Gating System :
• Gate is a channel or passage through which molten metal enters into the mould from the runner.
Functions of gating system :
1. To fill up the mould with molten metal.
2. To fill up the molten metal with less force (less turbulence)
3. To fill up the mould uniformly.
4. To supply liquid metal during shrinkage
5. To prevent slag and unwanted particles from entering the mould.
6. To supply molten metal at the best location of the mould.
• Gating system consists of
1. Pouring Cup (or) Basin
2. Sprue
3. Gate
4. Runner and Riser.
1. Pouring Basin :
• It is also known as the Pouring cup.
• It is the widened area on top of the sprue hole.
2. Sprue :
• Sprue takes molten metal from the pouring basin to the runner.
3. Runner :
• The runner carries molten metal from the sprue and supplies it to different gates.
4. Gate :
• Molten metal enters the mould through the gate.
5. Riser :
• A riser is a passage in the sand made in the cope.
• After the mould is filled up, the molten metal rises into the riser and comes to the top.
The functions of a riser are :
• It supplies molten metal to the mould during shrinkage
• It is used as a large vent for steam and gases to go out.
• When the molten metal comes up in the riser indicates the complete filling up of the mould cavity
