Yes, I get a mower deck & disassemble the spindles, drill & tap the side of spindle outer housing & fit zerk grease fittings (if not equipped), replace bad bearings, removing all Inner seals, install lower bearing & shaft into housing, fill housing thru zerk, install upper bearing & seal cap & pulley nut loosely & Slowly pump in a little more grease until the seal cap starts to rise. Now I Know its full of grease! Then finish the install & get long life from them now! Thanks for sharing for everyone!

As soon as it’s 50F in the shop I’m disassembling the Z54 deck and chasing out the bearings checking them for wear and lube.. and ensuring any seals facing the lube cavity have the seal removed (bottom spindle bearing) and for the upper bearing 3-4 1/8” (or 3/32”) holes drilled in each seal facing the lube cavity (carefully removing the plastic machining) so that grease can press into the bearings. The holes drilled in the seal will reduce loss in higher temps/high load and lower viscosity conditions. Same deal with the zero turn front castor wheel shaft bearings and castor swivel post bearings. I can’t deal with down time in the cutting season for an unknown status of REAL spindle bearing lubrication as provided by the mfg. When the grass is 4” tall and the spring rains are coming in a day... that’s no time for a deck bearing to take out my zero turn for 3-4 days. And...with limited parts I’m hearing about. Husqa-poulan couldn’t answer my spindle bearing seal/lube question. Also my 42” Cub spindles are “ventilated”. The air under the deck (with high lift blades) presses cut grass under the spindle pulley and fills up under the pulley and belt guards on top of the deck. At one point I had a smoking grass fire under one pulley/pulley cover. Who designs a deck where air needs to exhaust out the chute and not up through the spindle deck mounts. The deck is always filled with grass coming from around each of the three spindle casting mount arms. Nice post!

Great video on spindle bearings,I notice years ago on low end mowers had no grease fitting,yes they are sealed bearings. Then I started buying spindles with grease fittings but notice they all had sealed bearings. I totally agree on removing one seal on each bearing will make a big difference. Also go find higher grade USA made bearings and will increase all load capacity and durability .As long as keep pumping a little grease in each spindle any dirt/water will stay out.

Great video Jeremy. I tell my guys all the times to check the blade spindles everyday to make sure nothing is wrapped around them so the bearings don't get ruined.

No one ever checks for built up string, wire, etc. on their spindles. I offer to disassemble and do an actual bearing clean and grease when I do an bc annual deck service. They are amazed how quiet the deck sounds after that! Another great vid Jeremy!

I've been removing the inner seals now for about 3 seasons..on mine and customers..i also make it clear to grease the spindles at the beginning of the season for best results..the bearings last way longer than they would if you did nothing..the way john deere and husqvarna have it set up is useless...Cheers 🥂🥂🥂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Did'nt know that about the bearing seals. I think l will remove mine if l have to go in there for any reason.

Besides keeping moisture out, filling the cavity with grease also acts like a heat sink for the bearings.

i would remove the inside seals if it is a rubber seal ,if it is a metal seal no need

Shame on the manufacturers for allowing bean counters to run the show instead of engineers.

they assume the average joe dont notice as they make their products as cheaply as possible.& their right.the average joe drops it off at dealer.dealer charges arm & leg & marks up factory part & installs.but knows the customer has 1 or 2 more spindles that will fail soon.so the whole process repeats.the dealer still gets to make 500$ on average joes long after the sale.its called rigging the system to assure future income.& they HATE it when people call them out on it.so i (we) fix their design (flaws?) first. & they last many MANY hours afterward.its up to us to fix INTENTIONAL design flaws in newer products we buy.its a pain in the ass, but we dont have constant breakdowns or needed repairs either & keep our 500$ in our pockets.even the greasable housings suck because the grease side of the bearings dont have their seals removed so that grease can enter the bearings.so the average joe greases his spindles but NO grease ever enters the bearing & race because its still sealed from the factory.you MUST remove the inside(grease side) seal to allow any grease to penetrate bearings.the dealers WONT tell you that either.

It's not just JD that puts sealed, both sides, bearings in their spindles.

They don't do it because it takes a half tube of grease!!!

Design engineers, who have no clue and bean counters that saved pennies on bearings with dust shields . Quality is out in the pasture under the cow patty.
