Today, we're continuing a multi-video journey on which we will be building historically accurate and authentic city designs in Manor lords, a highly anticipated city-building game! I will explain how the game works as I play and explain some historical details as we go!
Manor Lords on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/13...
Manor Lords is a strategy game that allows you to experience the life of a medieval lord. Grow your starting village into a bustling city, manage resources and production chains, and expand your lands through conquest.
Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible, using it to inform gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Common medieval tropes are avoided in favor of historical accuracy, in order to make the world feel more authentic, colorful, and believable.

He did it! Legend! That's exactly what I've had in mind since I saw the first streamer plunk down the manor and I noticed that the circle got bigger when you placed towers. You might want to place down a road through the backyard of the manor to the cliff - that way there's a gate for your archers to go through if you ever have the opportunity to shoot down at the road from up there.

In English castles which were very much intended to be fortifications, you didn't get all of those buildings. You'd have a main keep, a kitchen, stockpiles of weapons and food, and a donjon. But that's really it. The Lord's servants and retinue would often sleep in the Great Hall.

22:30 Just wanted to say, I feel like the reason your soldiers have bad efficiency is because you always have them run everywhere and are also putting them in push forward mode. Running to positions makes your soldiers exhausted, indicated by the yellow exhaustion bar. Pushing forward lowers your troop efficiency by making them disorganised, while heightening their aggression and risk of dying. And I think retinue particularly suffer from exhaustion because of their heavy armour.

That mercenary company, the Wayward Sons, was my submission on the Manor Lords discord server about a year and a half ago! The idea is that they're recently 'exiled' French Jews, who were historically kicked out of the country by the crown in the late 14th century. They've come to this part of the world and are trying to pass themselves off as French rather than Jewish so that they can live with less harassment.

You have created a "Weiler" near the claying pit. Another village form. They were founded on the edge or inside forests. Very often to produce charcoal. Therefore they were instrumental for expanding the available farming and usable land. In general they were very small settlements which slowly did grow into villages, as "Strassendoerfer". (Street villages). You can see their origin in their contemporary names: Weierweiler, Rappweiler, Muenchweiler etc. etc.

Luxembourg has a city called "Weiler-la-Tour" which is a very interesting example of the cultural mix between German and French. The village was originally a "Weiler" as you describe, but had an imposing watch tower, and thus "Tour" (French for tower) was appended to the name.

This is by far the best looking playthrough I've seen so far. The attention to historical accuracy is really interesting and highlights cultural differences with Britain for example. In Britain, the villages by law had to have a central 'green' area that was a common pasture for all the village. Every villager had the right to pasture their livestock on the green without having to own land. I hope when the game finally releases they plan on introducing functionality such as common pasture land and may be a muster field for the militia to practice and drill on. Having stables for cavalry would also be nice.

Your fort is actually a fairly close approximation of a British hill fort. These were common in the iron age, especially in the south of England, and I expect some were possibly still used in the dark ages. They were very large, communal, fortified settlements built atop high hills, usually with palisades built on top of high earthen banks to make them extra difficult to assault. It's thought that they were usually occupied by whole farming communities, who would work on the surrounding lands and then store their harvests within the safety of the walls, so that if neighbours decided to try to attack them, they would have a safe, fortified, well-stocked place to retreat into and defend from.

I think the English fortified manors were a lot like how you are describing also - although they would have needed a "licence to crenellate" to fortify their manor. So a big house for the lord with great hall and apartments, maybe a moat or wall around it, Then there would be peasants farming outside, deer park for venison. A little mini-town around the manor to serve it. That's presumably what the "manor" in-game is trying to be - just the main house - but I agree with you, not being able to build a big enclosed walled area and put a mini-town inside is annoying. Sometimes you want an actual motte-and-bailey.

Loving the historical accuracy, but my one point of contention is that you would not have that much forest so close to the town and fortification. Forest provides easy terrain for enemies to sneak up on a village and so you would usually cut down atleast a 50-100m wide strip around the village and manor. Also most of the forest around a village would have been cut down anyway to provide timber for the construction of the village

Love the way video games can foster positive leadership traits like understanding the past is so important going into the future because people rise and fall and stuff and you never know when you might need these random skills like a zombie apocalypse or after a flood and it’s good to preserve it In practical ways like games where people can not only have fun but be custodians of our history that’s still very much alive in a dynamic world where you still have so many different systems of governance and levels of technology from tribal to people landing on the moon and who knows maybe these kind of things will be how people settle new solar systems at first with similar practices of community idk I’m tired don’t know if I’m expressing myself coherently. Would love to see more defensive buildings, guard posts, legal tolls and like you mentioned bandit's that try to extort a toll rather than outright attacking

Kosericz - before you spoke it as a German would, I read it as how I would and I immediately noticed that it sounds quite similar to a village in Serbia called Kosjerić near Tara mountain.

Since you have three plots in the manor...just let (some of) them work the smithy.

It should be said many Raubritter weren't technically criminals in the traditional sense, but rather they made a living off their right to wage feuds. Once a feud is declared, a knight could legally raid and attack the property of his opponent. So what some knights (such as the infamous Götz von Berlichingen, though he was rather late to the party) would do was, they'd turn it into a sort of specialized mercenary business. If someone had a bone to pick with an opponent who had a higher social status or a more powerful military, they could hire such a Raubritter. That Raubritter would then use his right to declare a feud on the enemy of the person who hired them and attack that enemy, giving people such as wealthy merchants a legal tool to fight back against knights who gave them trouble. Raubritter could also be hired as enforcers if one had obtained a judgement against a more powerful opponent.

Blue Silver feels kind of correct since the colors in german heraldic are Gold, Silver, Red, Blue, Green and Black. The bavarian colors are blue and silver.

Fortified manor houses are cool. It’s weird to think that most of what we think of as castles are just those that were big and strong enough to survive the destruction, weathering and cannibalizing of the last 1,000 years. If I understand correctly, most 11th-13th century castles were fortified manor houses that began as motte and Bailey and were improved? Btw, does Hohenstauffen mean “High Stauffen”, or “High Hills?”

In norway there wasn't really any castles, but monesteries and churches, especially churches were the "castles" of Norway were people could hide if needed and strongholds for soldiers, and to this day it's a våpenhus (weaponhouse) in most churches. In Norway from around 1100, but in the whole domminion after the land wide law of Magnus /Lagabøte/VII in 1274 every man had to have spears or any type of weapons themself and serve, if not they would pay i think dobble or three times the tax. For every area there was someone in charge of the local millitia and then someone higher up in the system from them with the supreme commander on top.
