The process of exploring and mapping brand new caves for the first time is so so interesting to me! It must take an incredible amount of skill, patience and determination - I'd barely step foot in a huge open cave with handrails and a guide before panicking, so this is just so so impressive.

Thank you. It's just so fun. It's been a very long time since we've been able to explore this much virgin passage. And we were fortunate that the cave has a lot to see. Sometimes they don't. But there's lots going on in here which we will more fully show in following videos.

*About 20 minutes of caving: then a classic Caveman Hikes rant for your amusement. *This is another installment in our series of videos we've been making at the new cave. Here, Ahrlin, Oscar and Garry were mapping one of the more dangerous portions of the cave. There are actually several new videos featuring these guys which are tremendously terrifying even by my standards. *Lots more on the way for those patient.

Most people are here for caving videos not for my long winded chats. Which is why I put them at the end. So you only have to suffer if you want to. Which apparently, you do. So do i. That's why I read comments

6:05-6:07 was a jump scare for me. Something straight out of those Alien movies. On a serious note, I never watched Friends. Life is too short to be worried about what others think of you. I agree it's good to be kind. Never know when you going to need kindness returned.

Hello Super Caver, Heh, I think this is the same cave your last video was about titled, The Greatest Discovery, but I'm not sure. I went to the beginning of that video to compare the entrances and it looks like the same cave. The Greatest Discovery cave is magical, beautiful, exciting. I watched that video again and will a couple more times, I'm sure. But is this the same cave, in this video? I think so. But it's not clear. It's a part of my agenda to keep track of the Greatest Discovery cave. Frankly, it excites me too even though I'm only a viewer. And one more question if you have time to answer it: I suppose you have no idea at this point how deep the Greatest Discovery cave goes? And a PS: your riffng is fine though I especially enjoyed the walk in the woods to see the gorgeous, west coast, high mountain country, (sasquatch country for sure if you believe that!😊)

Yes, both videos are of the same cave. It has so much to offer, and will take a few videos to fully explore. The snow has already made this area dicey for travel and hiking. We’re quite excited to be first in this monster.

I really enjoy your channels and have learned a lot about caving! It really seems pretty safe compared to scuba diving in caves! Thanks for your comments at the end of this. There are youtube channels my son watches with millions of subs that the guys on there will literally do anything to get views. Maybe it's that upcoming generation but their focus just seems rather sad to me.

In china, Something like 90% of students expect to be internet influencers when they grow up. Theyve most entirely lost a generation. In the united states... its ready over half. So the point is... For all the damage we know, the internet already, one of the unseen issues is young people believe this can be their life. And they will do almost anything to make it that way. Even though it's still a bit like winning lottery. So people's idiocy and intensity to do anything possible to get views, make sense. It's not healthy and I find it just kind of dumb. I just try to keep living life pretty much the same way I always did. But then i'm old and grumpy. I think that's helpful!

@EvenDarker

It's a relatively new flow at about 2,000 years. But this cave was very difficult to locate and quite buried so it is 100% shiny and new to us. Haven't found something of this size in 50 years

Just the entrance would be a no go for me. 😮 I am way too claustrophobic. One thing I find really scary is the idea that you could let the air out of your lungs to get thru a tight squeeze, then get stuck, and not be able to breath again? But the main freak out for me would be the idea that after you go in, someone following you could get stuck blocking your exit. That someone is between you and daylight.
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 8 ай бұрын
The entrance should keep most people out. In fact I couldn't fit in it initially it took me quite a while with equipment before I could get in. And then another week before the next person.

What's your mapping method? Leica disto x + ?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker Ай бұрын
Yeah, actually Garry, our lead mapper is one who invented the Disto method. His Distos are engineered with several extra pieces of technology that... Essentially map itself. You point and shoot, and it is self rendered. When i'm mapping, I use a lidar 3D Modeling device and back it up with a disto. It's locally accurate, but globally needs to be backed up with a line-plot.
@ten-tonnetongue
@ten-tonnetongue 8 ай бұрын
Does the mapper just do its own thing or do you need to put the images together in post?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 8 ай бұрын
Little bit of both. The mapping equipment we use is set up to stitch itself together pretty well. You have one person on the laser and one person on the tablet keeping track of things and writing notes down. There are various ways of mapping. This way of mapping is actually Garry's invention. It's considered the standard of the world for mapping caves. And he made it.

@EvenDarker

In a private Library online. It can be accessed by paying members of the local caving group. This is generally how organized caving works. There are caving groups located all around the world who all have private libraries with all the caving information in the world accounted for. It's a virtual library of everything underground. And I post sime of my personal stuff on Instagram if you're simply asking to take a look. instagram.com/caveman_hikes?igsh=cTR4ZGRnaDV5ejRs

8:31 How easy would it be for a tube like that to collapse? If the entire thing is that thin and is covered entirely in loose dirt, that seems like a really dangerous situation. No?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 8 ай бұрын
In general, caves do not collapse. Especially lava tubes. It's going to depend on their age and the thinness of the ceiling but a deep tube like this is pretty strong. There are areas of weakness but it's easy to spot and stay out of the way. It's not something that we ever consider a danger or think about at all. And that's the danger of caves... the actual dangers are things that you're not thinking about. Like the temperature.
