't feel all happy and positive and certain...at least try to be mentally & emotionally calm. From sustained calmness all the other positive emotions and thoughts will come. Research Shamatha-Vipassana meditation practice.

If any person understands the words of MPH, how do they affect his life and his attitudes towards others, his patience, and tolerance for those with less understanding? I have known possibly one man whose actions and life showed that he believed in something more than this world, although he never spoke of his beliefs, and he had an easy way of showing an incorrect attitude or reaction while also allowing me to reach the same conclusion myself, and without judgment or shame. That was over 20 years ago. I'm wondering now if it was just me who didn't take offense at correction, even though everyone loved him.

Mr. Hall actually spoke more about Freemasonry in his early years before he was officially initiated. This one was after that, so I would suggest it is the philosopher talking. Sounds reversed, but after he was raised, there were 'secrets' he could no longer speak about publicly.

I've made great strides using psychedelics, especially ayahuasca. They help you unravel trauma & psychological barriers you have put up throughout life. The unraveling can be both conscious & subconscious, either way you're going to feel like a new man. They help you relax/surrender enough to blast through barriers you likely aren't even aware of. Of course they aren't for everyone, but I'd say if you enjoy dreaming then you'll love ayahuasca! It's also very easy to make yourself! While a shaman/facilitator can help you immensely I don't believe they're necessary as long as you are honest & open with yourself! In my case I couldn't cry for around a decade from 13-23yo. It felt like all my pain was converted to anger & self-centered indignation before I had a chance to face it. Now I know how to flow with life, redirect negative energy coming at me & relax into change. My mind & soul feel more at home in my body than ever before. Every facet of my intelligence has been dramatically increased, I'm the most curious person I've ever met now & I can honestly say I love myself which was I was never taught was okay/possible!! Above all else it's just very soothing once you develop a relationship with the teacher & yourself! It takes 90% of "AHHHHHHH!" out of life. Wishing you the best, especially if you decide to walk down this path. Have courage my friend. Nature rewards courage.

Who does Manly refer to when he says: "We find this an interesting subject." ?
@ManlyHallSociety
@ManlyHallSociety 3 жыл бұрын
Mr. Hall mostly spoke in 1st person plural, probably referring to the Philosophical Research Society. Unless he was giving his personal opinion or relaying biographical information about himself, he generally avoided saying "I" - most likely to avoid a cult of personality or guru status. Great question!
