Is 8GB of VRAM Enough for PC VR?

It's currently October 2023 and both AMD and Nvidia have recently released what are supposed to be mid-tier graphics cards with only 8GB of VRAM on them! Namely the RX 7600 and the RTX 4060ti 8GB. Many games nowadays are beginning to recommend 12 or even 16GB of VRAM which begs the question, what were AMD and Nvidia thinking when designing these cards? They argue 8GB is still plenty of VRAM for most games, especially if you're playing at lower resolutions like 1080p (aka full HD). Well, when playing games in VR we are often playing at resolutions much higher than 1920 x 1080 and even higher than 4K (3840 x 2160) and for those that know anything about how computer graphics work, the higher you set the render resolution of your games the more VRAM is required to store textures, character and other object models as well as other game assets. Since we're playing at much higher resolutions in VR and more VRAM is needed the higher your render resolution is, this of course begs the question, Is 8GB of VRAM enough to play PCVR? Well that's what we aim to find out in this video. To explore this question I ended up testing 4 different GPU's; the Radeon RX 7600 8GB, the Radeon RX 7900XTX 24GB, the GeForce RTX 4060ti 8GB and the GeForce RTX 4060ti 16GB. While comparing the RX 7600 and 7900XTX didn't help me figure out whether or not 8GB of VRAM was liming the performance of the RX 7600, it did help me figure out which games I own will utilize more than 8GB of VRAM. I was then able to play all the same games with the both the RTX 4060ti 8GB and the RTX 4060ti 16GB and I was surprised by what I found out.

Thank you so much for making VR content!! My 5700xt does surprisingly well in assetto corsa (non competitione), but I'd love to be able to turn the settings up a bit. At this point, I think I'll just wait until the next gen of gpu's comes out, its been an absolute workhorse on my 3440x1440 and in vr so far.

try Alien Isolation with TAA mod for better Aliasing. My 5700 runs it in 5K at acceptable frame, awesome and dirt cheap experience. P.S. try to avoid SteamVR, it eats a lot of overhead and makes things stutter without need. OpenXR or even native VR ports show how good that card can do VR.

Hey Maraksot, great video! Really appreciate the effort you put into pcvr benchmarking. I was wondering if you could also do at least a little bit of benchmarking in demanding VR modded games. I am building a high end pc right now just to be able to play Luke Ross VR modded games like cyberpunk, hogwarts, rdr2, far cry 6, etc. at great graphics :) I understand if it's a bit too niche for your channel, but I actually think such benchmarks would pull more views than you'd think. There barely is any benchmarking on this out there. Next to nothing on AMD cards as far as I'm aware. I think these VR mods will also prove that 8GB is not enough... ;)

Just spent an hour or so watching a number of your videos concerning VR/GPU's and finally subscribing. I'm mainly a flight sim guy so your MSFS performance benchmark is most interesting. But could you add DCS to the benchmark rotation? In some ways I believe it is more demanding than MSFS and I know the DCS community would appreciate someone using it as a benchmarking tool.

Amazing content Mark! I love how you put things into VR perspective theres so few creators focusing on this, I’ve got a 3060TI with 13900k but some games are just very limited on performance although they still look great, I’m still getting a 4090 just because I want the best of the best but honestly I have been able to get around 3060 TI with no problems except missing the ultra high quality we all yearn for.

Thank you so much for this! I’m planning a new PC build this month and it’s so hard to find VR performance info. I already knew from general gpu reviewers to avoid 8gb in 2023, and thanks to your vids I know the AMD 7000 series has issues with oculus. Now that you’ve tried the 16gb version, do you think the 4060ti 16gb is a good choice for VR? Since its price has come down a bit I’m seriously considering it, although I’ve seen a lot of people recommend going up to a 4070 instead.

Go 6800xt for VR ,Skyrim VR and Fallout VR or any ported VR games take 12 -14 GB vram , I was able to run them before with 5700xt 8gb but Got really smooth performance with more vram. If you cap them at 60 fps and 100% resolution scale you should be ok with 8 -10 GB . Performance vice neither of the card will hit 100% utilization in most game But you will max out 10 -12 gb vram .

I am using quest 2 and playing assetto corsa ( ~ 20 cars drift servers ) . Used 3070 8gb and had to turn down all in game settings to low, oculus rendering res ~ 1.2x. Now using 3080 10gb, finally i can turn up oculus rendering to max, and in game to ~ medium settings . So in my opinion if you want good video fidelity, you need 10gb 3080 and up.

Hi! Ur stutter is Because your lens resolution is too High in steam Vr for quest 2 it’s overkill u need a higher more powerful Vr headset to run at those kind of video settings - u could have lowered it to 2.5k and it would have been fine - ur jaggered edges would have been more or less the same, I Run a RTX2070 and get no stutter at all! My graphics are amazing With i7 9700k bought in 2019! Just MSFS and F1 2022 can’t run but it’s fine I don’t play them.

I think the 3700X would still work great for PC VR. I know many people in the PCDIY community like to preach about having the fastest CPU you can possibly have but that's really only important if you're looking to get the maximum performance possible from very high end GPU's at low resolutions. The higher you turn up the resolution the more stress that puts on the GPU which in turn lessens the load on the CPU. To get VR to not look like a muddy/pixelated mess you want to run your games at as high resolution as possible, often time above 4K resolution which puts much more load on the GPU, making your CPU less of a factor. So yah, I think the 3700X with your motherboard and RAM with a 4070 or 4080 will be plenty good enough for VR with an Index or Deckard. I think it'll give you a very nice VR experience.

Hey, PCVR is sadly neglected by most PC hardware reviewers, so this is great to see. It's a shame that AMD doesn't prioritise VR more and that headset manufacturers don't prioritise AMD. I have terrible anti-aliasing, and frequent stutter and tearing using a 6600 XT with the Quest 2 and Link cable/Airlink. Then there's the Varjo Aero and DPVR E4 which just say they aren't compatible with AMD. Shame, because I'm not fussed about ray tracing and AMD usually offers better bang for buck. I'm waiting for the Q3 launch to see reviews and get an idea of what I'll need before I jump on board. I'm expecting to get a Q3 though, already upgrading my Wifi to 6E and I imagine I'll need to upgrade to an RTX 4070 as well for PCVR. It'd be great to get some actual data on that though, rather than having to infer it from flat screen benchmarks and resolutions.

I don't have a 4070 video nor do I plan on making one, but I do have a 4060ti and 4070ti video and am working on a 4060ti 16GB video. You would have to make inferences similar to comparing flat game benchmarks but they should help give you an idea of how a 4070 will perform. Looking at flat game benchmarks real quick, on average the 4070 is about 35% faster than a 4060ti, and about 20% slower than the 4070ti. Looking at the performance headroom numbers in my 4070ti video it looks like you'd be able to run most of the games I tested with the 4070 at the settings I used in the 4070ti video. There were some games in that video where I was right on the edge however and even pushed a little further than I probably should have, so you'd need to turn some settings down a little bit with a 4070 in those titles from what I used with the 4070ti, but overall I think a 4070 would offer really nice VR performance.

When playing the adult VR game VAM, I have the MS system monitor on displaying the GPUS vram status. When the 8GB is showing to be full (I peak under the headset to watch the pc screen) I get a lot of lag. VAM actually has an option to clear the vram in game and when I do I get about 1GB free and the lag stops until it is full again. This has always lead me to believe that the vram is the culprit. I believe the games engine is UNITY which is about 80% of the vr market.
