Metals in the low reactivity series are extracted by oxidizing because they are less reactive Metals medium in the reactivity series are present as carbonate ores and sulphide ores, its easier to extract metals by oxidizing so the carbonate and the sulphide ores are converted to oxides by 2 process, 1:roasting: heating sulphide ores with excess o2 2:calcination: heating carbonate ores with minimum o2 Then the metals are extracted from their respective oxides by using displacement agents such as carbon. Or metals of higher reactivity such as pottasium, sodium, calcuim. Ex: such displacement agents are used in the process of thermite reactions used to join railway tracks. [Fe2O3 + Al = Al2O3 + Fe] The metals in the higher reactivity are extracted by using electrolysis since they are very reactive in nature.
