Rob demonstrates how to make a funky Slice & Swap quilt using 10 inch squares (layer cakes) and 1.5 inch strips of precut fabric (honey buns). He chose "Zen Batiks" Stack Pack by Kathy Engle for Island Batik and "Bella Solids" Honey Bun by Moda Fabrics.

I have been watching tutorials and reading about quilting for 10 years. I don't know anyone who quilts so I've been on my own. WHY have I never seen the jump stitch idea!!! Holy smokes. No more starting and stopping for my different designs in different blocks. You are a life saver! Thank you! (and I fee kinda stupid for never thinking of this on my own).

I have quilted since I was a small girl, learned all my mothers bad habits. I have recently started following your tutorials and I LOVE this one! Began teaching my granddaughter last year. We're snowbirds, having a small time back in WA state to sew with her. Bought her a sewing machine for her 21st birthday and we sew virtually together on weekend's now. She's 3rd yr university student and works part time. This will be our next project together and her first actual quilt. She's made scrappy squares for throw pillows, pillow cases, bins. We've even made face masks together virtually. its time for a bigger project and this will be perfect. looks complex, but your technique breaks it down so well. Thank you.

This might sound odd but thanks for acknowledging that the lines won't match perfectly. I've seen many quilt tutorials & patterns where those lines just can't line up (because hypotenuses) but they don't mention that. So someone making the quilt (who didn't know about the math bits) was destined to wonder why their corners weren't lined up. By addressing it up front, folks can let go the expectation & just love the process.

Oh - & I think I may do this with the dragonfly dance line. I got the layer cake when it was the deal of the day. It's so beautiful, I don't want to cut it too small. Since it's mostly non-directional, I think it would be beautiful in this - perhaps with off-white, pale green sashing...

I just rewatched this video. I have some charm packs. Even tho they are smaller than the layer cakes. You used in this video. The sequencing is the same. So I'm going to be using this design. For my charm packs, I think it will still come out really nice. Thanks for this video, it's very helpful. And the way you explained it.Is very easy to follow along. In making my own quilt.

I am now in the middle of making this quilt. I have all the piecing finished, I've sashed the verticles, just haven't accomplished the final sashing across. I must say that my brain had a very hard time with this. It is a quilt of love or I would have thrown it across the room several times! I know I stacked it properly so I would sew it together in the correct order, yet when I checked my work, there was a mistake and I had to pick out stitches and resew. It's a good thing I pray while I sew! I got a lot of prayers in that quilt. I guess that's good. I finally came up with a method of putting a pin in the top left corner of each piece so I'd know what went where. It will be easy from here on, because it's just sashing between the rows, putting on the border and adding the backing. Oh, I thought you'd be interested, I'm adding a scripture to the border - I Cor. 13:12. My friend is ill. Thank you for a REAL challenge for my brain. Maybe I'll send you a picture.

I was captivated by your mention of creating a "mosaic look". My crazy designer brain went immediately to the idea of intentionally creating a mosaic design using the same techniques. With a little extra design work one could create a mosaic image on the quilt top. Nothing ornate, because the pieces are too big for that, but a simple geometric or maybe a tree pattern would be pretty do-able. Hmmm ...

I have some Stonehenge Tiles layer cakes that I going to use with beige sashing. Makes me think of the beach (sea glass), mosaic, stained glass and will be perfect for my son and his wife in Massachusetts. I've collected sea glass all my life, this just reminds me of tiles. It's just before Christmas 2017, so this will be a king size bed quilt for Christmas gift 2018. Thoughts about size Rob (or anyone)? Rows across? down? Borders, backing and binding?
