I like coming back to this video because I really enjoy this particular style of horror/analog horror, with the alternates and uncanny valley effect. It's got a really good mesh of elements that make it so perfectly scary for different reasons. You have your uncanny valley effect, the idea of something being human-like but not quite right. Then you have the idea of the unknown, of something you don't or can't fully grasp. Then the idea of the unknown assailant/entity/etc being smart or sentient enough to learn; it's not just mindless and acting on base instinct, it is intelligent and can adapt and can actively choose to deceive you or lure you in. And then the idea of false hope or even no hope; the fact that even if you can cry out for help, help is not coming, you are alone and you will not be saved. And lastly, the element of something being in your space, your home, a place that is usually inherently believed as a haven; that's now no longer true, and you are no longer comfortable or safe in your own home/or place that should be those things. I really like analyzing horror concepts and understanding why exactly things are scary. This mandela catalogue style in particular is fantastic at nailing one or more of these elements.

the scary thing about games like this, is that they tap into the uncanny valley effect. which is not just something that some people have, it's an instinctual thing. It causes anxiety and fear because we a humans, fear what we dont know. Uncanny valley is where something can look human but slightly off. It scares us because were unable to identify if it's entirely a threat or not

What's peculiar about the "Uncanny Valley" effect, is that it suggests that somewhere in the evolution of humans, we evolved to be disturbed and/or scared of... something.
@kingp1n8172 жыл бұрын
Very true, In addition, unpredictable and chaotic noises, specially the scream of women and children are naturally carved into our brains as a sign of threat. Mixing this with realistic footage instead of cartoon-ish or at least some what unrealistic graphics that others usually use, and the distortion of normal stuff like sounds and faces, giving them more unnatural properties, results the worst possible for our beains
@cailynaube2 жыл бұрын
Apparently thats why some people are scared of clowns and why so many things that are “spooky” (think slenderman) have humanoid features but usually too long and gangly to be normal. It was cool to see someone bring it up here!

This. This was creepy. Not scary, creepy. The unnatural idea of alternates, and the distorted images. The twisted calls of "Let me in Mark", the denial to help those in an alternate encounter. Terrifying. Loved it though.

Those type of videos are called Analog Horror, there's a bunch of good ones on youtube
Probably my favorite form of horror. They aren't cheap like jumpscares, but instead know what makes you tick, and knows exactly how to get under your skin. Also fun fact: The creator of the Mandela Catalogue got inspiration from the pandemic. The months spent cooped up in his own house - a very secure place - got him thinking about how to make something *unsecure* He also said something along the lines of "It wasn't the boogeyman that scared me as a child, but the idea of coming home one day, going to your room, and seeing yourself standing there." That's definitely the inspiration behind the alternates, and he did a fantastic job portraying them.

If anybody is wondering why this is so unsettling, it is because the game makes use of ‘the uncanny valley’ which is the designation for things that look very human but which we (for an unknown reason) know are definitely not. In most horror scenarios, you can pick fun towards the protagonist, making illogical choices. However, this time, you cannot. Run away? You cannot. You are stuck in your own house. Call the cops? You cannot. You will find no help from them. Fight back? You cannot. You will kill nothing but yourself. Hide? You cannot. You will be found. You cannot. You cannot. You cannot. You cannot. I know right?! I found out about the Mandella catalogue a couple of months ago and I really liked it, so seeing Mark discover it too is really cool!

@@etonsmeeton its basically a set of videos (not in posted order btw) that is on a channel called Mandela Catalogue, if your okay with the images in this video than i suggest watching it! it does have some loud noises so be aware and some imagery that is really unsettling and disturbing to some so just make sure your okay with that.
