Thevarams are devotional hymns sung in praise of Shiva by the 3 Nayanmars: Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar and Sundarar. Rendered in an ancient musical style that precedes most Indian classical music systems, these songs give us an insight into the wave of bhakti that swept across southern India during the 7th Century. In this album, children of Isha Samskriti have rendered a select few Thevaram, as an offering to today’s world.
The Nayanmars travelled the length and breadth of South India, predominantly in current day Tamil Nadu, and the temples in this region find a place in their songs. The 275 temples mentioned in Thevaram are referred to as “Paadal Petra Thalam,” which literally means “the temples that were sung in the verses”. The singing of Thevaram is still an active process in many Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.
Vibhuti or sacred ash has always been revered in the Indian culture. More so, since it's seen as a reminder of our mortality. Ideally made of the ashes from the cremation ground, vibhuti has the ability to move one toward his or her higher nature. Sambandar, it is said, cured the mysterious illness of a king, simply by applying vibhuti on him, whilst chanting "Manthiram Avadhu Neeru" that extolls the many qualities of vibhuti.
“The man connected with Divine wisdom” or Thiru Gnana Sambandar was a young bala yogi from around the 7th century CE, Tamil Nadu. He couldn’t teach since he was a child, so he sang wonderfully to express his enlightenment. He challenged the existing belief systems through his poetry and discourses. The first three of the Thirumurai are compilations of his poems.

ஆம் சகோதரரே.. தமிழ் நாட்டில் போலி நாத்தீகம் பேசும் திராவிட பன்றிகள் கிறிஸ்தவ மிசினரிகளோடு கூட்டு சேர்ந்து தமிழர்களின் ஆன்மகத்தை அழிக்க துடித்து வருகிறது... இந்த கேடுகெட்ட கும்பலால் இங்கே பல முட்டாள் தமிழர்கள் மூளைச்சலவை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்கள். நம் சமயத்தை பற்றி நம்மையே தவறாக பேச வைப்பது போன்ற பல கீழ்த்தரமான வேலைகளை செய்து வருகிறார்கள்.

This pasuram is like a magic wand for me. When ever anyone falls ill in family, in the sense have fever I recite this chant. The next moment we will sweat and fever gone. After my uterus removal surgery I developed fever due to urinary tract infection. Was reciting this and fever gone. It's not the symptoms which goes off, but the source of infection would be gone.

this is not paasuram... Vaishnava texts are called as Paasuram... In Thevaaram they call it Pan or paadal or padhigam. Sorry if am wrong

Thanks to Isha for bringing Thevaram to ordinary people in easy , acceptable way. In TN , the traditional Othuvar who sings this hymn are steep in tradition. Thus their way of singing don't gets well with current generation. This effort is plausible. Sad reality is vast number of Tamil people are unaware of Thevaram and Thiruvasagam. Partially its because of above reason and Tamil in its higher class needs one with sound grasp of the language to comprehend. It is very important to spread the knowledge of Periya Puranam ( means Big Story ) or Thiru Thondar puranam ( Story of 63 Siva Bakthas ) . It covers not only devotion but shed light of how our ancestors lived and challenges posed by other faiths.

The Thevaram song are mostly sang at funerals, memorials or any prayers for the dead in South Africa , We where told that it helps the soul on its journey to moksha. I only know of one shiva temple that sing these songs daily at a Shiva Temple here. Thanks for the song and the English translation. This ragum is way better than people singing it here.

After I come to home I not do anything just I will take my phone and headphone and hear these songs also humming my mother will scold me always but I won't take it care and hearing thevaram because it is my or our dad song. And I will hear it until my sleep and wake up and after 6am I will scrub my home work. It has a emotion It can't be explained by words in my depressed time it will give me a happiness And in my happy times it will remember my duties. Ravana is one of the best Shiva Paktha. Though he has this character, no discipline is embedded. Knowledge without discipline will lead to evil and then destruction. See the western world.

Amazing rendition...Thiru Gnana Sambandhar had infused healing and stress removal in this song..He himself was the Son of Shiva and Parvati...a divine Avatar of Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga and Lord Ayyappan...so no surprise that he could even revive the dead back to life...Such greatness of our music that it could mesmerize even the Gods...and Isha team have done the same... it is amazing to hear these beautiful thaveram songs. I was taught by late dad when he had a tamil school in 1960,we used to have Sunday service. Our tamil teacher used to go over the song at classes and we wil it on Sundays, it was so soothing. I went to tamil school before going to school. my dad passed away in 1969 involved in a motor car accident,tamil school closed.
