I have to say, this scene has me intrigued in the show overall. Also I really REALLY hope that Holo gets a fair shake in Spice and Wolf's remake. She was ok in the old anime, but didnt have the benefit of all the time the books give to develop her as a character to show why she's really special.

I’m not sure if this actually takes place in ‘China’ per se. I was thinking it takes place in an alternate world that features Chinese like features similar to Avatar.

The setting is fictional, though, heavily inspired by late Ming Dynasty China. So I would say around 16th-17th cetury. Though, I heard cacao only got to China in the early 19th cenrury.
