it is so beautiful and even if outnumbered by colonists etc, this language is still alive and medieval times are over, repressions have stopped and, even though it's easier and kind of more practical to speak English, every nation should learn, speak and respect the indigenous language(s) of lands where they live. Greetings from Latvia, EU.

No, Maori belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family; which means it is related to Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog and other Maritime Southeast Asian languages as well as Malagasy, Hawaiian and other languages spoken by Taiwanese aborigines and Pacific Islanders.

For all the idiots in the comments, try actually studying languages before arrogantly comments your "views." I'll begin by writing hiragana (Japanese alphabet) comparison of words. EG .....・.....・..... Then write in Latin alphabet (English Equivalent). Then finish with the KANJI meaning. Yes they all share meanings. Jp. = Japanese Ok. = Okinawa An. = Ainu Mao. = Maori Mori. = Moriori られる・声・これろ rareru jp.passive voice koe ok. voice, speak korero mao.speak, talk KANJI: NO けぶ・こふ kebu jp.smoke fumes kohu moriori.smoke mist haze KANJI: 煙 食べ・かむ・かめ tabe jp.eat kamu ok.eat kame mao.eat KANJI: 食 かりて・かい karite jp.food kai maori.food KANJI: 糧 もう・まー・もり mou (mō) jp.within mā mao.within mori moriori.within KANJI: 以 おり・おり・おり ori jp.weave, woven, folded ori mao. folded, waves, skies, clouds ori moriori. folded, agitated KANJI: 織 Native country names are very similar Nihon jp.sun origin Aotearoa mao.dawn long white Rēhokū moriori.sun smokey (kanji: 日本・雲白長・日煙) あい・あい ai jpn.craving, attachment, desire ai mao.love, desire sexual intercourse KANJI: 愛 ねこ・んげる neko jp.cat ngeru mao.cat KANJI: 猫 わた・わい wata jp.ocean, river wai mao.water, ocean KANJI: 海 はな・はな hana jp.blossom, bloom, beauty hana mao.glow, sparkle, blossom KANJI: 花 なに、なん、か・あは、ひゃ、わい nani, nan, ka jp.particle, unknown, questionable (hiragana: irrelavent) aha, wai, hea mao.particle, unknown, questionable KANJI: 何 ですね・いーね "desu" ne jp.particle interogative, really, isnt it? inē, nē mao.interigative particle, really, isnt it? (kanji: 河伯) Maori made up of sir, god, cheif + ?ni? * number four. て・て Te jp.particle indicated continuing action Te mao. particle indicates continuing action "after kei" indicates object when singular. KANJI: NO ひと・たひ hito, hi, hii jp. one tahi, mao. one KANJI: 一 ひめ・ひね hime jp. young lady of moble birth hine mao. young girl, maiden KANJI: 姫 かん・か kan jpn.suffix looks to be, noun ka, kā mao.particle before a word, looks as if, is, describes KANJI: 観 Most of the people comment have no knowledge in the Maori language, have no knowledge in language families, and those claiming to know Japanese are idiotic teens who probably took year 10 Japanese and think they're fluent. I bet none of you know of Proffessor Naoko Yui is. If you have researched, your would know old Japanese and Austronesian are cousin languages which both originated from the same language family “austro- japonic” or “old austronesian”. The Jomon Japanese were Austronesian themselves, that's why they speak an AUSTRONESIAN language. Don't learn modern Japanese and claim you know about the entire language and archaic versions of it. Stupid people.
