Around 1312 CE, Kankan Musa, Sundiata’s nephew, assumed the throne of Mali-one of the most important empires in West Africa long before the arrival of Europeans. He took the royal name Mansa Musa. It is during Musa’s reign that Mali reached a new high point. Follow Musa’s journey from his assumption of power to ruling the wealthiest nation of the 14th century. This lecture will include clips from Dr. Zuberi’s latest documentary on the life of Mansa Musa, Before Things Fell Apart, and reflections on his forthcoming book, Black Bodies in Word: Ciini Bibi.
About the Speaker
Tukufu Zuberi is the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations and Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He is dedicated to bringing a fresh view ofculture and society to the public through various platforms. Dr. Zuberi is the writer and producer for African Independence, an award-winning feature-length documentary film that highlights the birth, realization, and problems confronted by the movement to win independence in Africa. The story is told by channeling the voices of freedom fighters and leaders who achieved independence, liberty, and justice for African people. With this and other documentary film projects, Dr. Zuberi is dedicated to bringing a critical, creative vision not typically seen or heard to the big and small screen.

Awesome! The sort of historical legend of Mansa Musa making his way to Mecca and breaking the world economy with all his gold has always been fascinating to me.

Ohh, once you leave the eurocentric spehre ther is sooo much still to explore. May I direct your eyes towards indian histories done by post-colonial indian scholars? They typically publicize in english anyway, and it opens up an incredible depth of multiethnic history and culture of the giant sucontinent which at times was the beating heart of humanity. The Mogul empire alone, the riches, the power, the intrigue, the internationality between arab and asian world, islam, buddhism and hinduism, all of those religions building their own yet interdependent monastic schools and systems.....

I think Mansa Musa made the caravan journey as a way to record and document his achievements and himself. When he knew he was emperor of the continent of Africa and knew how significant that is he needed to document that fact in a way the world would remember. Knowing that pictures and text might not. A historian. He knew people love drama! Seems like he was in awe of himself and sure enough to leave the empire in the hands of his generals and sure enough to know he could caravan journey and not be flexed with. Lol. This should give you all you need to confirm him as da man! Lol

if you are watching this because you want to learn about Mansa Musa or the creation/development of Mali don't bother. if you want to listen to someone able about their historic vacation this is the video for you. he talks around the important subjects but not enough to watch this video over any others.

The lecturer talks *around* the topic but never actually tells us anything about Malian history. He's too wrapped up in his own process.

I am quite disappointed. I came here to learn more about Mali‘s past, Mansa Musa and all the cultures, states, history that comes with it. Instead, it was all about self-reflection of Dr. Zuberi.

To use the term „CE“ instead of „AD“ is a deliberate slight against both Western culture and Christian religion. Whoever uses this term and maintains himself being a historian, is lying.

Oh how we have forgotten how the west and Christianity have slighted the rest of the world. From stolen birthrights to changing the calendar, the west should have nothing to cry about because it is called recompense.
