I started cutting oil filters open at work. Then when I was working for a suspension company I started cutting open shock absorbers. I saw shocks with components that were not far of 1950's technology that were claimed to be advanced.

I use Mann for my VAG turbo diesel (who make the OEM for VW), and Castrol FST LL. Brilliant combination. I’ve done 260,000 Miles on the factory engine and there’s no sign it will stop anytime soon. Castrol LL isn’t cheap, but spread over 10,000 km it’s not expensive either. I change the oil filter (Mann, only) every oil change. At first I changed every 5000 km, but the oil is good for 15,000, so I decided to change every 10,000...no issues - prevention is better than cure.

Great video. I have only used Mann in my Volvo 740 since 1990 - 24 years. The car has well over 300,000 miles on it with no engine rebuild yet. It still runs well with good compression. I believe that the use of Mann filters has helped this car to run well for so many miles and years.

I've been using MANN on my Audi when I bought it at 60,000 miles 3 and a half years ago. The engine still runs strong and smooth and it now has 145,000 miles with no engine problems.

I work at an auto parts store. I always shake my head in wonder when a customer insists on a cheap filter when the cost difference is only a few dollars. Idiots, all of them!

I remember one time when I was driving and when I checked the oil it was way down. I was maybe 60 miles from home. The gas station had ridiculous prices. 3X of normal oil price. I remember that I was a poor college student at that time and money was tight and I hated paying 3 X for oil, but did anyway. It was cheaper than an engine rebuild.

My mechanic recommended this because after-market filters collapse and fold in. He has seen that happen and told me not to waste my money on junk. As the old commercial on television: "Pay me now or pay me later." It basically means, pay for the high dollar change or pay for the high dollar repairs.

Excellent presentation. I will now try to change to a Mann oil filter, but not their air filter. I have used 100% synthetics since 1985 exclusively and change my oil every year. I try to use a high quality filter, the brand I used to use is no longer available, but I change the filter every six months. And that is at about 4,000 km or less.
@majorghn7 жыл бұрын
HJR why do you change every 6 months? Is the filter real dirty after 6 months?
@hjr95617 жыл бұрын
The filter is not an expensive item relative to the car, so I see it as preventative maintenance. I never cut open the oil filter to see how dirty it was. The air filter was a washable filter, which was cleaned every year. I used to have a bypass filter and a bypass/full flow filter combination, using the largest full flow filter possible. I still changed my full flow every six months. Now there is no room under the hood/bonnet for that with modern engines.
@spannerssockets63085 жыл бұрын
Go to a main dealer for your vehicle and buy the filters. Establish who made the filters then buy that brand at a motor factor, probably at half the price, at the next service. Aftermarket and OE can be the same filter. If you want to do an oil filters test, buy one each of the brands you know, get a load of waste oil, mix it all together, divide it up into the number of filters you have. Do a cold and hot oil pour through on each filter and see how much is trapped by the filter medium.

What good does the anti-drainback valve do if the filter is mounted upside down, like on most cars?
@richardking60666 жыл бұрын
Interesting - but no one ever mentions the filtration capability of the filter medium, or the flow-rate. Not so easily compared, perhaps? I've always used cheap filters BTW and as far as I am aware, never had a failure or an engine problem or wear that I was aware of. So hard to know how much of a problem it really is. But I do feel encouraged to buy a better quality brand!
@TrueBlueEG811 жыл бұрын
I have been offered other brands of filters from ny supplier, at a cheaper cost , but I still insist on MANN, there is never any problem fitting, and they are of decent, proven quality, it is not worth saving 50 cent per filter.

Mann, Hengst and Mahle seem to the best quality based on general comment. Some say Bosch but their filters, as far as I can gather, are 3rd party manufactured! However, regarding Mann, I got a fuel filter but sent it back because it looked poor quality and my initial thoughts were that it was fake but the seller assured me it was genuine. The Hengst version simply looks more professional. Also had Blue Print recommend to me but they don’t make the fuel filter I wanted.

I get Mann filters for our x3 VW TDIs because Mann Filters supply the VW factories. Although Mann are a German based company, they have factories outside of Germany. Korea being home to a Mann factory as there a several car manufacturers resident in Korea. If anyone can top the quality of Mann with another brand, then please comment! Just a note! We use Quantum brand 5w30 LL (507.00) engine oil in the TDIs because its stocked by the local VW dealer. We also use 504.00/507.00 in the family 1.3 Ford KA and Hyundai 1.4 i20 due the oil's high specification.

German quality. It is one thing I know that makes me use them. They are OEM filters for many European cars. The uses for these are not just cars however. You can get Mann filters for anything that takes a filter as long as you can find a match for that part or a suitable replacement. You will never find an orange Fram on even my riding mower.

Thank you for a rational & well presented & useful information. On a related note. Do Mann offer combination filters. Full flow with a bypass media, giving 30-40 micron & 1-10 micron filtration? I am looking at a retrofit application for 3/4" -16 to give greater protection & /or longer service intervals. Thus if done correctly saving money & saving oil.

Bitron misses the point - Mann makes the majority of original filters for car manufacturers so you will always get the same quality 7 performance but a bit cheaper. What this video shows is Mann/OE quality compared to cheap aftermarket brands - definitely not worth buying as saving a few pence now could cost pounds later if engine packs up.

No end caps? I thought Fram carboard end caps were a horrifying design. I say horrifying and not horrible because I do not use and will never use Fram filters. I feel that the bright orange can is made that way so you can see it sooner and get it the hell out of there before it destroys your engine. This is assuming that you had a shop change your oil and you did not do it yourself. The one and only reason not to do it yourself would be living in a place that does not allow you to work on your own vehicle in your driveway. I have heard of that from some HOAs. I do not live in a place that is governed by an HOA but I have heard that it can be quite awful sometimes.

Maybe you should tell your customers to warm up the car slowly, let the turbo cool slowly before parking, and to change the oil at shorter intervals than 10k or 20k miles, then the turbo failures would be lower. Oil filters play a very small role in oils role in the engine. If you need an oil filter, you have serious problems with the internals of the engine. The filter is only there in case of internal part failures. When you take apart an oil filter during an oil change there should be nothing inside, ZERO.
@ronanwood68915 жыл бұрын
Mike I believe even the newest engine wears a very small amount. And without a quality filter this can cascade as abrasive particles accumulate in the engine oil. Also a bad quality filter could restrict flow or not filter at all. So they do matter. Very much.

People spend many thousands of pounds on cars,not a problem.When it comes to oil and filter change time,these very same people will go out of their way to find the cheapest oil and filter,they can.A couple of months down the line,they start suffering issues with early engine wear.They can hear engine noises that never used to be there and maybe some turbo issues,if fitted.Their only answer is to blame the car's manufacturer for building such a poor engine! Mr,(I bought oil and filter for £10 person) is now on a steep,expensive,learning curve.All of this is avoidable by buying a genuine oil filter and top quality oil.It's worked for me for over 50 years.

It would be nice if manufacturers would stop churning out zillions of part numbers for essentially the same filter, like I'm looking at a HU7033Z right now, it doesn't even list my car on the packaging but its the correct filter for my car. We've been making cars for a century, by now we should have produced a standard oil filtration device in a handful of performance versions and in a handful of canister formats. But no, every new car has to come with a new filter design that does exactly the same job as the last 300 versions. I can't wait for these feckless manufacturers to get replaced by electric cars. If other people behaved like them we wouldn't have the metric system or standardised thread types
