When I was living in Japan I was shocked to learn that many Japanese "celebrate" Christmas but that they had no idea that Christmas was a Christian holiday.

And wearing crosses just as “accessories” 😆 I saw that a lot so I asked my woman what’s going on with that. She said it’s just a style. I don’t follow any religion but that seemed odd to me coming from the Deep South of America.

It's not. It has nothing to do with Jesus, he was not born on that day and the Bible says nothing about decorating a tree and putting offerings underneath it. When Jesus was born, the Shepherds were out in the field watching for new Lambs to be born. Lambs are born in the springtime. If it were winter the shepherd's will not be out in the cold neither to sheep. It's just common sense that I don't think we should turn our brain off just for some tradition

@@jaredmackey4511you should have asked her if it was just as stylish to wear a Jewish Yamacha and prayer shawl. The cross is Meaningful because Jesus died on it for our sins and rose again, it is a cosmic event thst forever altered human destiny. Seeing it reduced to a meaningless trinket is sad.

Jesus is God. “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the Word was God”.. “ and the word became flesh and dwelt among us”. For those that believe on his name, and confess our sins, have the right not through our own deeds but through Christ dying and being raised from the dead, to be saved from sin and forgiven. Brother, I would encourage you to read John 1

@@masao2922 That’s a great point. Every religion has their own bridge to mankind. For Christianity it’s Jesus, for Buddhism it’s Buddha, for Islam it’s Mohammad. I can not satisfy full intent of your question, but I will say what sticks out to me about Christianity is that it is not a religion. In no other faith does love, in the divine sense, play such a part in forming a relationship with God. The act of proving ourselves worthy of approval or acceptance seems only exclusive to beliefs outside of a Christians’ faith - because according to them, God has always known we’ve been broken. That His love for us is greater than death… which is why He proved that by becoming flesh, being crucified by mankind, and rising from the dead. It was not only proof to the world that Jesus is God, but a payment for the brokenness of the world and a path to a relationship with God, which lasts forever as He exists eternally. Eternal life through Jesus Christ.

I'm a Japanese Christian and I highly doubt that 62% are atheist. Most Japanese people do believe in god or some kind of higher power cuz that is part of our culture. but many Japanese people think religion is kinda scary and sketchy (some cults did really bad things in Japan) so they don't wanna be religious.

You become a Christian when you accept that, as a sinner who is incapable of paying the price for sin, accept Jesus Christ's **free** gift of salvation through his sacrifice at the cross. Religions stray from the word of God in favor of doctrine that either goes against the teachings of the Bible or enforces rules for salvation. Religion divides people into camps, forces you to follow traditions, or denies the free gift in favor of what man teaches (not God).

That wasn’t a coincidence, Truman was a freemason sand they hate and persecute Catholicism, just like what they did in Mexico during the cristero war. Really interesting but look into St Maximilian Kolbe and the monastery he founded in Nagasaki: “The monastery he founded remains prominent in the Roman Catholic Church in Japan. Kolbe decided to build the monastery on a mountain side that, according to Shinto beliefs, was not the side best suited to be in tune with nature. When the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Kolbe’s monastery was saved because the blast of the bomb hit the other side of the mountain, which took the main force of the blast. Had Kolbe built the monastery on the preferred side of the mountain as he was advised, his work and all of his fellow monks would have been destroyed”

I seem to recall a study showing many did believe in a higher power or were simply open to the idea making them theists and agnostics. They are most certainly not atheist. I am Asian from my mother’s side. Religion is thought of very differently. It is not something you are a “member” of. It is a part of daily cultural life and is not thought of as we think of it in the West. Asian people are not overt atheists at all and are quite spiritual, they just are not members of official clergy and, thus, see themselves as non-religious as a result. The way the West sees atheism is very different from what the East sees it as and it does not carry the same ideological connotations.

Christianity is inclusive: anyone can come to Christ regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status. But it is exclusive: only through Jesus can you truly know God. Just as going in a garage doesn’t make you a car, so having a wedding in a church does not make you a Christian. Jesus wants all of your heart and allegiance. And that is easy to do when you see what He has done and proved His love on the cross.

I am Indonesian of Chinese descent. I am a Buddhist, but I also love Christmas & back at school often celebrate Christmas with my Christian/Catholic friends. Because Christmas always look fun with all the decor, nice stories & movies. My Catholic friend even allowed me to borrow her bible to read some of the interesting bible stories I've heard about. Majority of Indonesians are Muslim so during Ramadan, my Muslim friends and I would schedule a meet-up to break their fasting together (I'm not fasting). My mom would make ketupat and all the signature dishes that go with it and give it to her Muslims friends, of which her Muslim friends would give us the same thing. It's kinda an old tradition of Jakartans but not many people know or do now, sharing homemade ketupat. I go to vihara and celebrate important days in Buddhism: Vesak, Asalha Puja, Magha Puja, Kathina. Everything based on the Theravada teachings, a Buddhism practice that is said to be the closest version to how people done it when Buddha Gautama was still alive. On the other hand, I also celebrate Lunar New Year because of my Chinese lineage and go to the temples to pray to well-known gods & goddesses in ancient Chinese culture. On January 1st, most people in my country celebrates it with dinners and events just like most people do in western countries. When getting married: people here either do it according to their religion + culture, or you could just straightaway go to the civil registration office. It's okay to celebrate other culture or important days of other religions as long as you understand the background story of it. If you're cherry picking only the fun part, those things would have no meanings. And when you can't find meaning in life, you will start losing yourself. Start learning more about your own religion. But also don't be a fanatic, overdoing it and became too religious, it can make you go crazy too. It is never good to think your religion is the best and that people will not find blessing/salvation in life unless they join your religion. This kind of mindset is why we have extremists.

My japanese grandma grew up christian. She doesn't do halloween, but she's ok with nikko Lucky Cat (shinto idol, I think, that's what she said). She wanted to be cremated, which is a more buddist way of burial. The memorial service was christian in japanese with a translator. We did not cover mirrors or put food out. Grandma believed there are two destinations. Spirit doesn't hang around. Grandma went to the house the father prepared. I know it looked like the chiba-ken of grandma's youth. She missed japan a lot the farther she slipped into dementia.

I think there are far more religious people in Japan than statistics say there are, especially Christians. Cultists have soured peoples views on Religion in general over there, so most fearing of being seen as nails that stick out, choose to class themselves as Atheists or Buddhists, which is much more socially acceptable in an extremely conformist country like Japan.

Personally Japan’s really laid-back mindset towards religion is almost what drives me to want to move there really. I have found that oftentimes religion holds people back from their full potential on earth and causes more problems than good, like wars, dissensions etc, here in america I feel like religion is becoming our ultimate downfall, religion (in my opinion) oftentimes keeps societies from moving forward or prospering greatly. Also I say this personally myself being a believer in Christianity. I find a lot of arrogance among many other people who claim to be Christians here in america. I believe God does not want us to be arrogant. When people become arrogant over God or the things they believe, thats when I define it as religion. While personally i believe the basic fundamentals of Christianity (Jesus is God, he died and rose again etc) i think God reveals himself in his own way to every person whether they believe or dont believe. He never forces himself onto people like religious people would have us to believe. Ultimately in the Bible Jesus was crucified by religious people because he called out how they’d choose religion over humanity and they hated him. Thats what i feel like is happening in America right now. I think people need the real Jesus that loves people instead of the picture religion has painted about God, the less religion the better 👍. So thats one reason i really like Japanese culture 😁

It should also be noted that the 62% atheist stat is actually 62% self-identified as not a member of a religion, which is important to note because in Japan(according to Wikipedia) membership of a religion usually refers to the clergy/priesthood or monks/nuns of that religion. So, naturally, the percentages of the population self-identifying as members of certain religions will be lower the actual percentages of the population that practice and/or believe them, and the percentage of the population that self-identifies as "no religion" will be higher than the actual percentage of the population that is truly atheist.

My view is that Japanese people believe what they want to believe. They are perfectly happy to celebrate religious events, but only on their terms (which tend to be superficial). I suspect most Japanese are polytheistic and believe a mishmash of things, which means a single person can be buddhist _and_ shintoist _and_ very superficially Christian _and_ whatever else is fashionable at the moment. Personally, I think it's a healthy way of accepting multiple religions.

As a Euroopean Buddhist, I like going to church and singing hymns. But I prefer meditation and retreats. I started thinking in a more "Japanese" way about religions when I became a Buddhist.

I pray for more Japanese to come to the feet of Jesus, however if shrines or other customs don't Glorify God then more Japanese disciples of Christ should stand up and preach the word and not be afraid of offending, but still understanding that if certain traditions or symbolism offends God the Gospel shall still remain and narrow is the way , but very few know it and it's Jesus Christ. Iesu Kirisuto. Yeshua . Adonai. Cristo Jesus. Jehova. Etc etc

Amen, so true. Praying for the Gospel to grow in Japan, Halloween is satanic it has nothing to do with Lord Jesus Christ, please don’t partake in that holiday. Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️! Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Racism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget! So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.

Japanese people enjoy activities from various religions, even if they don't fully understand the reasons behind them. It comes from a historical mindset in Japan. There was a time when Buddhism and Shinto were the two major religions in Japan. Instead of eliminating one, they chose to combine both, or rather, to let them co-exist. In Japanese culture, people typically don't hate or try to convince others to change their religious beliefs. They accept different practices and celebrate life, regardless of the religious rituals involved.

What speaks to me about Japanese people is that they are open to the truth of who Jesus really is and what He did because of their simple way of wanting to fit in and not be different due to historical events where Japanese people were oppressed about their religious views which dates back to very harsh and horrible repercussions for claiming to be followers of Jesus such as public executions and torture, even to torture little children who believed in Christ, that is now why we see people of Japan so open to religion because in their past it has been a big oppression

Well religion is defined very christocentric. Some Christians even say that Buddhism isn’t a religion at all. Still the Japanese society is influenced by Buddhism and if they practice Buddhism by visiting Buddhist temples I wouldn’t say they are a-religious (atheism makes no sense in this regards because Buddhism itself is a non-theistic religion). I find it highly interesting how religion manifests non-Christian countries and how religion shapes these societies differently than Christianity

If you are Japanese or in an area that is very heavy with nonbelievers, then hear me out. I decided i would pray every single day at least once, for an amazing testimony to share with people. In my heart, i believed i would have kept praying for the rest of my life, if i had too. So after 8 months or so, God gave an AMAZING testimony that is very real... Then, that event strengthened my faith to the point that i started getting amazing prayers answered very often because i quit doubting... and was alinged with the Bibles instructions. Then, i started copying and pasting my testimony all over these KZfaq comment sections and sharing it with people id meet... Im telling you, it adds up and sharing your testimony gets easy to do... Especially if its online. THIS way of reaching the masses is so effective and easy...
