Correction: At 4:04 we list BMD-4M from the 7th Guards Air Assault, but it is actually a BMP-3, *possibly* from the 42nd Guards Motor Rifle Division operating in the area although this is unconfirmed. Oryx's lost equipment list: www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html Note this only accounts for losses confirmed via photo or video. The actual losses on both sides are likely much higher because we won't have a picture of every destroyed tank.

I attempted to make a map plotting geo-located, verified through photo/video evidence of Russian equipment losses and Ukrainian infrastructure damages but it quickly got far to much for one student like myself to handle. Honestly I think a community effort project that showcases such losses of civilian lives, structure damages and Russian losses should be made and every attempt made to share it with the Russian public at large to help inform them of what is happening. It would be a very powerful tool, especially listing the units those equipment pieces belong too that someone's father/son, etc could be a part of, to let the Russians know who is actually where. This video was well done and could be used for such a purpose as well. Just stating facts, politics aside.

There are other efforts to collate the data on wrecked tanks and vehicles. The umber is in the hundreds. It would be good to get more people working together on this. Much of the reporting is not well supported with data and some of it many reports may be for propaganda. Identifying the units s also useful. I have seen very little information on Ukrainian losses. Also lots of the vehicles are still relatively intact and not burnt out. So there does not seem to be much actual tank on tank fighting. And how the main Ukrainian units are going. But any way you look at it the Russians are not doing so well. Despite many weeks and possibly months of preparation.

I don't think we will, Russian Air dominance is not complete, as the Ukrainian air force is able to sorte to protect local units and fronts, but the Russians can still deploy massive air assets against targets. Russia wants the tank battle, they want a large conventional victory. Ukraine meanwhile, knows they can't start to coalesce their tank force into a major fighting unit without Russian notice and subsequent heavy bombing by the Russian airforce. Now, lets say the Ukrainians do assemble an armored spearhead, and somehow find enough infantry to support it properly. They can clash with the Russian spearhead, but it means either stretching the already profusely bleeding Ukrainian Airforce to, at best frankly, contest Russian air dominance, or the Ukrainian Armored assault would have to do without air cover, which is a death sentence. Another issue you need to realize is the season. It is spring, the season that halted the German Blitzkrieg with the endless mud. All those videos of stuck Russian Tanks would also be videos of stuck Ukrainian tanks, all major theater moves would be confined to the roads, which again, with the air war, would be a death sentence to Ukrainian armor.

Also, as a defender, the enemy must have at least 3 times your force to dislodge you, so the delay tactic has another benefit. While it's tempting to think about a surprise attack on the convoy and splitting their center force in half, it's too risky for the reasons you outlined. Better to hold the line at major cities with artillery and do combined armed counterattacks designed to blunt offensives and promote stalemate.

Leaving behind tanks, especially newer ones, Pantsirs and other heavy equipment is embarrassing enough. Not fully controlling the air with so much bigger air force than Ukraine is absolutely insane. Having soldiers begging for food, looting.. no words. But the worst is actually that they leave behind the bodies of their own soldiers. There's a reason Americans will risk so much to recover injured and the bodies of their soldiers. Every single American knows that they will at least have the basic human decency to be buried. (edit) The living soldiers' moral is getting even lower by seeing their comrades bodies.

1-2. The Russian and Ukrainian armies used to be literally the same army not that long ago, training on the same machines. Its all soviet tech. So their equipment is almost completely the same and they have almost the same training. So absolutely everything left by Russians can be used after salvaging. After it got real in 2014 Ukrainian army started preparing better and buying modern weapons. 3. There is some newer Russian tech like on 4:13 but mostly its just well known soviet scrap metal. I don't think there's anything worth any detailed analysis.

I’d like to think they destroyed or disabled what they couldn’t take. I’ve seen people say it’s only one or two or that they abandon broken vehicles to continue the advance but you don’t just leave them unguarded! If we stopped for longer than five minutes we’d park off road in cover and get cam nets deployed. Very unprofessional. On day one intelligence reported to the press that they’d deployed minus engineers, vehicle recovery, sappers, 2/3 of their integral artillery, not all their infantry components and very few other combat service support. Why? Because they couldn’t keep them supplied when sat in Russia and Belarus. The reason the south has done best is they’re supplied via a port.

Russian tank losses are much higher if you include the tanks parked by the soldiers on the side of the road because the diesel in the fuel tanks ran out. Because these tanks are integrated daily into the Ukrainian territorial defence after Ukrainian national emblems have been painted on, and the fuel tank has been filled. You also have to keep in mind that the Russians are also leaving behind the ammunition for the tanks. Mobile anti-aircraft missile systems are also represented, which the Russians are abandoning because they don't have diesel in their fuel tanks. These systems are fully loaded with working missiles. This approaches my concern that Putin will let the city of Kyiv be annihilated with a nuclear weapon in order to win this war as soon as possible. As long as NATO continues to deliver modern weapons, this war can drag on for a long time without a Russian victory. Glory and Honour to Ukraine

Yes but a professional force knows when you halt you break track, sat longer than 5 mins get camo nets up. Set sentries. If they truly ran out of fuel then they shouldn’t have. Commanders should have deployed in defence with a reserve of fuel left to fight. The ethos we were trained upon break down was the dismounts can get out and go do their mission but the crew defends to deny the vehicle to the enemy. If needs be destroy or disable but as last resort. You sure don’t leave radios on frequencies, weapons and sensitive tech intact and sure as hell not in fighting condition! These units deserted, if they’d been attacking where are they? Very poor leadership by that battle group commander. If these Ukrainians had any tank training I’d have destroyed all vehicles then burned the last before going back. If not burn them. If you know where fuel cap is pour sand/mud in. And especially considering the Russians are not blowing in place what they leave behind it opens the door for the locals to scavenge parts from like vehicles and get some of the equipment up and running to use against the Russians. At present I see this war going on for 4 more weeks, between equipment gains and munitions donations Ukraine has potential and depends on Ukraine taking on less casualties than the Russians. I'd be tempted to think they expected to be able to retrieve it because they're expecting to take and hold the ground where it's sitting. You destroy your abandoned equipment when you're retreating. This does seem more like people just can't be bothered to even destroy supplies and weapons left behind. Tank ran out of gas, I'm done. Most of the Russian equipment isn't much of a mystery to the West, and certainly not to the Ukrainians. They need it now. That high-tech SAM vehicle they captured looked like they were taking out some of the electronics and then were about to torch it, with the rag hanging out of the gas tank and all the other vehicles being well back being clues. I think our engineers are getting at least the interesting bits of newer stuff.

As said the Russians probably expected they'd be able to recover many of those vehicles. And few if any of them are really that secret anymore. Maybe the electronics from some of the newer AA systems. Not at all. The Russian Army will be exhausted 10-14 days from now -- unable to take Kiyv, short on beans & bullets again, and with its losses almost double what they are at the moment, and morale still in the toilet. Already Putin's negotiators are ratcheting down their demands every few of days, b/c it's been proven that they can't achieve their military objectives at acceptable cost. Another couple of these ratchets and we'll get a UN-moderated ceasefire followed by Russian withdrawals.

The generals are often personally complicit in their units' failures. In Russia, if you are given control of something -- a power plant, a police district, an army division, or a rear-area logistics warehouse, say -- you quickly come to treat it as your own, as a government-provided sinecure; an economic opportunity and supplement to your salary. You "hollow it out" for your own gain and those of your fellow officers -- diverting POL and rations, for ex. -- anything that can be sold or traded to civilians (via middlemen), or slipped out of the country to somebody else's army in exchange for cash or "other considerations" like a Mercedes or a foreign apartment. All the while falsifying the relevant reports and bribing inspectors so that everything continues to APPEAR as it should be. I've heard of painted plastic egg crates being found on the sides of Russian tanks' turrets, in place of the special foam-backed steel plates that are supposed to protect against incoming shaped-charge munitions. This is typically Russian -- looks good, performs poorly, but somebody make (or saved) a ruble. Every soldier in Russia knows this sort of stuff is widespread (just as it was in the late Soviet period).

I've watched hundreds of wrecks, most of them were never engaged with to begin with but simply abandoned by the Russians, sometimes due to poor morale but often due to lack of diesel. The ones I have seen hit seem to have been exclusively with top attack weapons as NLAW and Javelins. Ukrainian tanks have no chance in hell to penetrate the Russian tanks other than perhaps the really old kit we've seen such as T72A, Ukrainians know this and that's why we haven't really seen much tank on tank fighting going on.
