I found the story fun and I liked Lizzie as a character, she wasn't overly crazy, she didn't murder people for no reason, she didn't work against herself continuously and she had more motivation than just the plot needs her to do this thing so she does it out of nowhere, which makes her more than just a stereotype. Overall I whould say it was good and I had a lot of fun watching this series.

Yeah, it feels incredibly refreshing to have the MC actually calling Lizzie out on her insane behavior. And come on, how many times do you see a visual novel where you can break out of a yandere's imprisonment but have the conscious option to stay, which gives her complete faith in the MC and they become a legit couple, leaving only some of Lizzie's minor quirks remaining. Sure, she has an infatuation with knifes and axes, but did you see what happened there??? Her target of affection was insulted by a classmate and she barely cared! Any other yandere would have butchered ANYBODY in the vicinity. All she wanted to do afterwards was proving that they weren't childish! This is why I love it when a story takes a well established trope and flips it on it's head. It makes for some of the most entertaining stories. EDIT: It's not just him calling her out, he actually takes action to try and help her, even though she had proven to be unstable and dangerous after burning down the tree over nothing more than a comment on John's part. Yet, he took blood from here, got it checked, had her take medication, all with her consent, which he actually ASKED for. I want more protagonists like this that have actual agency.
@Lazyskylight
@Lazyskylight 6 жыл бұрын
Xasther ReeD agreeable. I've seen so many troops where sometimes the MC just shrugs it off and says it probably some stupid excuse. I would be freaking and trying to help the person, instead letting it fester until the Yandere snaps and kills who are dead to the person kills a love one.
@XastherReeD
@XastherReeD 6 жыл бұрын
"the MC just shrugs it off and says it probably some stupid excuse" That is already an advanced form of the standard, dense-as-a-rock MC-kun. The version you are describing actually NOTICES something is wrong but is too stupid to understand what's happening. I actually just went onto steam and bought Crimson Gray simply to support the creator. For anybody interested, it's currently 50% off because of the summer sale.

I was actually disappointed a bit towards the end. John was so strong, continuing to be rational, fight his depression & help the girl overcome her illness too; I thought maybe they'd get better together or at least one would. But they pulled a Captain America plot and then made them Bonnie & Clyde or some crap. Heck, I even thought of a plot twist where Lizzie would get better while John got worse. She'd see he isn't perfect and just wants to manipulate her into not taking pills so she could stay this way & be with him. He'd slowly become a selfish prick bc she idolised him, and now the tables have turned as a sane Lizzie tries to stop _him_ from killing ppl by killing him herself. REVERSE YANDERE... I think I just saw them subverting tropes and got too hopeful 😂: forgot that the guy HAS to get the psycho at the end. Oh well, I'll just write about this myself.
@Danariya1

@@spaghetto9836 Kind of crazy how I got a reply to a 3 years old comment under Crimson Gray video right the day I was rewatching the series. But yeah, I totally agree, especially now that I've rewatched it years later. At the time I really liked the story because the yandere genre is just so repetitive that even the slightest changes made me love the game. I like this trope for the potential it holds, but unfortunately people don't experiment with it enough and stick to basic "a girl will kill everyone no question and the guy is a dense idiot" Also I really like you reverse yandere idea! I would've loved if this novel had dropped the conspiracy plot and went fully either way: either Lizzy turned John into a worse person or he helped her to become a better person, but a twist where they end up completely switching sides as the story progressed would've been amazing.

I just had a theory about Lizzie’s seeming super strength. IIRC, the human body is actually much stronger than it seems, but the mind puts constraints on the amount of force you can excerpt so you don’t do irreparable damage to your muscles. Its only under extreme stress that the human body really unleashes it’s true strength. This explains the stories of mothers that lift cars off their babies. It’s possible that either Lizzie was simply born without these mental constraints or she lives in a constant state of extreme stress that leaves her able to tap in the true strength of the human body. The latter also explains her fixation on knives and “functional” objects, she lives in a constant state of psychological fight or flight, so she only finds interest in objects she perceives as useful to her “survival”
@Redbird-dh7mu
@Redbird-dh7mu 6 жыл бұрын
Be N S O N this could be true, it wouldn’t be unbelievable. When some people aren’t in the right mindset, they can become much stronger because their body thinks it is in a life or death situation, nurses and doctors deal with this quite often as many people they deal with aren’t in a sane mindset at the moment and require restraining. Small people can suddenly wield the strength of multiple men as their body is doing what ever it needs to not fail.
@gusbart5856
@gusbart5856 6 жыл бұрын
Unrealistic, these restraints have a reason for existing. You could not survive a week without these restraints and even without these you could not severe heads or suddenly lift 200 kg as a average person. If muscles are torn they can not function anymore and humans hurt their muscles through less spectacular action already. The removal of this mental restraints will not glue muscles together or make fantastic things possible.
@Colddirector
@Colddirector 6 жыл бұрын
Gusbart Yes, but it's entirely possible that before meeting John, Lizzie simply never did anything that damaged her muscles *too* much. She does mention she pretends she's weak not to stand out. If she straddled that line long enough, her muscles would probably be quite strong due to the constant, yet reparable wear and tear anyway.
@gusbart5856
@gusbart5856 6 жыл бұрын
Be N S O N But her muscles are not strong, you can see her naked body in the sex Scene. The Force with which she beheaded the Soldier should have dislocated her shoulder already. This is just fantasy.

circular7 Well I think in the true ending is implied that John no longer needs the drugs, or even if he does his world has come back full color. Which I just find neat! The story is not overwhelmingly complicated nor does it want to be, so I acccept it for what it is. The part that sells it to me is the fact that Lizzie knows there's something wrong with her and she's willing to accept it cause of John. A sweet romance (even if there are some gray areas, cause it's also implied Lizzie has killed some other people even after the events) It's not an excellent game, but I liked the characters and do wish them a happy ending.

I liked the general concept of a male protagonist who's too depressed to care that his girlfriend's a murderous yandere sociopath. My biggest complaint is pretty obvious then: that the game always tries to give you the option to freak out instead of playing to the character's strengths. Probably the most important storytelling advice (also great for games, in particular roleplaying): never compromise a character's defined traits lightly. If you compromise it, make them own the compromise, eg. if your lecher's not gonna lech on someone, make sure it's a damn strong reason. If your depressed male protagonist in a yandere game's going to bitch out and run from his yandere girlfriend after putting up with her shit for so long, it better be meaningful, not just "this alternative version of me is afraid of bodies, even though that other one thinks murder is totally hot."

Ehh, I think the conspiracy was kind of half baked, and Lizzie killing all those guards really took the piss. I think this would’ve benefited with a more down to earth tone, with them dealing with their problems in a more realistic way
@circular7
@circular7 6 жыл бұрын
Be N S O N they needed to justify her high functioning sociopathic ways, but it made little sense. We never learn what happened to the mom, and the plot could have stood to have more of the other super soldier girl Abby in it. Also I would have liked it if John would have learn to grow without Lizzie's help but all the paths imply that he's completely dependant on drugs or a girl friend to feel anything.
@Colddirector
@Colddirector 6 жыл бұрын
circular7 I think they could’ve justified her but kept the circumstances largely a mystery, with Smythe a well intentioned, but largely unhelpful stooge of koi-tec. I mean at the very least keep her body count to just one guard instead of like a crowd of them. She comes off as almost a Jeff the Killer-like Mary Sue, and that isn’t great
@circular7
@circular7 6 жыл бұрын
Be N S O N nah, one guard would be one too many. Manly showed that John didn't take it well when he witnessed Lizzie killing Abby. It would have been worse if he saw her killing one guy doing his job. Better they go full jump the shark. Besides most endings lead to Lizzie or Smythe wanting each other dead which may have been the creator's will or intention.
@Colddirector
@Colddirector 6 жыл бұрын

@Colddirector
@Colddirector 6 жыл бұрын
Gelynn ‪ I suspected it would go the conspiracy route too, what I mean is that it delivers on that premise in a quite cliche and slightly unsatisfying way. It went from a somewhat down to earth story about mental illness to a borderline action movie, with Koi-Tec turning into the Umbrella Corporation. It feels like they were under a time crunch and had to wrap up the story as quick as possible. I still enjoy the ending somewhat, but it definitely didn’t keep me as engaged as the earlier bits.

The true ending reminded me a little of that "saya no uta" story where the John's happiness meant damning everyone. Because John said, "I've never seen you kill that many people before" which implied she's killed a lot, maybe making the entire Town a ghost town because they couldn't tell who was in on the conspiracy. The town was more or less made to study Lizzie and Abby anyways. They didn't mean to make super soldiers but since they accidentally made Captain American alternative, the Murkoff Corporation(Outlast series) AKA koitec had to capitalize on it.

Not sure how to feel about this game. Definitely love the less cliche take on the yandere trope; it was really, really refreshing to see the main character have his own opinions and reactions to the things his psycho girlfriend did, and his reactions actually make sense when you factor in his own mental illness. However, I was hoping to see an outcome where, like someone else commented, they deal with their problems more realistically. More than that, I don't really get or necessarily like the whole narrative of John wanting Lizzie to be herself. Yeah, okay, that's a decent message, but changing yourself for the better because you're trying to improve perceived flaws doesn't make you fake. It would've been nice to see a route where John stays with her and supports her, but encourages her to reel in the psychotic/violent tendencies. It wouldn't have had as many dramatic outcomes, sure, but the struggle still would've been interesting and the ending could still be satisfying. Then again, I'm really passionate about people being the best person they can be instead of surrendering to mental illness and just resigning to stay like that. I think that if someone is a danger to society and they don't want to do anything about it, then they should be isolated, treated with caution, or contained. It's a sad truth that the world is unfair and that some people just aren't built to be safe around others, but I think protecting the majority is more important than validating and accepting one flawed person. Overall, good game, I guess. Not very accurate as far as psychiatry goes; usually, a school counselor and personal psychologist/counselor are two separate jobs in my experience, and antidepressants don't work nearly as fast as the game makes them, but I think the real world inaccuracies are excusable since they're necessary to the story. I do think it's refreshing and good that there's a fair share of reasonable reactions from John, and that the player sort of has a choice as to whether they want him to treat Lizzie with the fear that most people would.
@M4x_P0w3r
@M4x_P0w3r 6 жыл бұрын
Well, you know, I think in cases as extreme or unorthodox as Lizzie's, you can't really heal her, you treat her. It's just something that never really goes away, so you have to deal with it and learn from it. But I think John did an overall good job of "stabilizing" her and trying to bring her back when she starts loosening herself. Once he stayed with her, she seemed much more... calm and somewhat "healthy", only going out of control when they kidnap him and attempt to use him as bait and what is basically turning him into a puppet. I think most people would be totally outraged at that revelation and would do desperate things to avert it. Accepting her with her flaws and problems instead of acting as those are an obstacle to overcome is what she really needed. She needed someone who could really love her, not one who could "change" her. I'm positive she became as unhinged as she did because she could never truly accept herself, always having to hide her true self because nobody would accept her if she didn't. When you try to ignore and hide such urges and overall who you are at all times, it just gets worse. Then again, I'm not an expert or nothing similar. Is just my opinion, maybe I'm totally wrong with my point of view. But I am one of those that, unless proven that someone is utterly irredemable and will stop at nothing to harm others for their own pleasure and ideals, give these people a chance, and Lizzie doesn't strike me as such.

I hate to say it but.... It probably would've ended up like this anyway regardless if the story is ridiculous. I know! I know! It makes no sense, but hear me out.... The guy is suffering from deep depression, right? It's no more apparent from the gray background. Nothing matters, not even his life in some of the bad ends. He just want things to be okay...and that's it. Yandere girls (albeit not very realistic) have a more parasitic desire. They take and take without restraining. Most of us would stop cause we're considerate, but not them. For Lizzie, she couldn't find a more perfect host in John. it's every yandere girl's dream. A lump of clay that can be formed if done the right way. Be it her expressing her love (or just being convincing that she was), rocking his world in a cowgirl position (no seriously, she did), or locking him in the basement for over a week, her constant pushing eventually led up to him to be the perfect boyfriend for her. I know at the beginning I wasn't for John trying to medicate her on the account of no one unstable should ever try to suggest someone who is also unstable on what's best for them, but later on she did the same thing.... and got away with it! She got to be herself AND mold him to what she desired...AND this is considered the "True" ending! Seriously, that's extremely unhealthy for a guy like John who now will have a warped sense of humanity stacked onto his depression. I personally like the "Happiness" ending since they both compromised and found somewhat of a middle ground. But there's a problem with that; John would have to have a backbone. He doesn't really, especially not for himself due to his crippling depression. Unfortunately, outside the creator having a desire to have this relationship the way he/she wanted, I'm afraid that the way the story was going, he was just going to be yet another hapless senpai whose life is controlled by another hot psycho.

Sir Grimm Locke Damn, when you put it that way, I can kind of appreciate the true ending more. It really does deviate from the typical cliche yandere ending. It's nice to see one of these types of characters use a method other than threatening and violence to get what they want, and from what you said it, it's easy to believe that Lizzie is a lot more manipulative than she lets on.
@ohno4930
@ohno4930 6 жыл бұрын
Max Power it does seem like John took a pretty good approach. Maybe I just interpreted it wrong; it kind of seemed like he just enjoyed Lizzie's sadistic tendencies in some cases or didn't think of it as an issue at all, but the treatment you're describing does sound realistic and I think you're probably right about those sort of urges getting worse the more you try to hide them.
@M4x_P0w3r

Heh, thanks. It could be that is a mixture of both our points of views: John isn't the sanest in the bunch, either, maybe he could have done things another way (though that might have led to a worse outcome). In a way, I think they are codependent, as in he needs her as much as she needs him. After working around some rough edges on both sides (arguably hers are rougher but still) I think they are pretty much a match made in heaven. I have to disagree with Locke here, the Lizzie from the beginning and the Lizzie from the ending are diferent in my opinion. The parasitic relationship is what happens in some of the bad endings, granted, but i don't quite see it in the true one. And their sense of humanity may not be what one could consider conventional, but their scenario is less than ideal. John isn't quite as affected by depression either, as he can now see the world in colors.

As goofy and over the top as it is, I appreciate the overall message of accepting people for who they are. Obviously not to the degree of accepting a psychopathic murderer (best waifu though), but... When someone's interested in me, and I talk about how I have a hard time feeling close to people, and they tell me "I hope you can change". That... makes me sad, because that's a huge part of who I am, that they've pretty much just said shouldn't exist. True acceptance is a beautiful thing.

I have heard that in ancient societies and even in some collectivist societies nowadays friendships and relationships overall were considered more covenantal in manner rather than emotional bonds. Emotions were considered fickle and forming formal covenant which at least tried to be kept intact by forces in question despite their feelings. Propably most well known system is marriage, but at least in the past even friendships were covenantal in nature with official witnesses, at least Judah and Jonathan are case examples in The Bible. In manga spectrum there are series called A Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori which tells a tale of muslim woman of wealthy family who meets poor woman in women's bath and forms friendship marriage with them (they were a thing among muslim population at least till end of 19th century). While covenantal relations are more tight in nature, it also has certain benefit of not having to depend on one's emotions and not necessarily affect the person's character. Of course in covenants there are expectations that fellow person is not that rotten to core, but once the bond is formed it is expected to last longer than casual relations. I suppose the problem nowadays is to lay expectations that simply being around people is supposed to make one feel better and rather have more official relations. I don't know. I just think trying to force bad mood away does not fix much.
@spaghetto9836
@spaghetto9836 3 жыл бұрын
Idk man. I'm not saying anything about how you feel or who you are, but for me, constant change & improvement is as stunning as true acceptance. I take a long time to form bonds too, but the idea of constantly evolving on whatever you personally find bad about yourself to be better every day, is beautiful. Like how seasons never remain the same, always fluctuating, always changing. Thus I interpreted the story differently: "When you're mentally ill, drugs are a negative thing because they change you, and you don't wanna change who you _really are_ do you??" Like, if there's something inherently wrong in you, not changing simply to stay true to yourself.. isn't the best option. Instead, accept the notion that who 'you' are changes with the flow of time, & the possibility of becoming the best that you *can* be right now. If both Lizzie & John stayed maniacal in a dependant relationship while killing ppl... but accepted each other fully, in the end it's still a bad thing. I guess I'm saying idk whether full acceptance and love are the same thing, y'know? Tbh I don't think so.

It's interesting cause for me my meds helped me a lot. Clearly the meds in this game should NOT be representative of real life as I know multiple people on meds for various reasons who have vastly positive effects from them. I myself have been doing sooo well with sertraline for depression. Two of my friends take ADHD medication and another takes antidepressants. If it's a mental illness, I'm gonna be honest sometimes you just need to treat it one way or another if it's taking over your life. Better late than never but... In some aspects I dissagre with manly about what he said the writing of the game,about the kind of Writing that the developer handling two types. I personally dont think that...thats what he was going for,it thought that the whole conspiracy plot point was handled in a way that it served as an explanation of sorts and as well of plot development Though I will admit that the whole segment with the conspiracy felt a little rushed...and the end was a jump in logic that (the scene with lizzie killing all the guards)I wished that they would have has paced the plot a bit better. The conspiracy plot had a lot of potential and it didnt delivered......but I Still found the true ending enjoyable I wished that the game would be a little longer to build more depth to this plot point. I do agree with manly that there were a lot of recycled CG, one moment (I believe around 1:35:00) Where lizzie was shot in her "date" outfit,but it showed her CG with her school uniform with blood instead,I do wish that they could make more detailed CGs While is unclear if lizzie is really a yandere,I do think she Still fall in that category,however I do think what is causing this uncertainty is that she is somehow more "reasonable" than the others,she actually considers others options instead of being so decisive So basically she is what a yandere would be if they existed in really life (Well...at least closest we ever seen so far,she isnt perfect) What it really made me invested was the relationship between John and lizzie,lizzie being more reasonable made her more likable and John actually thinking and more reasonable than other anime protags (he always considers the chance of lizzie killing people,and coming up with plans to calm her down,using her obssetion as a way to make her behave,he is not completly oblivious of the situations and so on...) In the end,I really thought crimson gray does stand out of the other visual novels,however it does have its flaws,but I thought the story engaging and fun and I hope to see more of this kind in the future...

Oml, I loved this, I usually don’t care for these types of things, but it was really good. (Probably because I have a thing for yandere based things) honestly, I’m pretty jealous, can’t find those kind of people in real life. Everyone is so bland and boring, usually the same. But someone loving me unconditionally and even to an obsessive level seems great to me.

This game was so well done and very satisfying to watch. I truly love the suspense and the way it grew. The protagonist does have stockholm syndrome but Lizzie very much doesn't seem like a yandere she is very very protective and a sweet girl. She does have violent thoughts and violent things but the endings where satisfying same with how John, his metal stability and his relationship with Lizzie and how it grew. This game is very well done and I don't regret watching.

Those words the lab partner said about the other girl got me thinking. If she was regularly obsessed with different boys and the last one got killed by her, doesn't that mean that Lizzie had killed a bunch of boys too before meeting John? Creepy...

10:40 throughout this story I can feel just how much she wants to pounce on him like a tiger. And each time those moments come by I just look at my boy John and smirk with my glasses put in a swag position and just say. “Oh my”
