Ummmmm I dunno bud, probably because they are well fed? also if you look at old circus pictures, the Lions they used to have were HUGE, I personally suspect it could be in addition to being fed a lot, the male Lions have a growth promoting gene but Lionesses have a growth inhibiting gene, it could be that Lionesses get stressed in circuses which results in somehow weakening that gene and hence the resulting male cubs grow large, or I am just overthinking because the lions are just very well fed, although abused asf.

In various mountainous areas throughout Africa, lions had this kind of appearance which is of course an adaptation to the cooler mountain climates, but these mountain dwelling lions have been killed off leaving only a few small populations.
