If you look at the national or US geological website there are earthquakes from 1-4 happening all over the world around the clock. The earth's plates under our feet are in a constant moving motion. We have them here in the Bay Area frequently. Some are so small you might not feel them. The building where i work is designed to withstand a 9.5 so crossing my fingers I am at work if the big one hits.
@J_131
@J_131 10 жыл бұрын
It also depends on where the quake originates from. The shorter the distance, the stronger the jolt. You can have a 7.5.... but if it is way out of the bay area...by the time it reaches you, it has lost a ton of energy. So just because it started as a 7.5, doesn't me you out in the bay area got the full 7.5 magnitude. LA's quakes often have epicenters that are directly under densely populated communities.... like this 4.4, for example. It was short, but the intensity was more noticeable because the Fox Studios set was only a few miles from the Epicenter.

Have you lived in Los Angeles long?? I was here for the Northridge earthquake and this one was just a jolt. I went back to sleep. I'm more afraid of those Hurricanes and Tornados. You get a warning and for what? You still can't stop it. All natural disasters are crappy but if I had to choose, I'll stick with the earthquakes.

Speak for yourself buddy. We've had a bit of a quiet decade, but I remember in the 90's quakes like these were frequent and common. I am very much used to them. I lived only a few miles from Northridge in 1994. My house shook so violently.

4.4 Here on chile that is so stupid
@J_131
@J_131 10 жыл бұрын

Your point is good, but according to experts, an earthquake measuring 3 to 5 degrees is considered mild, 5 to 7 is moderate to Strong, with 7-8 VERY STRONG (Haiti, Indonesia, China etc) and if exceed 8 degrees is considered OMG Catastrophic (Chile). So this earthquake (close to epicenter) I consider that it was not strong but maybe they were located in some building and obviously, everyone knows is going to shake more, so it's scary! THANK GOD it wasn't a Strong earthquake otherwise the building would have collapse and because of that I don't considered it was strong. Frighten will always be at the moment because you dont know how long and how strong will be, you got to protect no matter what. The first time I felt the one that really scare me was 5.7 richter and many houses and buildings were damaged, no wounded; a year later was 7.1 sooo, still have memories of that night. I dont wanna feel an 8 richter, but, how do I know it won't happen?

PrettyOne ☺ Well always just in case, i always get to a safe place when the ground starts moving because earthquakes are unpredictable! Sometimes they start kinda slowly but then boom it intensifies a lot! Like back in 2010 i thought it was just some random little tremor, but when it started to get stronger and stronger i realised that it was a big one, when i got outside it was incredible to see the cars jumping off the ground because of how strong the eartquake was!. Because Chile is a seismic country we are always prepared for this stuff, every single building/house that is built since 80's i think ,are prepared for strong earthquakes,for tall buildings is very important for them to shake because that's how they don't break during an earthquake, my house didn't have a single crack on its walls/roof, it holded very good! But i sincerely don't think there could be a strong earthquake in the U.S. because is not a seismic country, the intensity of an earthquake depends on how much energy is acumulated on the tectonic plates! Chile is placed in middle of 2 tectonic plates so is natural to expect a great acumulation of energy and its sudden realease. We're currently waiting for another strong one on the north of Chile, since it hasnt been any strong earthquake in more than 100 years! We've been having lots of tremors right now but nothing too serious, I hope it keeps like that because it means that energy is not being acumulated anymore and its has been releasing it in short and weak tremors. So I recomend you in an earthquake to stay calm, have a clear idea of where the emergency exit are and DON'T RUN that can get you killed seriously. But don't panic, don't expect any strong earthquake in the U.S. :)

Fenistere Inc. Chile has deep subduction earthquakes so a 4.4 would feel like nothing if it's 20-30 miles below the surface, an earthquake within the top 10 miles of the earths crust feels a lot more sharper and produces high ground accelerations, the shaking in this footage is typical of quakes at this depth and magnitude, the magnitude and intensity has no correlation in quakes!!!!
